Abstract

Acanthuridae is a marine fish family with some members are known as ornamental species. Previous studies has been reported the diversity of Acanthuridae. However, there was no study on the phylogenetic relationship of the Acanthuridae from Ujunggenteng and Taman Manalusu southern coast of West Java. The purpose of this study was to provide information about the phylogenetic relationship among ornamental fishes under the Acanthuridae family of Ujunggenteng Beach Sukabumi and Taman Manalusu Beach Garut, West Java. The phylogenetic tree was reconstructed based on morphological characters using maximum parsimony algorithm in software PAUP with 1000 pseudoreplicates and with Halichoeres marginatus selected as an outgroup species. The phylogenetic tree had a consistency index of 0.6429. The value means that the tree was highly reliable due to its low homoplasy. Acanthuridae formed a monophyletic clade compared to the outgroup species by having seven synapomorphic characters. Acanthurid clade was divided into two subclades at generic levels by nine derived characters; three apomorphic characters in Acanthurus and six apomorphic characters in Naso. The tree indicates that Naso brevirostris and Naso lituratus represents basal group, while all species within genus Acanthurus are the most advanced species.  This study is the first to provide the data about the evolutionary relationship of ornamental acanthurid fish from the southern coast of West Java. Data on closely related species is one of the essential scientific basis on making policies regarding the sustainable use of those closely related species.

Abstract

Tapak formation is a formation that is known to experience many changes in the ancient environment. This research was conducted in Tapak Formation, Mount Tugel, Banyumas Regency using bentonik and nannofosil foraminifera. Relative age analysis showed the sample age was around the initial pliocene, i.e. NN14 to no younger than NN15 (4.2 million years ago to lower than 3.5 million years ago). Paleoecological dynamics observed from abundance and diversity of microfossils experienced a decreased tendency from older samples to younger samples. Changes in paleoproductivity were observed based on primary and secondary productivity, where older samples tended to be higher than younger ones. Toc (Total Organic Carbon) content in older samples has a higher value than younger samples. The value of CaCO3 relatively increased in the younger direction, but in the A21N sample the percentage increased dramatically.

Abstract

Marine ornamental trade has been developing for several years with Indonesia as one of the major exporter countries. Among the popular marine ornamental fish in the local and international markets belong to the family of Chaetodontidae. The existence of this family has been reported from several areas in Indonesia. However, no information is available in terms of their phylogenetic relationships of the fish from the south coast of West Java. The aim of this research was to asses the phylogenetic relationships among ornamental fish members of Chaetodontidae in the South Coast of West Java. Fish samples were collected from two trading sites Ujung Genteng and Taman Manalusu. Collected fish were identified using a previously published study. The evolutionary relationships among species were analyzed statistically through phylogenetic analysis based on maximum parsimony algorithm and Kimura 2- Parameter substitution model as implemented in PAUP 4.0 software. Tree branching pattern supported by 1000 bootstraps pseudo-replicates and out-group comparison. Daschyllus trimaculatus used as outgroup species. Based on the study, Chaetodontidae from the South Coast of West Java formed one monophyletic group compared to Dascylus trimaculatus with Chelmon rostratus was the basal species. All the remaining species were the derived species. There are CI and RI value gained. The consistency index (CI) value of this family is 0.5833, and the retention index (RI) is 0.5082.

Abstract

Labridae is a large and diverse fish family. Many species under Labridae inhabits Indonesian coral reefs. However, limited scientific data are available on ornamental fish diversity in Labridae from the South Coast of West Java. The purpose of the research is to give information about species diversity and phylogenetic relationships among species of Labridae fish family in the South Coast of West Java. This research will be conducted using a survey method with a purposive sampling technique. The observed parameters include morphometric and meristic characters and evolutionary relationships among species within  Labridae family species collected from the South Coast of Sukabumi and Garut, West Java. Morphological data will be analyzed descriptively based on morphometric and meristic data. Species-level identification performed by referring to the available identification guide book. Phylogenetic relationships will be analyzed statistically using cladistics method as implemented in PAUP 4.0 applying maximum parsimony algorithm.  The cladogram has a consistency index of 0.563, indicating low homoplasy and proved that the tree was the most parsimonious. Labridae formed monophyletic clade compared to Acanthurus maculiceps, and Cheilio inermis was basal species while the others derived species.

Abstract

Seaweed is a source of foreign exchange and a source of income for coastal communities. Besides being used as food, drink, and medicine, seaweed which is rich in cellulose is very useful to become bioethanol. Bioethanol is used as a raw material for the manufacture of ethanol derivatives. The research objective was to sea the biomass and bioethanol content in Gracilaria canaliculata seaweed from Karang Bolong Beach, Cilacap, and Menganti Beach, Kebumen. Analysis of bioethanol data was carried out using the T-test with the SPSS program to determine whether there were differences in the bioethanol content of Gracilaria canaliculata from Menganti Beach, and Karang Bolong Beach, while the environmental monitoring test with biomass used the PRIMER 7 program for the most influential environmental factors. The results of the study showed there is evidence of environmental factors at Menganti Kebumen Beach and Gracilaria canaliculata biomass, the most influential of which are nitrate. The results of the test to maintain environmental factors of Menganti with Gracilaria canaliculata seaweed biomass using the BIOENV Primer 7 program analysis showed a fixed value on the nitrate display with a value of 0.852 while in the waters of Karang Bolong the value was recorded at 0.79. The T-test results showed no significant difference in the bioethanol content of Gracilaria canaliculata from Menganti Beach, Kebumen, and Karang Bolong Beach, Cilacap. Gracilaria canaliculata from Menganti Beach, Kebumen, produced an average bioethanol content of 7.07%, while those from Karang Bolong Beach Cilacap produced an average bioethanol content of 7.21%.
