Abstract

Abstract. Pomacentridae has a wide distribution in Indonesia waters. Research on species richness of Pomacentridae has been carried out in some areas in Indonesia. However, there are no data about the relationships of Pomacentridae on the southern coast of West Java. This research aims to know the evolutionary kinship of Pomacentridae ornamental fish in Ujung Genteng and Taman Manalusu Beach, West Java. This research used a survey method with a judgment sampling technique. The parameters measured were the consistency index (CI) and character evolution of the resulting phylogenetic tree. Cladogram reconstructed based on maximum parsimony algorithm with 1000 bootstrap replicates in PAUP software. The result showed that the tree had a CI value of 0.6000 which indicated low homoplasy. Pomacentridae formed a monophyletic group when they compared with Chaetodon collare as outgroup. The Pomacentridae clade divided into two subclades. The first subclade consisted of Abudefduf indicus as a basal species, then Neoglypydodon bonang and Plectroglyphidodon lacrymatus have a closed kinship and diverged after Dascyllus trimaculatus, and then Abudefduf notatus and Abudefduf sexfaciatus have a close kinship and diverged after Abudefduf vaigiensis. The second subclade referred to as a basal group, and within this subclade, Chrysiptera brownriggii has a closely related to Chrysiptera unimaculata and diverged after Chromis opercularis. Keywords: Cladistics, damselfish, meristic, morphometric, Pomacentridae

Abstract

Microplastic (MP) pollution is an emerging environmental problem that threatens food security, food safety, and human health since it has been reported to be found in commercial fish consumed by humans. Bitung, North Sulawesi, is one of the biggest contributors to capture fishery production in Indonesia. However, there is no data on microplastic pollution in commercial marine fish from Bitung. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the presence and identify the visual characteristics (color, shape, size) and the polymer type of microplastics found in the gastrointestinal tract of commercial marine fish from Bitung, North Sulawesi. The gastrointestinal tract was extracted using KOH 10%, and the microplastic was observed under a stereo microscope. A total of 753 microplastic particles were found in the gastrointestinal tract of 74 individuals (prevalence 99%), and there was a statistically significant difference in the abundance of microplastics found in the gastrointestinal tract of pelagic and demersal fish. The average number of microplastic particles found in the gastrointestinal tract of pelagic fish (12,24 ± 2,43) is higher than in demersal fish (7,38 ± 3,48). The dominant color and shape of microplastic found in the gastrointestinal tract of the fish were black and fiber, respectively. At the same time, the dominant microplastic size found in the gastrointestinal tract of demersal fish was bigger (1,001-5,000 µm, 39,4%) compared to pelagic fish (150-500 µm, 47%). The Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis result shows that microplastics of the same polymer type can be found in the gastrointestinal tract of both pelagic and demersal fish.

Abstract

Acanthuridae is a marine fish family with some members are known as ornamental species. Previous studies has been reported the diversity of Acanthuridae. However, there was no study on the phylogenetic relationship of the Acanthuridae from Ujunggenteng and Taman Manalusu southern coast of West Java. The purpose of this study was to provide information about the phylogenetic relationship among ornamental fishes under the Acanthuridae family of Ujunggenteng Beach Sukabumi and Taman Manalusu Beach Garut, West Java. The phylogenetic tree was reconstructed based on morphological characters using maximum parsimony algorithm in software PAUP with 1000 pseudoreplicates and with Halichoeres marginatus selected as an outgroup species. The phylogenetic tree had a consistency index of 0.6429. The value means that the tree was highly reliable due to its low homoplasy. Acanthuridae formed a monophyletic clade compared to the outgroup species by having seven synapomorphic characters. Acanthurid clade was divided into two subclades at generic levels by nine derived characters; three apomorphic characters in Acanthurus and six apomorphic characters in Naso. The tree indicates that Naso brevirostris and Naso lituratus represents basal group, while all species within genus Acanthurus are the most advanced species.  This study is the first to provide the data about the evolutionary relationship of ornamental acanthurid fish from the southern coast of West Java. Data on closely related species is one of the essential scientific basis on making policies regarding the sustainable use of those closely related species.

Abstract

Abstract. Research on the sponge barnacle of Indonesia is very rare, and this study is aimed to describe the morphological characteristics of sponge barnacles and their specific relationship with their sponge host species. This research was a survey and sponge samples were collected by tearing apart any available sponge found in three sampling locations, typically coral reef areas of Weh Island, Seribu Islands, and Karimunjawa Islands. Sponge barnacles contained in sponge samples were observed using stereo microscope and scanning electron microscope, and species identification was determined based on the morphological description of Darwin (1854), Pilsbry (1916), Martin dan Davis (2001), and Kolbasov (1993). Four species of sponge barnacles were found consisting of Acasta cyathus, Acasta fenestrata, Euacasta dofleini, and Membranobalanus longirostrum. Specific relationships of barnacle and its sponge host were found between Euacasta dofleini and Haliclona sp. and between Membranobalanus longirostrum and Suberites sp. respectively. Abstract

The rehabilitation of mangroves depends on the availability of high-quality, sufficiently prominent seeds. Currently, a lot of mangrove nursery activities continue to employ traditional techniques, which results in low-quality and slowly growing seedlings. The mangroves of Jakarta were selected because they represent a heavily polluted mangrove ecosystem on Java's northern coast, whereas the mangroves in Kebumen, on Java's southern coast, are in the opposite situation. This study proposed to find an approach to supply Indonesia's mangrove restoration projects with adequate seeds. An experimental approach with a complete randomized design and a factorial pattern was used. The variables tested were planting media and three kinds of mangroves: Rhizophora mucronata, Ceriops tagal, and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. Mangroves from Jakarta are treated with mud, soil media, or a mix of them. A mixture of mud, husk, and husk charcoal is used for six treatments planting media for mangroves from Kebumen. The mangrove seedlings' growth, biomass, and chlorophyll content are the dependent variables. ANOVA was used to evaluate the data with a 95% confidence level, and Duncan's comparison of means test followed. The growth of mangrove seedlings was discovered to be impacted by media type, while the chlorophyll content, dry biomass of roots, stems, and leaves were not affected by this factor. Three species of mangroves differ regarding growth rate, biomass of roots, stems, and leaves, and chlorophyll content. In order to support Indonesia's efforts to rehabilitate mangroves, this research can offer understanding regarding how to select and employ the best media to effectively produce high-quality seeds.
