Abstract

This study examines the construction of identity and solidarity in Arabic-language Instagram content related to Palestine from a sociolinguistic perspective. Social media has become a crucial space for expressing collective identity and mobilizing global solidarity. This research employs a qualitative approach using discourse analysis to investigate linguistic strategies in digital communication. The data consist of 15 selected Arabic captions from the Instagram account عين على فلسطين posted between January and March 2025. The analysis is based on the identity construction framework of Bucholtz and Hall (2005) and Critical Discourse Analysis by Fairclough (2015). The findings reveal that identity and solidarity are constructed through collective pronouns, emotional metaphors, and resistance-oriented expressions. These linguistic strategies not only reflect ideological positions but also strengthen emotional engagement and digital solidarity among audiences.

Abstract

The mengayun ceremony is one of the cultural heritage traditions of the Mandailing community that is still preserved today as a form of prayer, hope, and expression of gratitude for a child within a family. The implementation of this ceremony consists of several interconnected processes, such as the recitation of verses from the Qur’an, the reading of Barzanji, collective prayers, circling the swing, and the swinging of the child accompanied by hadrah. Among these series of rituals, the slaughtering of an animal dedicated in the child’s name is regarded as equivalent to aqiqah, leading the local community to consider the child as having undergone a stage of purification. This study aims to identify the religious symbolic meanings found in the mengayun ceremony in Sitopayan Village, Portibi Subdistrict, North Padang Lawas Regency, using an anthropolinguistic approach. This research employs an ethnographic method that describes cultural practices, social interactions, and ritual symbols within their natural context. The research method used is qualitative, involving direct observation, interviews with traditional leaders and community members, as well as documentation of the ceremonial sequence. Research data were obtained from informants’ utterances and field observations related to the implementation of the ceremony. The findings indicate that each stage of the mengayun ceremony, from the slaughtering of the animal to the child-swinging procession contains expository, operational, and oppositional meanings. The mengayun ceremony not only functions as a medium for praying for the child’s safety but also strengthens social bonds, reinforces communal solidarity, and preserves Islamic values that are intertwined with the cultural traditions of the Mandailing community.

Abstract

Medan stands as one of Indonesia’s most multicultural cities, exhibiting intricate social dynamics shaped by its deep-rooted ethnic diversity. This study aims to examine interethnic social interactions in Medan while identifying the challenges and opportunities for fostering social integration. The primary research questions explore the historical development of ethnicity in Medan, the factors influencing interethnic interactions, and the mechanisms through which challenges such as discrimination and social inequality can be mitigated. Employing a descriptive-analytical approach, this study investigates the historical formation of ethnicity in Medan and the evolving patterns of social interaction by analyzing historical records and social observations. The findings indicate that social interactions in Medan are influenced by colonial legacies, economic disparities, the role of religion, and education in shaping ethnic identity. Key challenges include social segregation, unequal access to resources, and identity politics, all of which impact social cohesion. Nonetheless, despite these challenges, Medan’s ethnic diversity remains a crucial asset for inclusive urban development, provided it is managed through a sustainable multicultural framework. This study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of ethnic dynamics within Indonesia’s urban landscape.

Abstract

This study analyzes Greimas’s actant scheme in the story of Umar bin Khattab in Arabiyah Linnasyiin Volume 4, pages 44–45. The purpose of this study is to describe the actant structure and explain the function of each actant in building the narrative meaning of the story. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with narrative analysis of the Arabic text accompanied by Indonesian translation. The findings show that the story contains three main actant schemes: Umar’s hijrah from Mecca to Medina, Umar’s role as a caliph who monitors the condition of his people, and Umar’s assistance to a poor woman and her children. In these episodes, Umar appears as the main subject driven by courage, responsibility, care, and justice. The actant scheme shows that sender, object, receiver, helper, and opposant play important roles in constructing Umar’s leadership as a model figure. This study confirms that A.J. Greimas’s actant model is effective for reading Islamic narrative texts and also has pedagogical implications for Arabic language learning based on narrative texts.
