Abstract

Misogyny is hatred, contempt, or prejudice against women or girls. It is a form of sexism used to keep women in a lower social status than men, thereby maintaining patriarchal social roles. Hegemonic masculinity is the most exalted configuration of gender practices that legitimizes patriarchy. This article draws on the framework of Raewyn Connell's theory of masculinity and Kate Manne's concept of misogyny to discuss the phenomenon of Indonesian TikTok videos with the hashtag “Pick Me Boy” or #Pick Me Boy. Pick Me Boy challenge traditional masculinity to gain women's attention, and then demean women if rejected. This article uses a qualitative research method to explore how the language expressions and comments in Pick Me Boy videos reflect the phenomenon of mixed masculinity and misogyny by collecting and analyzing videos imitating Pick Me Boy on TikTok. The findings show that Pick Me Boy parody videos on TikTok illustrate male competition for female attention, reinforce stereotypes of masculinity while embodying male misogyny and reinforcing sexist behavior. This study highlights the various ways in which the Pick Me Boy trend perpetuates misogynistic beliefs and practices, revealing the complex interplay between gender dynamics and social media in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

This research investigates how two movies, both entitled Ala Kachuu (2018 and 2002), represent ala kachuu, i.e. a tradition of bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan. Even though the Kyrgyz government has formally banned this practice since 2016, which is considered as a form of forced marriage, it still exists and is practiced by some Kyrgyz. This research used the qualitative method coupled with the mise-en-scène cinematographic technique. By using Stuart Hall’s representation theory (1997) and Mansour Fakih’s gender inequality theory (2008) as analysis tools, this study concludes that both movies represent ala kachuu as a tradition which promotes gender inequality. Moreover, they also represent it as a tradition that leads to various forms of violence against women in Kyrgyzstan.

Abstract

This study discusses the negative response of the people of Russia and Moscow to the song Moskva by Timati, the song with the most dislikes in Russia on the video provider site, Youtube. The writer analyzes the data by using Reception theory by Stuart Hall in analyzing people's response, and propaganda theory by Jowett and O'Donnell in finding the causes of protests over this song. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis, literature study, and interview techniques to obtain the required response data. The results of this study are that the many protests over this song are caused by propaganda elements contained in the song lyrics. The lyrics contains lines and verses, viewed from the lens of propaganda, that are heavily political and leans towards a biased belief of one political spectrum. Other than lyrical aspects, the visualization of the song through its music video also contains propagandistic trait. This is manifested through the abundance of skyscrapers in Moscow shown in the music video which signify the urbanized part of the city, leaving the undesired part enclosed. The combination of the song's internality and responses results in a comprehensive outlook for the song.

Abstract

This study examines how working mothers negotiate her gender role and strategize in facing the condition when domestic and public sphere exist in one space called home after the outbreak COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The research questions are ” how far does working from home give an impact in changing patriarchal gender relation and distribution of work division at home?”, and “to what extends women modify their home functions in coping with COVID 19 pandemic condition and in minimizing patriarchal authority at their own home?” The research uses qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and questioner filling, and focuses on samples of 30 middle class working women, living in Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi) area. This study argues that as the impact of Covid pandemic condition, the middle class working mothers, who have been “forced to go back” to their homes, seemingly, use their homes as “struggling places” to renegotiate the old patriarchal role divisions and unequal gender/power relations. Moreover, it is argued that their homes, to some extends, are used as learning sites for gender equality values, and modified to fulfill their extended functions: as domestic, work, and social spheres.

Abstract

The media in Russia, particularly initiatives such as the Stakhanovite movement, has significantly contributed to promoting women's empowerment in Russia. Despite leaving a lasting influence, these efforts also resulted in unintentional outcomes, including the portrayal of women idealistically through propaganda that can be seen in one of Russian Literatures.  This article delves into the construction of femininity in Natalya Baranskaya's novel Неделя Как и Любой Другой (1969)  within the context of the Soviet state. The qualitative method is used for analysis with the aim to demonstrate that terms addressed to women in the Soviet Union were forms of propaganda rather than empowerment, aimed at shaping female characters according to the state's needs. The paper employs Gender and Nation theory by Nira Yuval-Davis (1997). The study reveals that slogans like “The Real Soviet Women” along with women-targeted questionnaires and state-imposed childbirth quotas, served as instruments employed by the government to manage women's reproductive choices, influence gender norms, and uphold patriarchal ideals. In conclusion, this critique serves as Baranskaya’s opposition against heavily enforced patriarchal systems within the Soviet government.
