Abstract

The problem of this research was that students' motivation in learning English is good, so it is needed to know what teacher's effort in motivating them. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to know what teachers’ efforts in motivating students to learn English at grade VIII of SMPN 1 Tembilahan Hulu are. Therefore, this research was descriptive quantitative research. The researcher distributed the questionnaire to twenty students of the eighth grade of excellent class and interviewed the English teacher as a sample to know what teachers' efforts in motivating Students to learn English. The sample was taken using total sampling because there are only twenty students and one teacher for an excellent class. After collecting the data, the researcher found that teacher has reasonable effort in motivating students to learn English. The efforts are teacher uses various activities in teaching, prepares some engaging media, gives students assignment based on what they have learned, relates topics in teaching to students' daily activities, asks the students to think about their experience, gives reword to students, says positive words, gives students a chance to present their course work, and gives memorable score when students finish group work soon. Therefore, students can be motivated to learn when their teacher keeps supporting them by making some efforts in teaching.

Abstract

As learners of the English language, they were good readers is one of the main aims. To realize this one is not an easy act. There are many influences; one of them is sociolinguistic. This research purposed to describe the influence of sociolinguistic on the learners as the reader. This is a Descriptive Research. The research participants were the Fourth Semester of English Study Program students at the Islamic University of Indragiri Tembilahan. The data was collected from spreading the questionnaire. After analyzing the data, the researcher found a very significant influence than the other very high influence was motivation, which motivation is imperative for the learner as the reader. The mean score of all indicators was 77.93; it was indicated that the influence of sociolinguistics on the learner as the reader was great.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the level of students' self-directed learning in English learning on eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Tembilahan. This research was achieved by conducting a descriptive quantitative study. The total population of this research was 268 students. Sample of this research were 92 students of eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Tembilahan. The researcher used purposive sampling to take the sample. The researcher gave a questionnaire to collect data, consisting of 20 statements based on self-directed learning indicators. It was using the Likert Scale. The results revealed that students' self-directed learning in English learning relies on enough levels with 63,97%. It means that they have a problem being a self-directed learner in English learning. They need to improve themselves to become a self-directed learner. The role of the teacher is vital in order to guide them to be more independent. The teacher can provide the instructions needed to direct students' initiative in their learning process to be more independent.

Abstract

This study analyzed the students’ reading interest in media LINE Webtoon. It purposes to know the students' interest in reading toward media LINE Webtoon and some factors influencing their reading interest. The research design is descriptive research that combined qualitative and quantitative approaches. It was conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Tembilahan. The researchers used the purposive sampling technique in choosing the research samples. They distributed a questionnaire to fifty eleventh-grade students. The questionnaires were distributed to know their reading interest in media LINE Webtoon to answer the first research question. In addition, to answer the second research question, the writer used an open-ended questionnaire to know the factors influencing their interest. After collecting the data, the results were transcribed. The results of this research showed that they had a high interest in reading about media LINE Webtoon. The result of the questionnaire also supported it. The percentage was 77,84%. Furthermore, the students explained that some factors that influenced their reading interest in media LINE Webtoon were: 1) lots of good and exciting stories, 2) the students liked the picture of the story of the LINE Webtoon, 3) add students English vocabulary, 4) more motivate students to learn English, 5) helps students to understand the culture and habits of American people, 6) students can learn some slang, 7) students can learn some synonyms of a word, and 8) suggested by their friend. Based on the research results, the researchers concluded that the media LINE Webtoon has a substantial positive impact on the students.

Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems found during the teaching and learning process in class VIII of SMP Kasih Lestari Tembilahan, specifically about students' understanding of the functional text. The problem found is that 50% of the students cannot understand the text they are reading, they cannot reach the KKM score, and Functional text is one of the texts in which students must be able to read and comprehend. This research is included in quantitative descriptive research. The population of this research is class VIII SMP Kasih Lestari Academic Year 2020/2021. The population and sample of this study were 23 people who were taken using the total sampling technique. The instrument used was an objective test. Data from students' objective tests are analyzed based on indicators and then interpreted and become research findings. Based on the results of the study showed that students of class VIII SMP Kasih Lestari: 1. The ability of reading comprehension in Main Idea Aspect showed at the poor level of 10 people out of 23 students (30,4%). 2. The reading comprehension ability in Reference Aspect showed at enough level of 10 people out of 23 students (43,4%). 3. The reading comprehension ability in Inference Aspect showed at the excellent level of 15 people out of 23 students (65,2%). 4. The ability of reading comprehension in Unfamiliar Word Aspect showed at the poor level of 15 people out of 23 students (34,7%). 5. The ability of reading comprehension in Factual Information Aspect showed at enough level of 5 people out of 23 students (43,4%). From the above research results, it can be concluded that students still experience many difficulties in reading comprehension, especially in functional texts by applicable rules. Furthermore, based on the results of this study, teachers are expected to be able to provide better teaching techniques, and students can do more exercises to improve students' reading comprehension abilities.

Abstract

The problem in this study was the students’ common difficulties in TOEFL Reading Comprehension. This study only used one variable. The research method used in this study was a descriptive research. The purpose of this study was to know the students’ common difficulties in TOEFL Reading Comprehension on the second semester of English Study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri Tembilahan. The total of the sample used in this study were 23 students, the technique was used to take the sample is total sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher used a test. After the data has been collected, the result of test showed that the skills that are considered to be the most difficult ones in TOEFL reading, which is skill 3. This skill is identifying stated detail questions correctly. It is the highest percentage (84%) with the total of incorrect answer is 210 from 5 items. Then, it is followed by skill 5 (82%) with the total of incorrect answer is 82 from 2 items, which is finding pronoun reference. It is the second most difficult skill for the students. The third most difficult skill is skill 7. It is responding of transition question achieve 81% with the total of incorrect answers is 81 from 2 items. Next, skill 10 is considered to be the fourth most difficult skill in TOEFL reading comprehension. The questions are about the use of context to give meaning of difficult word which is counted 80 % from the total of incorrect answers is 120 from 3 items. Then, the fifth most difficult skill in TOEFL reading comprehension is skill 1, which is consisting the questions about answering main idea questions correctly, students made 78% of the total incorrect answers is 156 from 4 items.

Abstract

Speaking is a skill to produce sequences of words that exist at the meaning while reading means a skill to get meaning from the written words. Vocabulary is the key in which these two skills relate to each other. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between speaking skill and reading comprehension of the third semester English students at Islamic University of Indargiri. The sample of this study was 20 students. The research method used in this study was a correlational study. Researchers gave the test of speaking skills and reading comprehension to collect data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the average of the students’ speaking skills was categorized as Good because 70,8 in range 66-79 and the students’ reading comprehension was categorized as Good to Excellentbecause 78,7 in range 76-100. Based on those findings, researchers analyzed the students’ speaking skill and their reading comprehension by using Pearson r formula, with the result is 0,691. Based on the coefficient correlation, 0,691 was interpreted as Moderate Correlation. It means there is a significant correlation between students’ speaking skill and their reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the students’ perception on online learning class during covid 19 pandemic. Sample of this study were 16 students of the third semesterand the fifth semester of English Study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri. The research method used in this study was a descriptiveresearch. Researchers gave questionnaire and interview about student’s perception on online learning class during covid 19 pandemicto collect the data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the data from questionnaire shown that the percentage is 52,97 %, it can be written that the students’ perception on learning online class during covid 19 pandemic wasNeutral, because 52,97% was in range 60%-79,99%. This finding means that the students do not refuse learning online classduring covid 19 pandemic but also do not accept as whole since some obstacles they faced during online class. The poor connection and less of interaction made most of the learners did not have deep understanding of the material as in offline class.

Abstract

This research aimed to know students’ beliefs toward the importance of English Learning for Agribusiness students at Islamic University of Indragiri. The research design was qualitative approach. There were 15 students of Agribusiness major took part as participants in this study. To collect the data, 17 open-ended questionnaire was distriuted to them using 5 themes: language learning aptitude, difficulty of learning language, nature of language learning, learning and communication strategies, and motivation and expectations. The answers of the questionnaire were analyzed in four steps, namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and verification. The result of this study shows that the students of agribusiness major believe that learning English is very important for them.

Abstract

Nowadays English is a compulsary subject must be taught for students, because English is global language. English has some skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. One of the important skills is reading, because through reading students will have broad insight, so the habit of reading has to start with students in Elementary. Elementary students are English young learners that should be facilitated well in their learning reading by using good strategy. Teaching English for young learner is different with teaching English for adult learner. Young learners have different characteristics and learning preference. In teaching reading, English teachers should implement appropriate strategies and interesting to young learners which can be a stimulus to become active students and participate in teaching and learning process. Therefore, this article aimed to explain some reading strategies that can be applied by the teachers for young learners. The method employed is library research which has four steps to collecting the data namely note-taking, outlining, describing, and draw conclusion. The strategies that are described are Emergent Literacy, Mnemonic Strategy, Read aloud strategy, Decoding Strategy, and Language Experience Approach.
