Abstract

Speaking is a skill to produce sequences of words that exist at the meaning while reading means a skill to get meaning from the written words. Vocabulary is the key in which these two skills relate to each other. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between speaking skill and reading comprehension of the third semester English students at Islamic University of Indargiri. The sample of this study was 20 students. The research method used in this study was a correlational study. Researchers gave the test of speaking skills and reading comprehension to collect data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the average of the students’ speaking skills was categorized as Good because 70,8 in range 66-79 and the students’ reading comprehension was categorized as Good to Excellentbecause 78,7 in range 76-100. Based on those findings, researchers analyzed the students’ speaking skill and their reading comprehension by using Pearson r formula, with the result is 0,691. Based on the coefficient correlation, 0,691 was interpreted as Moderate Correlation. It means there is a significant correlation between students’ speaking skill and their reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the students’ perception on online learning class during covid 19 pandemic. Sample of this study were 16 students of the third semesterand the fifth semester of English Study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri. The research method used in this study was a descriptiveresearch. Researchers gave questionnaire and interview about student’s perception on online learning class during covid 19 pandemicto collect the data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the data from questionnaire shown that the percentage is 52,97 %, it can be written that the students’ perception on learning online class during covid 19 pandemic wasNeutral, because 52,97% was in range 60%-79,99%. This finding means that the students do not refuse learning online classduring covid 19 pandemic but also do not accept as whole since some obstacles they faced during online class. The poor connection and less of interaction made most of the learners did not have deep understanding of the material as in offline class.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore English students’ self-regulated learning and its factors. A quantitative survey method using total sampling techniques was administered toward 118 eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Tembilahan Hulu-Riau. The data were collected directly using a Likert scale questionnaire derived from a careful examination of the works of literature. The data then analyzed using a descriptive mean formula and further interpreted qualitatively to answer the formulated questions. The results showed that students’ self-regulated learning in the English classroom is at the “enough” level. This result was influenced by four factors, namely: The support of environment, technology, confidence, and a desire to learn independently.

Abstract

This research aimed to know students’ beliefs toward the importance of English Learning for Agribusiness students at Islamic University of Indragiri. The research design was qualitative approach. There were 15 students of Agribusiness major took part as participants in this study. To collect the data, 17 open-ended questionnaire was distriuted to them using 5 themes: language learning aptitude, difficulty of learning language, nature of language learning, learning and communication strategies, and motivation and expectations. The answers of the questionnaire were analyzed in four steps, namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and verification. The result of this study shows that the students of agribusiness major believe that learning English is very important for them.

Abstract

Nowadays English is a compulsary subject must be taught for students, because English is global language. English has some skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. One of the important skills is reading, because through reading students will have broad insight, so the habit of reading has to start with students in Elementary. Elementary students are English young learners that should be facilitated well in their learning reading by using good strategy. Teaching English for young learner is different with teaching English for adult learner. Young learners have different characteristics and learning preference. In teaching reading, English teachers should implement appropriate strategies and interesting to young learners which can be a stimulus to become active students and participate in teaching and learning process. Therefore, this article aimed to explain some reading strategies that can be applied by the teachers for young learners. The method employed is library research which has four steps to collecting the data namely note-taking, outlining, describing, and draw conclusion. The strategies that are described are Emergent Literacy, Mnemonic Strategy, Read aloud strategy, Decoding Strategy, and Language Experience Approach.

Abstract

The research aimed to find out the questioning strategy used by the teacher in teaching speaking in the classroom interaction at SMA Muhammadiyah Tembilahan and to examine the function of the questions applied by the teacher. The research design in this study was descriptive-qualitative. The sample for this research was the English teacher. The research used total sampling by using one teacher as a participant. To get the data, the researcher used a questionnaire and an interview. According to the data analysis, the teacher employed several strategies, including wait time, repetition, paraphrasing, simplification, and probing strategy. The questionnaire and interview demonstrated that the teacher had a good interaction with the students using questioning strategies, and both the teacher and the student agreed that questioning strategies could help students understand the material.

Abstract

Pentingnya mempelajari Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa international di era ini semakin disadari oleh para orangtua. Selain di sekolah, mereka mengantar anak-anaknya untuk belajar bahasa inggris di tempat-tempat kursus. Namun sayangnya tidak semua anak memperoleh kesempatan baik tersebut. Karena, yang pertama, tidak semua sekolah dasar menyediakan pelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan, yang kedua, tidak semua orangtua mampu mengantarkan anak-anaknya ke tempat kursus. Berangkat dari dua alasan inilah tim PKM mengadakan kegiatan pengajaran kepada anak-anak usia sekolah dasar yang tinggal di sekitar lingkungan pemakaman umum Tanjung Harapan, Tembilahan. Mereka adalah 14 siswa sekolah dasar yang sama sekali belum pernah mempelajari Bahasa Inggris baik di sekolah maupun di luar sekolah. Mereka mengikuti kegiatan ini selama enam pertemuan dengan tema fruits, animals, dan parts of my body. Media visual berupa flashcard dan games diimplementasikan untuk menciptakan suasana belajar yang menyenangkan dan bermakna. Menyenangkan karena mereka belajar sambil bermain dan bermakna karena menambah pengetahuan berupa kosakata Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of students now to use dictionary which the result from preliminary observations are most students use online dictionary than book dictionary when studying the English language. The researcher become curious about the students experiences in using online dictionary. Thus, this study aims to investigate about students perception on the use of online dictionary by using quantitative method. The sample in this study were 35 students of class XI MIPA 5 SMAN 1 Tembilahan Hulu. Sampling was carried out using cluster sampling technique. In collecting data, researchers used a questionnaire as a research tool. This questionnaire is used to find out how students perception of the Use of Online English Dictionary. The questionnaire used in the study was presented in 5 (five) alternatives, commonly known as the Likert Scale. The results showed that students' perception of the Use of Online English Dictionary fall into the high category. It proved that 35 students got that category as the highest average score was in indicator selection with a score 140, followed by indicator organization with a score 139. And then the average value of indicator interpretation with a score 148. So, the researcher can conclude that the use of online dictionary can increase students’ interest in learning English. Because online dictionary is faster and easier than book dictionary.

Abstract

Reading is one of the four language skills that should be mastered by language learners. Through reading, they enable us to gain the information needed. Moreover, the purpose of this study is to investigate how the students' ability in using pictures on reading descriptive texts. The research design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. The population in this research was 10th grade of MA Sabilal Muhtadin Tembilahan, the population was group or cluster as classes. The sampling technique was a purposive sample. The students’ mean score was 63, it can be seen 6 students in interval 81-100 with category is very good, or with presentation (15%), 16 students in interval 61-80 with category is good, or with presentation (41%), 13 students in interval 41-60 with category is enough, or with presentation (33%), and 4 students in interval 21-40 with category is poor, or with presentation (10%)and 0 students in interval 00-40 with category is Very poor, or with presentation (0%). In conclusion, the overall students' ability in using the picture was good.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is the process of making meaning from the texts. In this study, the students’ problems related to the students’ difficulties in gaining information from the reading texts. CIRC (Cooperative Integrated Reading Composition) method was selected to solve those problems. Thus the main purpose of this current investigation is to test whether or not CIRC brings positive effects toward the students reading comprehension of descriptive texts. This is an experimental study, which was conducted at grade ninth students of SMP Negeri 1 Gaung. The samples consisted of 48 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used a test that is formed in the multiple-choice test. After conducting the research, it found the tobserved was 7.14, which was higher than the ttable score in the degree of significance 1 % and 5% (2.687<7.12>2.410). It means that the alternative hypothesis (H1) of the research is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. In other words, the use of CIRC method toward students reading comprehension of descriptive text at grade ninth of SMP Negeri 1 Gaung is effective.
