Abstract

This study contains analysis of translation method in the short story “A Blunder” by Anton Chekhov which is translated into Indonesian by students as the participants of this research. In translation analysis processes, the researcher used theory of translation method based on Newmark Theory. While to find out the equivalence in the translation, the researcher used Baker Theory. The researcher thought that there are a lot of variations methods appear in the results of translation, so he wants to know the kinds of equivalence translation used by the participants to make the target language (TL) more comprehensible. Qualitative descriptive method that includes observation and document analysis was used in this research. Here, the result of document analysis were consulted to the translation and literature expertise to check the result of the analysis. As the conclusion, the researcher finds 6 methods used by the participants to render the short story “A Blunder” into the target language (TL). Besides, the researcher finds two kinds of translation equivalence in the translations.Keywords: translation, translation method, translation equivalence, short story

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether to what extent pictures can improve students’ speaking competence.  It was carried out at SMAN in Cigugur for three months. The subject of the research was the students of SMAN in Cigugur in the academic year 2012/2013. The research method was classroom research and it was conducted in two cycles. The data was collected through interview, observation, diaries, document and test. The qualitative data were analyzed by using constant comparative method. While the quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistic to calculate the mean scores of pre-test, test, and post-test. The research findings show pictures can improve the students’ speaking competence by indicating  their speaking fluency, appropriate vocabularies, grammatical sentences, and good pronunciation. The advantages of pictures were also shown by the classroom situation, i.e.: during the speaking class the students can answer teacher’s questions; the students had courage to express their idea freely; the speaking activities was not limited in the written way; and their attention in speaking class.Keywords: Speaking, pictures, students’ competence

Abstract

This research aims to analyze motivational strategies in teaching English as foreign language at 7th grade of Junior High School 7 Kuningan and to analyze students‟ attitudes towards motivational strategies that were applied by teachers in teaching EFL. The researchers used qualitative research by using classroom observation, interview, and questionnaires. The result taken from classroom observation and interview show teacher 1 and teacher 3 applied motivational strategies completely based on the phases of motivational strategies. Thus, the students responded these strategies positively. On the other hand, teacher 2 applied motivational strategies incompletely because the teacher missed the first phases. This was responded negatively by students. Therefore, the students were actively involved in teaching and learning process conducted by teacher 1 and teacher 2, but the students were passively involved in teaching and learning process conducted by teacher 2. Furthermore, the result taken from questionnaires shows that students gave positive attitudes towards the teacher 1 (88.25%), teacher 2 (79.02%), and teacher 3 (85.71%). Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the way the teachers applied motivational strategies in teaching EFL determined students‟ attitudes towards motivational strategies applied by teachers in teaching EFL.Keywords: motivational strategies, phases of motivational strategies, students attitudes, teaching EFL

Abstract

Program pengabdian berupa pendampingan bagi siswa Sekolah Dasar dan Sekolah Menengah Pertama dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris dilakukan bertujuan untuk membantu para siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris dari rumah selama pandemic Covid-19. Pendampingan ini dilakukan dengan latarbelakang kesulitan-kesulitan para siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris dan kesulitan orang tua dalam membimbing belajar Bahasa Inggris. Olah karena itu, program pengabdian ini disambut baik diantara orang tua yang tinggal di Perum Griya Nyansa Lestari. Terdapat 6 siswa yang tergabung dalam program pengabdian ini, jumlah siswa dalam program ini dibatasi dikarenakan protocol covid-19. Para siswa terlihat antusias dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris dalam program ini. Hal tersebut bisa dilihat dari kehadiran mereka selama pembelajaran. Program ini akan berlanjut selama para siswa dalam masa belajar di rumah.

Abstract

This research focuses on the translation of slang words and the strategies used by the translators of Internet version (IT) and DVD  version (DT) in Deadpool 2 movie.  The purpose of this research is comparing the translation of slang words and the useof translationstrategies by the two translators. The research employs a qualitative method with a case study as the design of the research. In collecting data NTC’s Dictionary of American Slang by Spears is used in clasifying slang words in the dialogue of Deadpool 2 movie. In analyzing and comparing the strategies, Baker’s (1992) theory is applied. The result of this research shows that; there are 65 slang words found in the movie. IT translated 47 slang words, and DT rendered 39 slang words. The interesting finding is that 38slang words are translated differently. Other 27 is the same. Seen from its translation strategy, five strategies are used by IT. Those are translation by a more general word, translation by omission, paraphrase using related word, paraphrase using unrelated word, andtranslation using a loan word. Meanwhile, DT employed six strategies, i.e.translation by a more general word, translation by omission, paraphrase using related word, paraphrase using unrelated word, translation using a loan word, and translation by less expressive word.

Abstract

This reserach focus on apprasisal system analysis on an article entitled”Claudia si cantik pemimpin kartel narkoba mirip Kim Kadarshian”. In this reserach the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method, the data is taken form the news portal liputan6.com that’s afiliated in Surya Citra Televisi (SCTV). That text is analyzed by using appraisal system that focuse on attitude (affect, judgement, and appreciation) amplifying  attitude and source of attitude (graduation). The result of this reserach shows that there are many positive apresiataion on Claudia eventhough Claudia is a drug lord.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the equivalence of directive speech act and its translation techniques in The Lion King movie. The study used the script of The Lion King movie, and its two kinds of subtitles, namely the professional translator version and the fansub version. A qualitative case study is used as research design while documentation is considered as the tool. The results found 6 types of directive speech acts among 143 directive speech acts. All of directive speech act in the movie “The Lion King” are translated equally by professional and fansub translators. There are also 272 translation grouping techniques in this study: 1) 115 (42,3%) total of single group techniques in both professional and fansub translation. 2) 114 (41,9%) total of duplet group technique in both professional and fansub translation. 3) 31 (11,4%) total of triplet group techniques in both professional and fansub translation. 4) 12 (4,4%) total of quadruplet group techniques in both professional and fansub translation. Literal translation is the most found type of translation technique, intended to translate simple texts and dialogues. Abstract

Data terakhir di tahun 2022 menunjukan minat dan kemampuan baca dari anak-anak di Indonesia memperlihatkan hasil yang kurang menggembirakan. Hal tersebut menimbulkan keprihatinan kami sebagai akademisi yang berkecimpung dalam pendidikan. Maka dengan fakta tersebut kami mengajukan program pengabdian Masyarakat berupa program meningkatkan minat dan kemampuan baca daari anak-anak di Desa Bunder, Kecamatan Cidahu, Kabupaten Kuningan. Kegiatan pengabdian ini berjalan selama tiga hari. Langkah yang kami lakukan mulai dari sosialisai, kemudian pelaksanan program pengabdian ini, berdasarkan proses pengabdian yang kami lakukan selama tiga hari menunjukan bahwa terdapat peningkatan dari minat baca dan kemampuan baca para siswa, hal tersebut bisa dilihat dari antusiasme yang terlihatbdari keterlibatan para siswa dalam program kami, dan juga berdasarkan masukan dari Kepala Sekolah, guru kelas, dan orang tua anak-anak yang terlibat dalam program ini.

Abstract

Kompetensi menulis dan mempublikasikan artikel pada jurnal bereputasi merupakan kebutuhan esensial bagi akademisi. Namun, banyak dosen dan mahasiswa masih mengalami kendala mendasar, mulai dari penyusunan naskah, pemilihan jurnal, hingga merespons umpan balik reviewer. Sebagai solusi, tim pengabdian masyarakat Universitas Muria Kudus menyelenggarakan workshop penulisan artikel ilmiah dengan menghadirkan narasumber yang merupakan praktisi langsung di bidang editorial jurnal. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan pada 8 Oktober 2024 di Ruang Seminar Rektorat UM Kudus. Metode pelaksanaan berupa ceramah interaktif, studi kasus, dan sesi tanya jawab. Peserta yang terdiri dari dosen dan mahasiswa pascasarjana menunjukkan antusiasme tinggi selama pelaksanaan. Evaluasi melalui kuesioner menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman peserta sebesar 85% dalam hal teknik penulisan, strategi pemilihan jurnal, dan cara merespons reviewer. Disimpulkan bahwa workshop dari perspektif editor ini efektif dalam membekali peserta dengan pengetahuan dan strategi praktis untuk publikasi ilmiah. Kegiatan lanjutan dalam bentuk clinics penulisan sangat direkomendasikan untuk pendampingan yang lebih intensif.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menemukan bagaimana mahasiswa menggunakan metode penerjemahan Setia ( Faithful) dalam menerjemahkan karya sastra berupa cerita pendek berjudul “Blunder” karya Anton Chekov dari bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Di dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif dalam mengumpulkan data dan menganalisis data yang didapat dari hasil terjemahan Inggris-Indonesia dari mahasiswa tingkat tiga. Penulis menggunakan teori-teori penerjemahan dari Newmark dalam menganalisa metode apa yang digunakan oleh para mahasiswa dan Baker untuk menganalisis kesetaraan dalam penerjemahan. Berdasarkan hasil analisa dari hasil penterjemahan yang di lakukan oleh mahasiswa bisa di ambil sebuah kesimpulan bahwa hampir semua mahasiswa menggunakan metode Faithful dalam menenerjemahkan cerita pendek tersebut. Metode penerjemahan Faithful sering digunakan oleh mahasiswa, karena mahasiswa mencoba menerjemahkan secara persis makna kontekstual dari bahasa sumber. Selain itu ditemukan kesetaraan dalam penerjemahan yang dilakukan oleh para mahasiswa yaitu persamaan gramatikal.
