Abstract

This research discussed  the positive and negative politeness strategies in The Last Song novel by Nicholas Sparks (2009). The data were the utterances in The Last Song novel. This research was mainly aimed to find out the strategies of positive and negative politeness. The theory applied in this research was taken from the book entitled “Politeness Some Universals in Language Usage” proposed by Penelope Brown and Stephen C Levinson (1987). This research was the descriptive qualitative research. Method of collecting the data used observational method by using non-participatory technique. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the pragmatic identity method. The research result showed that the characters in The Last Song novel applied all the strategies of positive politeness and negative politeness except the eighth strategy of negative politeness; state the face threatening act because The Last Song novel was the romantic novel and there was no regulation, obligation, social rule from the country.

Abstract

Communication is one of important part in human life. This research related to the phenomenon of pragmatics. This research focused on analyzing the flouting of maxims in the Disney film entitled “Beauty and the Beast”. The purpose of this study is to determine the kinds of maxim flouting produced by the actor. For this research, the researchers used Grice's theory of flouting maxim. This research used descriptive qualitative as the research design which shapes how the report of the analysis would be descriptively. This research collected the data by applying observational and non-participatory technique by Sudaryanto (1993). As for analyzing data, the researchers used pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence- in equalizing technique. From the analysis of the collected data, the researchers found that several conversations of the main characters in this film contained flouting of the maxims. Those were 4 data of maxim quantity, 4 data of maxim quality, 3 data of maxim of relevance, and 2 data of maxims manner.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to identify and analyze the types of presupposition implied in the BBC news of corona virus in Indonesia. In this research, the researchers used descriptive qualitative research as the research design. The research design was conducted to design is a qualitative approach in which express the outcome in words and provide an explanation of the result. In collecting the data, the researchers used the observational method and non-participatory technique by Sudaryanto (1993). In analyzing data, the researchers applied pragmatic identity method and distributional method. As for the theory, the researchers used the presupposition theory proposed by Yule (1996). The types are existential, factive, non- factive, lexical, structural and the counter factual presupposition. The research was existing in the  BBC news “Indonesia corona virus”. The research found the types of presupposition are existential, factive, non- factive, lexical, structural and the counter factual presupposition. The most type of presupposition which could be found is existential presupposition.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research explored one of speech acts phenomena. The researchers took directive acts types as the object of this research. Utterances of directive acts that the host produced were used as the data source. The directive acts types were analyzed by employing Searle and Vanderveken (1985)’s theory regarding types of directive acts. Observational method was adopted to analyze data and it also used non-participatory technique collection. The data were analyzed through pragmatic identity method and competence in equalizing technique by Sudaryanto (2015). It discovered that there had 18 utterances of directive acts in James Corden’s utterances. There were eight of command, six of request, prohibition and question had two data. The type of permission was not uttered by the host and guests. The dominant type was command because the host was the host, which means he owned higher degree compared to the guests.

Abstract

The purpose of this descriptive qualitative research was to reveal request types in movie characters’ utterances. 2021 American teen rom-com movie entitled “To All the Boys: Always and Forever” was used as the data source. All data of this research were obtained from the movie characters' request utterances. Observational method and note-taking technique were used to do the data collection. Data were analyzed by using a pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence-in equalizing technique. In revealing the types, theory of request types discovered by Tsui (1989) was applied. For the research result, five request types were found and those types appeared in 62 data. Specifically, request for action had 23 data, offer and invitation showed eight data for each type, propose was found to have 12 data, and request for permission got 11 data. The result also revealed that request for action was the most commonly conveyed type. This is considering the characters conveyed lots of request utterances to influence the hearers to get requested actions done for the speakers’ benefits.

Abstract

Language analysis involves examining various aspects of a language, such as its structure, meaning, and usage, to understand how it works and how people use it to communicate. The purpose of this research aimed to ascertain the acts and forms of directive acts on “Steve TV Show” YouTube Channel. The data were analyzed by using Searle (1979) directive acts theory and forms of directive acts Theorized by Kreidler (1998). This descriptive qualitative research used an observational and non- participatory technique. The researcher gathered data by viewing the episodes and that the researcher did not participate in the show. This research employed the pragmatic identity method and the pragmatic competence-in-equalizing technique to analyze the data. This research discovered three forms of directive acts: declarative, imperative, and interrogative. The acts are request, ask, tell, command, order, and suggest. The form of interrogative mostly found because the Talk Show telling about Interview a guest.
