Abstract

This study aims to analyze narrative development in early childhood using Applebee’s narrative development model. The main focus of this research is on a 3-year-and-9-month-old child’s ability to construct narrative structures through spontaneous storytelling that emerges during play. Data were collected through naturalistic observation and audio recording during free play, daily conversations, and storytelling activities. The resulting narratives were transcribed and analyzed using Applebee’s developmental stages: heap, sequence, primitive narrative, and true narrative. The findings indicate that the child’s narrative development varies, ranging from heap and sequence to primitive narrative, with some stories approaching a true narrative structure. This analysis also highlights the importance of symbolic play media and social interaction in supporting children’s narrative development. This research is expected to contribute to the development of language and literacy learning for young children through storytelling approaches

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes the shifts of text worlds in the novel Saman through Cognitive Poetics, particularly Text World Theory and the activation of mental schemata. With its multigenre character, ranging from poetic, documentary, erotic, and religious modes to light conversation and tragedy, Saman presents stylistic transitions that continually reshape the reader’s spatial, temporal, evaluative, and emotional orientations. The research employs a qualitative approach with units of analysis in the form of narrative fragments that mark genre transitions. The analysis involves close reading, text-world mapping, schema tracking, and the assessment of inter-genre coherence. The findings reveal three major cognitive strategies: the shift from phatic to evidential schemata in personal tragedy, the transition from embodied cognition to moral reasoning in erotic–religious passages, and the emergence of structured empathy in the move from poetic to documentary modes. This study fills a gap in previous research, which has rarely discussed the cognitive experience of Saman’s readers, while also highlighting the novel’s uniqueness as a multigenre text that demands high cognitive flexibility from its audience.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the representation of Tzvetan Todorov’s structuralism in the short story Memanggil Roh Singa (“Summoning the Lion’s Spirit”), which contains elements of magical realism. Todorov’s structuralist approach is employed to examine the relationship among the intrinsic elements, particularly the narrative facts, theme, and literary devices. The short story is analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method through close reading of the text and identification of its narrative structure based on Todorov’s framework, as well as an analysis of the characteristics of magical realism using Wendy B. Faris’s theory to validate its magical aspects. The results indicate that Memanggil Roh Singa represents Todorov’s distinctive structural pattern, consisting of 21 narrative sequences dominated by flashbacks. The setting portrays magical elements with a ritual theme of “kammala”, narrated from a first-person point of view. The narration is dominated by metaphorical and personifying language, enriched with mystical symbols. This research demonstrates that Todorov’s structuralism is effective in uncovering the layers of meaning within a short story characterized by magical realism, as it reveals the coherence between the narrative structure and its embedded mystical dimensions.
