Abstract

This research aimed to develop an interactive e-book integrating traditional games, such as Cublak-Cublak Suwung and Truth or Dare cards, with structured scaffolding to support English language learning. The researchers implemented scaffolding through step-by-step exercises that progressively guided students in understanding texts. While many studies have explored digital media in language learning, research on interactive e-books incorporating traditional games and scaffolding remains limited. Addressing this gap, this study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Using a mixed-methods design, quantitative data from 15 seventh-grade students was collected through Likert-scale questionnaires, and qualitative data was collected from interviews with an English teacher, observations, and student questionnaires. The e-book was validated by two experts in design and content, with validation scores of 4.33 from the media expert and 4.23 from the content expert, while students rated it 4.22, confirming its high validity. Additionally, student feedback indicated a strong interest in using the e-book for English learning, with an average score of 4.35. This innovative approach supports more engaging, culturally relevant English learning, making it a valuable resource for classrooms and supplementary learning, particularly among Indonesian learners.

Abstract

The present research aimed to investigate the causes of students' anxiousness, the methods used by teachers to control their students' anxiety while they were learning English, and the success of the methods used at MA Raden Fatah Prambanan, Sleman. The study used a case study methodology paired with a qualitative approach. Questionnaires, classroom observations, and in-depth interviews with an English teacher were used to collect data. Most of MA Raden Fatah Prambanan, Sleman's students have basic English skills. They lack motivation and think that learning English is difficult. 85,7% of students in grade 11 experienced anxiety during English language learning, and 14,3% did not feel anxiety. To reduce student anxiety, the teacher used various teaching strategies. These strategies included implementing different learning methods, such as group discussions, reading aloud, presentations, and ice-breaking activities; using a feedback model for students; and providing motivation and encouragement to boost students' confidence. These approaches helped make a more comfortable and encouraging educational situation. Strategies that were applied consistently and appropriately helped create a more conducive learning environment and supported the development of students’ language skills. The research was expected to provide insights for teachers in managing student anxiety and serve as a reference for developing more effective teaching strategies.

Abstract

Today's education aims to equip students with the 21st-century skills necessary for success in a world shaped by globalization and technological advancement. These skills include creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and complex problem-solving. In the context of teaching English to young learners, particularly in Islamic elementary schools, integrating a game-based approach into the classroom proves to be an effective strategy. This approach fosters an engaging and dynamic learning environment that can incorporate all the necessary skills within the language learning process. However, traditional game-based methods often rely on physical or paper-based games that lack interactivity, scalability, and integration with digital literacy, which is a key aspect of 21st-century learning. These methods also tend to be teacher-centered, limited in content variety, and less motivating for digital-native students. This study aims to develop a 5C skills-based English learning game application using the Research and Development (R&D) method. To achieve this, the study employed the ADDIE model, including needs assessment, to analyze elementary school students' needs, wants, and challenges in learning English. This analysis forms the basis for developing the application, as well as its design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. The results of thematic and descriptive statistical analyses revealed the importance of digital game media in actively engaging students and motivating them in their learning. The experiment demonstrated a significant difference in outcomes between students taught through traditional methods and those using digital games. This study suggests the necessity of incorporating digital games in English language learning as a valuable tool that every teacher should consider.

Abstract

A movie consists of a dialogue between its characters. Both the speaker and the listener use many different kinds of utterances. In communication, we use utterances in action, also known as speech actions. This research aimed to determine the types of speech acts performed by the characters and determine the function of the speech acts performed by the characters in Turning Red's movie. A movie can deliver a message to the audience as one form of communication. It contains a variety of genres, making it an interesting topic to be a research. In this case, understanding speech act theory becomes essential for solving the issue. Speech acts are things that can be accomplished through speech. There are three types of speech acts: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. The movie has been chosen since it is a children's genre movie representative of Asian parenting style and leaves the deepest messages to children. The data were taken directly from the movie dialogue, focusing on the speech acts uttered by the characters and the context of the occurrence of the utterance. In collecting the data, the researchers transcribed the data comprehensively, which were analyzed using content analysis on the movie Turning Red. The researchers analyzed some illocutionary acts in the movie conversation. The data was divided into five types: directive, representative, declarative, commissive, and expressive. Teachers can create relevant and engaging learning experiences that build pragmatic competence and improve students' communicative skills by adding actual speech acts from movies into language lessons. It helps to understand how movies can be used as valuable instruments in English language teaching, especially in the development of language acquisition.

Abstract

Both Indonesia and Estonia have similar contexts of learning English as a foreign language.  The learning achievements reveal a considerable disparity when considering the worldwide assessment of English proficiency, with Indonesia ranking 79th and Estonia securing the 23rd position according to the (EF English Proficiency Index in 2023). This study compares English curricula in Indonesia and Estonia, examining the differences between them despite similar conditions for teaching English as a foreign language. The fundamental goal of the study was to identify the factors that influence diverse learning outcomes in various countries. The study used content analysis to compare curricular papers from both countries on six critical criteria including: (1) stakeholders involved in English curriculum development, (2) stakeholders' reactions to the English curriculum, (3) stated purposes of the curriculum, (4) educational philosophies underlying the English curricula, (5) unstated purposes of the curricula, and (6) influential factors shaping the curricula. The analysis suggested that the key drivers to the discrepancy in learning results in both countries were national policy, pedagogy, and assessment implementations. The results showed that the main result of the mentioned alterations underscored the need for an enhanced approach to the instruction and acquisition of English. Allocating sufficient time for English learning allows students to maximize their opportunities for developing language skills. Moreover, integrating speaking and writing elements into final evaluations and embracing a communicative language strategy can inspire both educators and learners to participate in more genuine learning experiences.

Hybrid communication offered contributions toward English language teaching and learning at primary education including students' enhancement and engagement on English skills, technical skills, class management, and digital literacy as well. Also, it facilitated students to access and obtain many online resources and references such as PDF texts, websites, e-books, YouTube videos, and animations.
