Abstract

Rivers play a crucial role as aquatic ecosystems within the hydrological cycle, serving as vital areas for environmental water absorption. Their conditions are intricately shaped by both human activities and the inherent characteristics of their surrounding environments. Among these rivers, the Bone River stands as a pivotal hub of community life in Gorontalo, yet it faces significant vulnerability to pollution. This research endeavors to assess the water quality of the Bone River utilizing Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) as bioindicators. Conducted between March and April 2021, the study spanned eight carefully selected observation stations, covering the river's course from upstream to downstream. The evaluation of water quality is undertaken through a quantitative analysis of biotile diversity parameters, encompassing calculations of EPT diversity, percentage abundance, and the overall diversity of macrozoobenthos families. From the research findings, it was revealed that the Bone River hosts 16 EPT families, comprising a total of 1438 individual observations. Across the eight stations, the diversity of the EPT family encompassed 16 taxa, inclusive of 7 Ephemeroptera and 9 Trichoptera taxa, with Plecoptera notably absent. Notably, the results of the Biotilik examination yielded a score of 2.28 for the water quality of the Bone River. This score indicates a pollution burden on the river, as evidenced by elevated Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations at select observation sites, surpassing established quality standards. Furthermore, the absence of macrozoobenthos, particularly Plecoptera, which are known for their sensitivity to pollution, further underscores the compromised state of the river's water quality.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the structure of the bivalve community on the coast of Langkat Village, Pinolosian, South Bolaang Mongondow District. Sampling was carried out from December 2020 to January 2021 at three stations, namely seagrass beds (station I), tourist attractions (Station II), and mangroves (Station III), using the quadrant transect method, where each observation station made a line transect from the mainland towards the sea. Line transects are placed at each station, while the distance between line transects is 50 m. Observation results show that the bivalves at the research location consist of five families (Arcidae, Asteridae, Cyprinidae, Cardiidae, Ostreidae) an six types of bivalves, where the diversity index is low and the uniformity index is moderate, indicating that the distribution of each type is relatively even. Keywords: Bivalve; coastal; community structure; Lungkap

Abstract

The Bone River faces potential pollution due to human activities in the surrounding area. To ensure this, macrozoobenthic is used as a bioindicator, utilizing the characteristics of its constituent communities, which show sedentary behaviour, limited mobility, and sensitivity to water conditions. This research aims to examine the composition of the macrozoobenthic community which reflects the water quality of the Bone River. The research was conducted from May to August 2023 at three observation stations. Water quality evaluation used the Hilsenhoff Family Biotic Index (FBI) methodology. The findings revealed a collection of 1,040 individuals representing 43 macrozoobenthic genera, with Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Diptera widely distributed along the river. A dominance index of 0.2 indicates that there is not a single macrozoobenthic species that dominates, while an FBI value ranging from 3.71 to 5.47 indicates that there is pollution in the Bone River. Keywords: Bioindicator; Family Biotic Index; Macrozoobenthic; River; Water quality

Abstract

Scientific information on Goby fish species in Gorontalo waters is still not widely available. Nike is a local term used by Gorontalo local people for larvae and juvenile schools of gobies. This fish has important economic value for the Gorontalo area and has been designated a provincial communal Intellectual Property Right. Limited information regarding the existence and importance of this fish in Gorontalo waters is a challenge for sustainable management of nike fish resources. One aspect that needs to be reported in this regard is the morphometrics and meristics of the adult Nike Stadia. This research aimed to provide data on morphometric and meristic differences in Gobi fishes in the Bone River. This research was carried out in November 2021, while sample identification was conducted at the Fisheries Hydrobiotechnology and Biometrics Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Gorontalo State University. The Image-J application carried out Sample morphometric measurements, while the meristic data was observed directly. The results showed that the morphometrics and meristics of the gobi species (Sicyopterus longifilis, Belobranchus belobranchus, and Bunaka gyrinoides) from Bone River differed.

Abstract

Activities around Bone River, one of the largest rivers in Gorontalo Province, include agriculture, settlement, gold mining, sand excavation, industry, and illegal logging. This research aimed to report the water quality status of Bone River using the STORET method as an index commonly used for measuring pollution levels in a water body, which the Indonesian government regulates, as stated in the Decree of the Minister of Environment, No. 115, 2003. This work involved data from 2021-2023 along the upstream to downstream of the river. There were 12 water quality parameters measured: temperature, TSS, DO, pH, COD, BOD, nitrate, phosphate, ammonia, and the heavy metals (Pb, Cd, and Hg) concentration. This study revealed that parameters met water quality standards for class I and class II: temperature, pH, DO, Pb, and Cd. The index scores ranged from -96 to 0. The upstream area was categorized as good, and the midstream to downstream was recognized as heavily polluted. This pollution level is dominated by organic waste from agricultural and domestic household activities. The concentration value consistently exceeds the quality standard in all data from St 5 to St 12. These two parameters are enough to significantly cause worsening water quality based on the STORET with a total score contribution of -40. BOD and COD parameters contribute the most to the river pollution level. Keywords:Water qualityPollutionSTORETBone River

Abstract

Intertidal gastropod communities on hard-substrate habitats may reflect ecological responses to microhabitat heterogeneity through community structure and spatial distribution patterns. This study aimed to interpret the ecological responses of intertidal gastropod communities in Tomini Bay waters, Pohuwato Regency, through an analysis of community structure and distribution patterns across five stations (KP1–KP5) selected based on the presence of hard substrates, namely dead coral and rocky habitats (including natural rocks and breakwaters). Distribution patterns were analyzed using Morisita’s Index and confirmed by a chi-square (χ²) test. Overall, 74 species from 21 families were identified, with a total of 17,827 individuals. Rocky habitats had higher individual abundance, whereas cumulative species richness was higher in dead-coral habitats. The community showed strong dominance by Planaxis sulcatus, which was associated with low diversity at certain stations, with the highest H′ value recorded at KP4 (2.628) and the lowest at KP5 (0.153), while the highest D value (0.954) was recorded at KP5. Dispersion analysis showed that clumped patterns predominated in both habitats, and the proportion of records with significantly clumped patterns was higher in rocky habitats than in dead-coral habitats. These results indicate that spatial distribution patterns are an important component in the ecological interpretation of intertidal gastropod communities on hard substrates. Abstract

The concentration of three heavy metals Pb, Cd and Hg ware measured in Bone River, Gorontalo sediment. The heavy metal pollution on sediment in Bone River have not been explored longitudinally. The samples were taken in July 2021 at 8 stations. The trend of metals ware observed in sediment as PbCdHg. The level of studied metals Cd and Hg did not exceed the safe limit by ANZECC, OSQG LEL and CCME TEL meanwhile Pb was met the limit by by ANZECC. However, the investigated showed that fluctuations due to differences in the characteristics of each location. Contamination factor (CF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) demonstrated that the sediment samples were low contamination and lightly polluted. Contamination by heavy metals in the Bone River implies that the conditions are much frightening for the biota and residents around the river.
