Abstract

Language learning strategy is one of the influential aspects for students’ success in learning a language. Basically, language learning strategies are closely related to students taking language-related department. However, students from non-English Department also have the indication of using the strategies since English is one of the subjects taught in the curriculum. Thus this study aims to (1) identify what strategies are used by non-English Department students in Listening class and (2) describes to how the use of strategies influence students listening achievement. This study is a qualitative descriptive study with second-semester students from Governmental Science Department as the research subject. A questionnaire, observation, and documentation are used to collect the data. After analyzing the data, it was found that some strategies are used by non-English department students in their Listening subject, namely memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies. Moreover, the students use those strategies in moderate level. Thus, a comparison between the level of strategies use and students’ listening scores is made to describe to what extends the use of strategies influence students’ achievements.

Abstract

Debate is a competence that must be owned by students because in addition to including a prestigious event, debate as a place for students to think critically (critical thinking) and convey the thought well and systematically. The willingness and ability of good students in debating should be a good quality asset of the young generation. However, their great motivation is hampered if there is no container that they can make a place to develop the skills they already have. FriDatE's community service activities, "Friendly Debate Match and Seminars of Amongst All Varsity Debates of Madiun District" were conducted to introduce students to the debating community at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo and the establishment of a university student debate community for the residency of Madiun. In addition, the program also brings in debates experts who can be used as a guide and guide in the debate. The existence of tutors is very helpful for students to evaluate and provide new knowledge about English debate in the next regular meetings.

Abstract

This present article aimed to elaborate the challenging problems that have been encountered by multicultural classroom teacherand how to deal with it. Heterogeneity in classroom is a common issue in language learning, especially with the involvement of multiculturalism. In this globalization era, the emergence of educational exchange causes students from a country takes their higher education in another country having better quality and reputation. Those students are commonly addressed as international students. The enrollment of such students is perceived advantageous for the university since it improves the international recognition. However, it also requires some efforts concerning the multicultural issue such as language, so that the students may successfully accomplish their study in a country which the native language is different from their native. With regard to this condition, the use of international language as a means of communication is unavoidable. However, in some circumstances, the use of native language in which the students take their study is more required, depending on the educational policy in appointed university. There are several students from Thailand taking their study in a private university in Ponorogo. Concerning the language, most of them are not mastering both English and Indonesia. As a result, teaching those students might be challenging due to misunderstanding communication that may occur in the classroom, especially for students who do not enroll in English Department. It presents the author’s experiences in teaching English for specific purposes in Communication Science Department of this university.

Abstract

Many strategies have always been used to improve students’ speaking ability, especially how to speak in front of public. To speak in public, people need to have good abilities both in verbal and non-verbal. An intensive course program of public speaking held by English Language Centre (ELC) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo (UMPo) has been used as the program preference to enhance students’ competence in public speaking for last two years. This study aims to investigate the program of that teaching; public speaking intensive course helps students raise their speaking competency and reduce their anxiety. At the beginning of the semester, pre-test of public speaking is given to the students to know their ability before joining the program. At the end of the semester, the students are given post test and questionnaire. The questionnaire is also given to 6 instructors who involving in teaching public speaking program. The result of the students’ scores after following this program indicates that this program is successful to enhance their public speaking. The questionnaire given to the students also reveals that they can build their confidence or reduce their anxiety in speaking. This evidence is also supported by the results of questionnaire given to the instructors for asking their perception after completing this program. The result of perception entails that this program is appropriate for all students, particularly those who have passion in public speaking and want to get more benefits from it.

Abstract

MUHAMMADIYAH-CONTEXT ENGLISH LITERACY TEXT DEVELOPMENT FOR COMMUNITY SERVICES. This community service was conducted based on early-observation in SMA Muhammadiyah Ponorogo. This high school has implemented billingual curriculum for a year. However, students text literacy towards English texts were limited. Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo has focused to develop community services in all field studies particularly those school under Muhammadiyah-management. In this community service report, the authors would like to report Muhammadiyah-based literacy text development for SMA Muhammadiyah Ponorogo’s case. Authors are expertise in education field especially in language test assessment and text literacy. The community service was conducted in even semester of year 2020. Although the situation did not allow authors to conduct training face-to-face due to coronavirus pandemic, the community service was still held through webinars. It aimed to train students improving their English-text literacy certainly in the context of Muhammadiyah. Three day webinars were conducted for community services consisted of introduction of bilingual curriculum and its relation to Muhammadiyah-based texts, and strategies to improve students’ literacy.

Abstract

Wilayah Desa Janten Karangan Area memiliki asset yang ada berupa, singkong, pohon kelor, ternak sapi dan kambing. Program pada pengabdian masyarakat, dengan mengembangkan aset masyarakat Jaten. Masyarakat hanya memanfaatkan untuk pakan ternak dan sayur bening saja, dengan memanfaatkan kelor menjadi produk inovasi makanan / minuman kesehatan diharapkan produktivitas harga jual meningkat. Begitu juga dengan singkong yang hanya dibuat pakan ternak dan digoreng saja, dengan inovasi singkong menjadi gegerco (getuk gorong cokelat). Daun kering hanya menjadi sampah, dengan pemanfaatan sampah kering yang dicampur kotoran hewan dapat menjadi pupuk kompos yang bernilai jual tinggi.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develop an EFL course book for the first semester learners at the Islamic junior high school in Indonesia. The material development includes some procedures of need analysis, material development, expert validation, material revision, try-out and final revision. Based on the results of questionnaires distributed to 106-second graders, the interviews done to the teachers and field notes taken from a document of the syllabus, this research revealed that most of the students and English teachers require English instructional materials embracing religious and general knowledge. After validated by the experts and tried-out to the students, this research finally produced English materials that were supplemented by a teacher‟s guide, student‟s worksheets and a CD containing listening materials.

Abstract

Although entrepreneurship training is commonly conducted for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), entrepreneurship training that integrates digital marketing and technical proficiency with a narrative inquiry approach is rarely implemented in Islamic boarding school or pesantren. This narrative inquiry research for community service program aimed to develop and implement an integrated training program that includes excellent service training, local coffee processing, and digital marketing at entrepreneurship-based Islamic boarding schools. Thirteen participants from a pesantren and a entrepreneurship-partner participated in this study. Data were collected from observation and unstructured interviews spanning five months. Drawing on community engagement theory, the findings identified three micro themes: active participation and community involvement; multidisciplinary collaboration and synergy; and empowerment and self-transformation. The contribution of this present study is to provide empirical and practical evidence regarding how community engagement perspective can describe to what extent digital marketing and technical proficiency help micro, small, and medium enterprises in pesantren.
