Abstract

This study investigates characteristics of EFL students's academic writing, particularly students research proposals. This study aims to uncover how novice researchers introduce their research topics within the larger research area. In particular, this study focuses on how students establish their research territory in the introductory parts of their proposals. This study focuses on students knowledge and preparation for conducting scientific research and the structural characteristics of students's research proposals. The study is based in Swales(1990) CARS Model for research article organization. This descriptive qualitative study involves 136 student proposals collected from 6th semester bachelor students majoring in English who enrolled in Research of Language classes in four academic years 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018. Analysis of students topics indicates that most students are not yet well-prepared for conducting research. Analysis of the structural characteristics of the proposal also shows that students lacked substantial knowledge on research area or disciplines as well as scientific writing, particularly research writing, that detriment their success for entering the research community. Serious pedagogical and training efforts need to be done to improve students ability and preparation for research.

Abstract

This article reports a study on conversational aspects of adaptation from novel to movie. Specifically it reports the exchange structure changes when dialogues in novel is adapted into movie, the issue of fidelity that is involved in the changes, and how the changes affect information or message of the original exchange. This study adopts Stam’s (2000) theory on adaptation and MacCarthy’s (1991) theory on exchange structure of conversation to analyze R.J. Palacio’s novel Wonder (2012) and its film adaptation with the same title Wonder (2017). This descriptive qualitative study involves 9 data selected from the conversations of the main character,  Auggie,  in the novel and their corresponding dialogues in the film. The finding shows that the changes of structure elements is influenced by the changes of settings and participants, as well as the need of focus and emphasis of given issues in the conversation.

Abstract

Editing of Eka Sabara’s manuscript entitled Para Ulama dan Tokoh Loloan Abad ke-19 Masehi: Syarif Tue dan Encik Ya’kub (or in brief, Para Ulama dan Tokoh Loloan) is the second work of the efforts to document cultural legacy of the Loloan islamic community, of Jembrana, west Bali. This second manuscript focuses on the Loloan moslem figures of the 19th century, the time of which was thought to be the second landmark of the spread of Islamic faith and community in the area. In contrast to the first manuscript editing of the same author, i.e. of Eka Sabara’s Daeng Nachoda (2018), the editing of Para Ulama dan Tokoh Loloan manuscript involves significant addition of information to the original manuscript. The problems raised in the editing process comprises: (1) what are the characteristics of Eka Sabara’s manuscript entitled Para Ulama dan Tokoh Loloan?, and (2) what are editing strategies necessary to produce a coherent and cohesive text? The editing is based on Blanchard dan Root’s (1997) guides on editing academic texts, and content analysis method and editing techniques are conducted on the first draft (the manuscript) to suit the theme and purpose of the manuscript. The editing result shows that the manuscript needs to undergo major addition of chapters to meet the theme and to include other religious figures who also took part in the spread of Islamic faith and development of Loloan moslem community in Jembrana. Other editing techniques include addition, omission, rearrangement of information, all of which are used to produce a coherent, theme-suppporting text. The result of the editing process is a ready manuscript to be registered in the national library catalogue (with ISBN number) and then to be published as the document of a legacy of values and wisdom held and lived by the historical islamic figures in the Loloan community in Jembrana.

Abstract

This article discusses the effect of structural change in translation of English text into Indonesian. Data are selected from some bilingual (English-Indonesian) literary works. The result of the study shows that structural changes in the translation affect the accuracy of meaning transfer. On the other hand, structural change may be done for ease of reading, while the complete meaning is expected to be derived from the context or co-text of the structural items. The finding gives some insights of the dynamics of translation, and particularly of the effect of strategy choice on the meaning transfer.

Abstract

Dengan dikembangkannya Desa Plunturan, Ponorogo, menjadi Desa Wisata karena potensi kesenian khas Reog Ponorogo yang dimilikinya, pelatihan Bahasa Inggris bagi Kelompok Sadar Wisata menjadi hal yang penting untuk dilaksanakan. Pelatihan ini akan sangat menunjang pengembangan Desa Wisata mengingat pada masa selanjutnya diharapkan wisatawan asing akan hadir pada acara Festival Seni atau mempelajari seni yang dimiliki Desa Plunturan. Metode pelatihan Bahasa Inggris ini menggunakan Pendekatan Komunikatif (Communicative Approach) yang memberikan porsi lebih besar untuk berlatih menggunakan Bahasa Inggris untuk berkomunikasi. Materi yang diberikan disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan dalam berkomunikasi dengan wisatawan asing tentang desa dan seni, dan pelatihan dilaksanakan di berbagai tempat yang berbeda untuk menghindari kendala rasa bosan. Dalam rentang waktu 8 minggu, hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan terlaksana dengan baik berkait dengan adanya kerjasama dan antusiasme peserta, dan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kompetensi Bahasa Inggris para peserta. Namun demikian, pelatihan tetap perlu dilanjutkan untuk terus meningkatkan kompetensi bahasa Inggris Kelompok Sadar Wisata Desa Plunturan, Ponorogo.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mendokumentasikan cerita rakyat yang ada di Dusun Suru, Desa Plunturan, Kecamatan Pulung, Ponorogo. Metode penggalian data yang digunakan adalah metode etnografi Spadley. Metode lapangan ini digunakan untuk menarik kesimpulan budaya dari ketiga sumber, yaitu apa yang dikatakan orang, dari cara orang bertindak, dan dari berbagai artefak yang digunakan orang. Informan yang dipilih adalah para pinisepuh dan sekaligus pelaku budaya yang benar-benar kompeten, yaaitu Mbah Bikan (pinisepuh yang menjadi lurah selama 36 tahun dan sebagai maestro reog Onggopati), Mbah Ghani serta Mbah Kamituo Dusun Suru. Hasil penelusuran ditemukan empat cerita rakyat, yaitu “Asal-usul Dusun Suru”, “Asal-Usul Sawah Sepilang”, “Reyog Ki Onggopati”, dan “Krenjang Motoero”.

Abstract

The incoherence of sentences in scientific manner occurs due to habits that are repeated from generation to generation. The confusion of thinking results in inaccurate arrangement of sentence structures and this inaccuracy creates illogical meaning of sentences. The objectivity of a sentence will be hurt if the writer presents factual information, but does not have urgency and relevance. Parties in Indonesia who are often victims of language objectivity are subalternan groups, in this case women, families of political prisoners, and racial minorities.

Abstract

Pragmatics is a subfield of linguistics that studies communication. Politeness is a key concept in linguistics and social interactions, referring to the strategies and behaviors people use to show respect, consideration, and deference to others. As suggested by Brown and Levinson (1987), the strategy of politeness has been observed to operate as a regressive measure towards face-threatening actions (FTA). This research aims to analyze the types of politeness strategies and find out the mostly used type of politeness strategies in The School for Good and Evil movie. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used Brown and Levinson (1987) theory of politeness strategies. The form of data are utterances of the characters, indicating politeness strategies. The result of this research is 79 data utterances types of politeness strategies which is divided into: bald-on record strategy (25) times, positive politeness strategy (27) times, negative politeness strategy (15) times, and off-record strategy (12) times. Politeness strategies are the mostly used in this movie is positive politeness strategies, because the speaker and the hearer have a close relationship.

Abstract

In communication, the speaker not only makes utterances but also conducts actions through those words. In addition to conveying information, individuals use language to perform actions that are intended to have a specific purpose and effect on the recipient. Actions carried out through spoken words are referred to as speech acts. The purpose of this research is to identify and describe the types and most dominant types of illocutionary acts that were presented in Thor: Love and Thunder movie through the movie and script. The researcher used the qualitative method to analyze the data. This research uses John Searle’s theory in Yule's books (1996) about various types of illocutionary acts including representative, directive, declarative, expressive, and commissive. The result of this study found a total of 97 data on illocutionary acts in Thor: Love and Thunder movie. First, the researcher found representative types (21 data) data, directive types (35 data), declarative types (5 data), expressive types (15 data), and commissive types (13 data). The most dominant type used in Thor: Love and Thunder is the directive type because Thor uses his words to command and lead his army.

Abstract

Lexical cohesion refers to the way in which words in a text relate to each other through their meanings. This topic is important due to the fact that words in texts have relations among them based on the keywords. The relation could be in synonymy, antonymy, and hyponymy, which sometimes some readers lack of this matter. The subject of this study is the literary work of the novel Circe by Madeline Miller. The focus of this study is how lexical cohesion supports themes of rebellion in this novel and demonstrates how vocabulary forms a network. This study answers the gap in existing research, which mostly explores lexical cohesion in educational contexts and journal articles, but not in literary works with certain themes such as rebellion. This study aims to identify and analyze the lexical cohesions used to convey the theme of rebellion in the novel Circe and, with existing data, investigate how lexical cohesion forms vocabulary networks. This study used Halliday and Matthiessen's (2014) theory of lexical cohesion. This analysis reveals how lexical choices increase narrative coherence and thematic depth. The methodology used is qualitative research. The source of this study is Madeline Miller's Circe. The findings show that lexical cohesion in Circe is 50 data achieved through various devices such as synonymy (five nouns, four verbs, four adjectives), antonymy (seven nouns, five verbs, four adjectives), and hyponymy (nine nouns, twelve verbs, zero adjectives). This lexical cohesion demonstrates how vocabulary forms a network that enhances understanding and vocabulary by forming a network of related words such as synonyms, antonyms, and hyponyms that help readers or listeners connect ideas, identify relationships between terms, and interpret texts more coherently, ultimately enriching comprehension and enabling the acquisition of diverse and nuanced word meanings.
