Abstract

Paluh Sibaji Village, Pantai Labu District, in a coastal area located in Deli Serdang district, has only 0.5% reduction in stunting from 2022 to 2023. The prevalence of stunting in Deli Serdang District was 13.9 in 2023 has increased by 1.4 percent from 2021. Pantai Labu sub-district is located in a coastal area with 60 cases of stunting, 10 of which were found in Paluh Sibaji village. Proper sanitation is an indirect factor causing stunting, including meeting the four aspects (quality, quantity, continuity and affordability) in drinking water. This research aimed to analyze the Four aspect of drinking water sources with stunting incidents. This type of research was analytical with a cross sectional study design. The population was 375 houses of mothers with toddlers and 141 houses sample spread across 4 hamlets. The sampling technique used was cluster sampling and data analysis used Chi square statistical test by using SPSS version 25. Data were collected using a questionnaire designed in the ceting card tool which was applied via Android. The results of the research found that 16.3% of children under five were stunted and based on the type of clean water source, namely dug wells 22 people (15.6%), drilled wells 33 people (23.4%), and municipal waterworks 86 people (61.0%), only 3.5% of houses met the four aspects. The statistical test results showed that the variables of fulfilment of the four aspects of drinking water, and drinking water treatment were not related with the incidence of stunting (Pv>0.05). Other basic sanitation factors besides clean water and drinking water sources can become environmental management priorities in an effort to provide proper sanitation in Paluh Sibaji village to reduce stunting. Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are one of the main priorities in the world of health. As the world population soars, deaths from NCDs will increase every year. Globally, there are 41 million cases or the equivalent of 74% of deaths caused by NCDs every year. This research is a type of quantitative research with a cross-sectional type of research conducted on a group of fisherman in Paluh Sibaji Village. This research was carried out on September 21 2023. The population in this research was all fisherman in Paluh Sibaji Village, totaling 200 hundred fisherman. The sampling method used in this research was convenience sampling with a total of 60 fisherman respondents. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence fisherman's blood pressure on the incidence of hypertension (HTN). This research uses multiple linear regression analysis and application analysis using the Statistical Program for Social Sciences tools. The significance value of the consumption pattern, knowledge and attitude variables is below p<0.05, so it can be concluded that consumption pattern, knowledge and attitude influence the incidence of HTN among fisherman in Paluh Sibaji village. This study revealed that the majority of respondents, especially those belonging to the risk group, had experienced HTN. Age at risk was found to have a 2.26% higher likelihood of developing HTN. A large number of respondents showed poor consumption patterns, good knowledge, negative attitudes, and poor behavior regarding HTN prevention. These findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions and awareness campaigns to address these factors and reduce the risk of HTN in the studied population. It is recommended that further research discuss more broadly the factors that can influence the increase in blood pressure in fisherman and conduct a detailed food recall to assess the impact of consumption on HTN. Abstract

The second sustainable development goal, which aims to achieve food security and eradicate hunger and all kinds of malnutrition by 2030, includes stunting as one of its priorities. WASH and personal hygiene are indirect risk factors for stunting, if environmental sanitation and personal hygiene are poor, it can increase the risk of stunting in toddlers. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of personal hygiene status and basic sanitation on the incidence of stunting in Pantai Labu sub-district. The research was conducted from August to October 2023 in five villages that have been determined to be the locus of stunting in the district, namely Paluh Sibaji, Regemuk, Denai Kuala, Bagan Serdang, and Sei Tuan Villages. This research method uses a case control design population in this study were mothers of toddlers who were stunted in Pantai Labu District, totaling 55 toddlers. Sample taken by total sampling with a total of 55 stunted toddlers and 55 toddlers who were not stunted and a total sample of 110 toddlers. This research uses primary and secondary data, with data collection using questionnaires and observation sheets. Data analysis using logistic regression test presenting with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) by using SPSS version 25. The results showed that personal hygiene of toddlers (OR = 4.259; 95% CI 1.749-10.372; p = 0.001), personal hygiene of mothers (OR = 4.571; 95% CI 1.752-11.928; p=0.002), and ownership of latrines (OR=2.260; 95% CI 1.051-4.859; p=0.037) influenced the incidence of stunting in Pantai Labu sub-district. Access to drinking water, waste water disposal facilities, and waste disposal facilities had no effect on the incidence of stunting (p>0.05). Mothers are advised to improve personal hygiene for both mothers and toddlers and always fulfill the criteria for latrines to meet the requirements. Keywords: Stunting, Personal hygiene, Sanitation

Abstract

Indonesia ranks 80th in the world’s happiness index, lagging behind neighboring countries such as Singapore (30th), Malaysia (59th), and Thailand (58th). The happiness index consists of three dimensions: life satisfaction (education, work, and home facilities), feelings (happiness, anxiety, and depression), and meaningfulness of life (independence, environmental mastery, and self-acceptance). In 2021, North Maluku was the happiest province while North Sumatra had the lowest happiness index, nationally ranking seventh lowest and being one of the provinces with poor incomes, education, and housing facilities experienced by fishermen in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the Life Satisfaction Level among fishermen. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study with 107 samples taken based on the Slovin formula from the population of 700 people. The data was obtained by using a questionnaire that had been tested for the validity and reliability. A univariate data analysis was performed by using SPSS version 25. The results showed that 47.66% respondents were >45 years old, 43.93% completed junior high school, 7.67% had 5-10 years of work experience, and 57.94% smoked. While 52.34% perceived their quality of life as not good, 85.98% felt not secure about old age, 77.57% felt their jobs did not meet financial needs, 82.24% reported their finance was not good enough, 60.75% felt their health quality was not good, and 74.77% found their living conditions were inadequate. Moreover, 64.49% considered that their sleep quality was not good, 77.57% had bad social relationships, and 64.49% struggled to manage negative emotions. Only 47.67% of the fishermen considered that their quality of life was good. Most of these traditional fishermen had low levels of life satisfaction. Therefore, improving welfare through expansion of economic opportunities, access to health services, and community-based social support is needed to enhance the quality of life and resilience of the fishermen. Keywords: Fishermen, Life, Satisfaction, Traditional , Worker.

Abstract

Residents of Paropo I Village face serious challenges accessing clean water due to Lake Toba's declining quality and reduced mountain spring flow, especially during the rainy season. KJA (Keramba Jaring Apung) workers often use untreated lake water for hygiene, increasing dermatitis cases. A community service program was developed to address this issue, supporting SDGs 3 and 6 by promoting environmental stewardship and appropriate clean water technologies. Previous research identified underutilization of clean water facilities (CWF) due to low public awareness and poor maintenance. The program fosters behavior change and public health improvement through community engagement, educational videos, and mentoring KJA workers on hygiene practices. It also strengthens local capacity via the PANRAIR (Pantau dan Rawat Air Bersih) initiative, empowering KJA owners to lead sustainable CWF management. Expected outcomes include better sanitation knowledge, improved hygiene, and stronger governance. Outputs include media coverage, educational content, and increased community participation. Partners contribute by offering meeting spaces and mobilizing support for CWF revitalization

Abstract

Manganese (Mn) is a heavy metal that naturally exists in the environment and can contaminate drinking water sources through anthropogenic activities, particularly in agricultural areas. Long-term exposure to Mn levels above safe limits can lead to neurological disorders in humans. This study aims to analyze the risk management of manganese contamination in drinking water sources in Langkat District, North Sumatra. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 8 samples of well water and 209 respondents. Data collection included water sampling and neurological symptom assessment using the Q18 questionnaire. Risk analysis was carried out based on concentration exposure, body weight, and daily water intake to calculate the Risk Quotien (RQ). Manganese concentrations in water ranged from 0.991 mg/L–2.809 mg/L, exceeding the Indonesian Ministry of Health threshold of 0.1 mg/L. Six respondents experienced numbness, and four experienced palpitations. Risk management analysis showed a safe body weight at 36.26–141.81 kg, the safe length of residence ranged at 23.01–58.72 years, and safe Mn concentration at 0.62–2.78 mg/L. This study provides important scientific evidence for developing risk management strategies for manganese contamination in drinking water to prevent neurological issues in Langkat Regency. Recommendations were given to improve water quality monitoring and community health education.

Abstract

Background: Air pollution is currently dominated by the transportation sector, which is the second-largest contributor after the energy sector in Indonesia. Its impacts not only damage the environment but also pose serious health risks. As an educated group, students need to take mitigation actions. This study aims to analyze the correlation between environmental knowledge and climate change mitigation efforts in the transportation sector among students of the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Method: This research used an analytical survey design. The population consisted of 1,403 undergraduate students from the 2021–2024 cohorts, with a sample of 93 respondents determined using the Slovin formula and selected through accidental sampling. The inclusion criteria were students who owned private transportation. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods. Results: Most respondents were female (87.1%) and aged 20–22 years (68.8%), with monthly allowances ranging from Rp500,000 to Rp5,000,000. Motorcycles were the most common mode of transport (83.9%), used 5–6 days per week (71%), with 73.1% using Pertalite fuel. The average weekly travel distance was 78.494 km, with fuel consumption of 7.819 liters and a cost of Rp105,903.23. The mean annual CO₂ emission was 0.74784 tons, ranging from 0.038 to 2.89 tons. Students demonstrated good knowledge (87.1%) and attitudes (89.2%), but mitigation actions remained low (57%). Conclusion: Public Health students at Universitas Sumatera Utara possess good knowledge and attitudes toward climate change mitigation, yet their practical actions remain limited, such as not turning off vehicle engines when idling.
