Abstract

This study aimed to investigate senior high school students’ reading habits and their reading comprehension of short story in English. There are several categories were asked to the students in order to find out their reading habits category, the amount of reading practice, the length of time having reading habits, the types of the text read, the number of books read, the number of publish writing, the respondent of their English reading habits, the EFL students’ purpose of reading English text, the motivation of the EFL students to read English and the last the belief of EFL students about reading English. Moreover, the categories tested in reading comprehension test are main idea, finding detail information, inference, reference, and vocabulary. The participants of this research were 66 of second grade students of SMAN 1 Gunung Tuleh who took English as elective course. This study employed descriptive research. The instrumentations of this research were questionnaire and reading test. The result of this research showed that students’ reading habit is strongly influences their reading ability to comprehend short story I English. Reading habit has positive impact towards the students reading comprehension. Nevertheless, it have negative impact toward students’ reading comprehension. Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the use of grammatical cohesive devices in an analytical exposition text written by eleventh grade students of MAN 2 Padang based on Halliday and Hasan’s theory (1976). Grammatical cohesive devices was used in order to write a cohesive text for helping both writer and reader. The participants of this research were 65 eleventh grade students in MAN 2 Padang. This study was descriptive qualitative research used in analysing the grammatical cohesive devices in an analytical exposition text. The instrumentations of this research were There were some instrumentations used in this research such as: writing test, table analysis and formulation. The findings of the research showed that all of the grammatical cohesive devices; reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction; used by the students in writing a text. There were 1.225 grammatical cohesive used by the students in writing an analytical exposition text. However, ellipsis and substitution were rarely used in that text.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate senior high school students’ ability in analyzing the poetic elements of poem in English and the difficulties faced by the students in analyzing the poetic elements of poem in English. The participants of this research were 19 eleventh grade students in SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP Padang who take the English subject as their elective subject. This study is descriptive research with quantitative approach. The instrumentation of this research is test. The result showed that the level mastery of the students in analyzing the poetic element of poem in English is poor. Based on the data taken, the hardest poetic element for students is onomatopoeia and the easiest is simile. And it can be concluded that students' ability in analyzing the poetic elements of poem in English is and students have difficulty in analyzing poetic elements.Key words: ability, difficulties, poetic elements

Abstract

This study aims to determine the ability of sixth semester students in analyzing figurative language in English poetry. The participants in this study were 30 sixth semester students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Language and Arts, Padang State University who took microteaching as a compulsory subject. This research is a descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The instrumentation of this research is a test. The test results in this study indicate that the level of student mastery in analyzing figurative language in English poetry is low. Based on the data taken in the test, metaphor is the most difficult element and simile is the easiest element. And it can be concluded that the students' ability to analyze the elements of English poetry is low

Abstract

The aim of this qualitative research is to compare the gender role representation in two English textbooks for twelfth grade senior high school students. The first textbook published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture and second textbook published by Erlangga.  Content analysis was used as the research method of this study. Logsdon’s theory of gender representation was utilized to analyze the roles of gender representation in both textbooks. The results show that gender roles in both textbooks are dominated by male. It showed that male roles in both textbook tend to be professional occupation such as president, programmer, director, etc. in addition, female roles tend to  be social occupation such us secretary, teacher, housewife, etc. in conclusion, it was also found that gender stereotype was exist in male and female occupation in both textbooks. However, when both textbooks were compared, there is more gender equality of textbook published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture Bahasa Inggris than textbook published by Erlangga Pathway to English. It shows that the authors of Bahasa Inggris made an effort to promote gender equity.

Abstract

The most common online gamification application in Basic Grammar Class at Universitas Negeri Padang are Quizizz, Wordwall, Kahoot!, iSpring, etc. there are challenges of using online gamification as a method of learning Basic Grammar and students faced many internal challenges along with external challenges. The purpose of this study is to know the internal and external challenges faced by English department students in using online gamification in Basic Grammar Class in Universitas Negeri Padang. The research instruments employed are interviews and questionnaire. 94 students enrolled in the basic grammar course responded to the questionnaire, while 9 of them responded to the individual interview session. Furthermore, this study attempts to provide insights into the barriers and challenges that can be considered when integrating the established gamification frameworks. it is possible to conclude that students experienced difficulties when using gamification concerning external and internal challenges. External Challenges are the weaknesses caused by the environment, like a competitive environment, a lack of an internet network, the lecturer assigning too many tasks and assignments, and a lack of time management. internal challenges are  Individual weaknesses such as knowledge and attitude. The internal challenges are as follows: a lack of content knowledge, a lack of student preparation, a lack of motivation, a lack of understanding, and a lack of vocabulary.

Abstract

In learning English there are factors that determine or are called determinants. This research was conducted at Padang State University to find out the determinants of learning English in children with visual impairments. There were seven respondents who were studying at Universitas Negeri Padang.  This study was conducted with qualitative methods and using a questionnaire as a tool of data collection. The results of the study show that the determinants of learning English of students with visual impairment at Universitas Negeri Padang are aptitude, motivation and opportunity. Based on the research results, the percentage of respondents' answers for aptitude is 53%, then the percentage of respondents' answers for motivation is 71% and the percentage of answers for opportunity is 67%. This percentage is sufficient to answer that aptitude, motivation and opportunity are determinants in learning English for students with visual impairment at Padang State University.

Abstract

The rapid development of technology has contributed to the development in the world of education, especially in learning media. Currently, there are many YouTube creators who create educational content, including the application of German conversation in daily life. However, the video channel cannot be considered as a good and appropriate learning medium if the videos do not meet the rules of speaking learning and must comply with the criteria for a good teaching medium. Therefore, before using the medium, it must be ensured that the medium is suitable for use according to the criteria. The purpose of the research is to analyze the suitability of “Asking for Opinion Video produced by Ruangguru” with the teaching principles of speaking skills. This research employed a quantitative descriptive design that concerns with analysis of learning materials In teaching principles; this video fulfils two out of three principles. The video provides something for learners to talk about and manipulates physical arrangements to promote speaking practice. Meanwhile, the video does not create opportunities for students to interact by using group work or pair work. In addition, based on the video analysis, the video fulfils five out of five which means all of the principles. The video is relevant to the substance of the material. The video is compatible with the curriculum and basic competency. The video is attractive. The duration of the video is appropriate. Lastly, the video is valid and original to be used.
