Abstract

Blood donation is a humanitarian activity that benefits patients in need of a blood transfusion. However, the process of donating blood can also pose health risks to donors, especially if they are not in optimal condition or lack knowledge of proper first aid measures. Most blood donors experience mild side effects such as dizziness, weakness, or nausea, while in certain cases, more serious reactions like fainting or bleeding at the needle insertion site may occur. Therefore, understanding First Aid in Accidents (P3K) is essential for prospective blood donors so they can prevent, recognize, and properly manage these side effects. Based on this, an educational outreach program has been conducted for the community of Tamparang Keke Subdistrict, Mamajang District, Makassar City. This outreach program aims to enhance basic knowledge among community members who wish to donate blood regularly.

Abstract

A donor is someone who gives blood or blood components so that they can be used by others. Blood transfusion is a blood or blood components distribution activity from donors to patients with special considerations. Blood transfusion carry the risk of transmitting infection that can endanger the recipient patients. Transfusion-transmitted infections are pathogens that can weakenbthe immune system. These infections can include HIV, HBsAg, HCV, and Syphilis. Pre-transfusion screening is necessary to minimize the risk of infection spread. Pre-transfusion screening tests that can be performed include chemiluminescent immunoassay (CHLIA) and nucleic acid testing (NAT). These tests can detect the presence and quantify the titer of antigens in the serum and blood of potential donors. Screening for transfusion-transmitted infections is a blood safety measure aimed at minimizing the risk of infection transmission to blood recipients, healthcare workers, and the environment, conducted prior to the blood transfusion process. The high incidence of Transfusion-Transmitted Infections in donor blood units underscores the importance of accurate and precise screening. Testing must have high sensitivity and specificity to prevent false-negative results due to low analyte levels.

Abstract

Blood transfusion requires the availability of high-quality blood, which is determined, among others, by the donor's hemoglobin (Hb) level. One factor that may affect Hb is sleep quality. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between sleep quality and hemoglobin levels among prospective blood donors at UDD PMI South Sulawesi Province in 2025. Methods: An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 100 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while Hb levels were measured using a hemoglobinometer. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. Results: The majority of respondents (75%) had good sleep quality, while 25% had poor sleep quality. Normal Hb levels (12.5–17 g/dL) were found in 96% of respondents, while 3% were low and 1% were high. The Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between sleep quality and Hb levels (p = 0.050). Conclusion: Good sleep quality is significantly associated with normal hemoglobin levels in prospective donors. Educational programs about healthy sleep patterns before donation are necessary to improve donor eligibility and ensure a safe blood supply.
