Abstract

Low crop production is acid dryland area of South Sulawesi is due to low availability of P in the soils. One of alternatives that can be performed to overcome the problems of acid soils having high level of exchangeable Al, is through the addition of organic material. In the upland areas in South Sulawesi, crop rice, maize and groundnut crop residues are readily available, but the crop residues are generally only used as animal feed or even burned. This study was aimed to elucidate the effects of groundnut compost on P uptake by maize in Ultisol of Moncongloe, South Sulawesi. Eight kilograms of air dried soil was mixed with compost according to the following treatments; 0, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 t compost/ha. All pots received 200 kg/ha KCl and 300 kg Urea/ha as basal fertilizers. Two maize seeds were planted in each pot and thinned to one plant per pot after one week. At harvest maize shoot dry weight and maize root dry weight, length of maize cop, cob weight, cob diameter, weight grains per cob, P uptake by maize, P content in maize grain, soil available P were measured. Results of the study showed that groundnut compost has the ability to improve the availability of P in the soil and increase P uptake by maize grown on an Ultisol of South Sulawesi. Application of 25 t groundnut compost/ha was the optimal rate that can be used to increase P availability in an Ultisol of South Sulawesi.

Abstract

PPUPIK Business Unit Muhammadiyah University Certified Plant Seed Production Center Makassar is a science and technology-based business unit that aims to develop campus entrepreneurship based on research results. The main product of this business unit is hybrid corn seeds, but in the process of producing corn seeds in addition to producing economically valuable corn seeds also produce corn waste which can cause problems if not handled. PPUPIK developed various waste corn compost products for the development of new business units. The production activities of various corn waste into compost products aim to make corn waste as a product of economic value and also as a place of practice for students in the application of science and technology and science-based entrepreneurial activities. The method of implementing the activity is divided into 5 stages, namely: 1) Production of various waste corn compost; 2) Analysis of nutrient content of compost; 3) Product label design; 4) Compost packaging; 5) Promotion and marketing of products. This activity involved students of the Faculty of Agriculture, the University of Muhammadiyah Makassar in the production, label design and promotion and marketing of products. The results obtained from this activity include; 1) students have experience in compost production, label design and product promotion and marketing; 2) the formation of a new business unit in PPUPIK activities; 3) produce economic value products from waste; 4) potential to get IPR.

Abstract

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is one of the favored vegetables in Indonesia. Besides being eaten, cucumbers can also be used for cosmetics, medicines and industrial raw materials. To improve the growth quality of cucumber, it is very important to improve the media planting by using organic fertilizers from goat manure and cow manure. The study was conducted using a Randomized Block Design with 2 factors. The first factor is the dose of goat manure with 3 levels which Control; Goat manure 75g/polybag; and Goat manure 150g/polybag. The second factor is the dose of cow manure with 3 levels, Control; Cow manure 75 g/polybag; and Cow manure 150 g/polybag. The results showed that the application of 150 g/polybag of goat manure and 75 g/polybag of cow manure gave the best effect on the vegetative growth of cucumber. The combination between 150 g/polybag of goat manure and 75 g/polybag of cow manure showed the best interaction effect on the number of leaves and root dry weight of cucumber plants.

Abstract

Abstract

Pakcoy plants need nutrients like POC and organic growing media such as charcoal, cocopeat and sawdust to grow well. This research aims to determine the response of pakcoy plants (Brassica rapa L.) to various planting media with bamboo shoot POC at different concentrations, as well as the interaction between the two. This research was structured using a randomized block design (RAK) in factorial form, with the first factor being planting media using husk charcoal (M1), sawdust (M2) and cocopeat (M3), while the second factor was POC treatment which consisted of 4 doses, namely; 0 ml POC/100 ml water (D0), 20 ml POC/100 ml water (D1), 40 ml POC/100 ml water (D2), and 60 ml POC/100ml water (D3). Pakcoy plant variables observed were plant height, number of leaves, leaf area index, fresh weight of stover, wet weight of roots, and root length. The data analysis used was analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a confidence level of 95% (α 0.05) and α 0.01). If p ≥ α 0.05, then the BNJ 0.05 further test is carried out (5% confidence level). The results of the study showed that the interaction between the planting medium used and the POC dose of bamboo shoots only had a significant effect on the root length of pak choy plants in the combination of sawdust planting medium and POC 60 ml/100 ml water (M3D3), while the other parameters did not have a real impact. Partially, 99% of the best response of pakchoy plants was using charcoal husk planting medium (M1), while using POC bamboo shoots showed the best response was shown when using a POC dose of 60 ml/100 ml water.

Abstract

Abstract

Sweet potato plants require bed height and type of mulch for good growth and production. This research aims to determine the effect of bed height and mulch type on sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) production. The study used a factorial randomized block design (RBD) with 2 factors. The first factor is the treatment of bed height and the second is the mulch type. The research was analyzed using analysis of variance and continued with an honest significant difference (HSD) test which will be done using the Excel application. The research showed that bed height and partial use of mulch significantly affected tuber production in sweet potatoes. The best bed height is 30 cm. The use of silver-black plastic mulch has a significant influence on sweet potato production.  The interaction between bed height and mulch type only significantly affected tuber length in sweet potatoes
