Abstract

In Kelurahan Ulak Karang Utara, Padang City, it produces garbage that comes from households every day. This waste is always thrown into the trash cans and then transported by the Kelurahan cleaners, thrown into the TPS, and finally dumped into the TPA. However, currently, the community has not yet implemented waste processing. Also, PKK mothers do not understand the benefits that can be obtained from sorting the waste in the household. The purpose of this activity is to increase knowledge and understanding as well as public awareness about waste processing to increase family income. This activity was carried out in Ulak Karang Utara Village, Padang City, with the target of PKK women's activities in Ulak Karang Village. The activity method used was counseling and training. The implementation of the activity began with an initial meeting between the presentation team, the village head, and the PKK's head, Ulak Karang Utara village. Furthermore, socialization was carried out on household-level waste processing at routine PKK women's meetings. At the end of the socialization, a question and answer session was conducted to see the participants' level of knowledge and understanding. The socialization of waste processing at the household level is the first step for PKK women of Ulak Karang Utara Village to sort waste from the beginning and ultimately reduce the amount of waste generated in the TPA. Waste sorting and processing training can be processed into compost so that it can increase family income. It is hoped that from this activity, PKK women can change their minds that sorting waste is carried out from the start starting at home.

Abstract

This research explores the role of Pasar Bawah as the nucleus of urban growth in Pekanbaru, focusing on identifying supportive and inhibiting factors affecting its development and formulating strategies to enhance its role in city development. A qualitative approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews with traders, visitors, and relevant stakeholders, alongside direct observations of market infrastructure and facilities. Findings reveal Pasar Bawah's pivotal roles as a local economic center, a shopping tourism attraction, a job creator, a stabilizer of the local economy, and a hub for social and cultural interactions. Supportive factors such as strategic location, diverse product availability, tradition, and government support contribute positively, while inadequate infrastructure, competition from modern markets, cleanliness and security issues, and lack of promotion pose significant challenges. Recommended strategies to augment Pasar Bawah's role include infrastructure revitalization, enhanced promotion and branding, collaboration with modern shopping centers, improved security and cleanliness measures, and empowerment of trader communities. This study aims to provide guidance for the development of traditional markets as integral components of sustainable and inclusive urban development.

Abstract

Metaphorical architecture translates cultural and natural phenomena into readable spatial narratives. This article develops a framework of five variables—source metaphor, key attributes, domain transfer, spatial narrative, and symbolic legibility—synthesized from comparative precedent studies (Libeskind’s Jewish Museum Berlin and the Aceh Tsunami Museum) and applies it to the design of the Painan Maritime Museum in West Sumatra. Local sources such as the traditional pincalang boat, Indian Ocean waves, and communal fishing activities are transformed into a ship-oriented elongated mass, undulating façade, net-patterned secondary skin, and sequential linear circulation forming a symbolic “voyage”: embarkation, tension, climax, reflection, and epilogue. The analysis reveals a balance between iconic legibility and conceptual depth, enabling visitors to intuitively perceive local maritime identity. This study contributes to the development of a transferable design methodology for metaphor-based museums and provides contextual site recommendations for the coastal landscape of Carocok Beach, Painan.

Abstract

Uneven regional development may lead to disparities in economic performance across regions. West Sumatra Province, which consists of seven cities and twelve regencies, exhibits diverse economic, demographic, and natural resource characteristics that contribute to variations in regional development. This study aims to analyze patterns of economic development and the level of regional inequality among districts and cities in West Sumatra Province during the period 2011–2019. The analysis employs the Klassen typology to classify regional economic growth patterns and the Williamson Index to measure the degree of regional inequality. Secondary data on Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) and GRDP per capita were obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics. The results of the Klassen typology analysis indicate that most cities in West Sumatra Province fall into the category of advanced and rapidly growing regions, while several regencies are classified as developed but depressed, fast-growing, or relatively lagging regions. Furthermore, the Williamson Index results show that regional inequality in West Sumatra Province during the study period remains at a low level and tends to approach zero, suggesting that economic growth and development across regions are relatively even.

Abstract

Regional development has introduced land access through a main road, leading to shifts in settlement orientation and the spatial configuration of Sungai Pinang Nagari, a fishing village in Pesisir Selatan Regency. Previously oriented toward water as the primary access, the spatial layout along the riverbanks now faces the risk of degradation due to these changes. Therefore, a study is needed to plan the spatial integration of existing areas. This research employed a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative rationalistic methods to holistically understand local spatial values and quantitative methods based on the Space Syntax concept—specifically, integrity analysis—to identify spaces with high integration value. These highly integrated spaces function as connectors and integrators, linking and harmonizing with other spatial zones. The findings reveal three high-integrity spaces: Integrity Space A along the coastal zone, Integrity Space B in the communal zone, and Integrity Space C along the riverbank zone. These spaces form integrative areas known as “grey spaces,” which support and connect various community activities. This study concludes that despite the shift toward a land-based orientation, spaces rooted in local wisdom retain significant potential as integrative and connective elements within a sustainable spatial framework.
