Abstract

The research location is in Ketukah, Gayo Lues Aceh, which is composed of the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene Rampong Formation. Lithology includes sandstones, conglomerates, and mudstones. The study aims to determine the origin of the sandstones in the Rampong Formation. Provenance studies are beneficial in providing information for oil and gas exploration. The analysis is critical for understanding the sediment transport channel, the overall depositional pattern of the basin, and predicting the location of sand bodies in the basin. Because the Rampong Formation is located in the North Sumatra Basin, the availability of provenance information is useful in efforts to search for oil and gas potential in the future. In this research, we restrict the study to the provenance, which includes the tectonic setting, origin rock, and paleoclimate where these sandstones originate. The methods are geological mapping and petrographic analysis. In petrographic analysis, we use JMicrovision to calculate mineral composition. The results showed that the sandstones of the Rampong Formation are arenite sandstones, especially sub-arkosic and sub-lith arenite. They originate from a tectonic setting known as a recycled orogen, related to the subduction of Eurasia and the Indo-Australian plates.  The sandstones were formed from granite that had undergone low metamorphism in the Late Cretaceous to the Eocene period. In addition, the paleoclimate is humid.

Abstract

Diagenetic studies observe the process of changing sedimentary deposits into sedimentary rocks. This study is critical because it relates to the quality of rock porosity, which can be filled by fluid.  The analysis of the Peunasu Formation is interesting because previous researchers considered that the Tertiary sedimentary rocks in the Northwest Aceh Basin are equivalent to rock units in the petroleum system in the North Sumatra Basin and Mergui Basin. Meanwhile, studies on the Peunasu Formation, a tertiary sedimentary rock, still need to be completed. Therefore, this study was carried out to determine the characteristics and diagenetic processes in the sandstone of the Peunasu Formation. The method used is petrographic observation, which identifies the composition of rocks along with textures such as grain size, roundness, sorting, grain contact, and porosity. The results are that the Peunasu Formation sandstone is classified as sublitharenite, lithic greywacke, and litharenite. The diagenetic regime is mesogenesis. In the mesogenesis stage, the sandstone of the Peunasu Formation experiences compaction, cementation, and dissolution. The porosity of the Peunasu Formation sandstone, as determined by the percentage of pores, exhibits a range of 0.5% to 16.8%, categorizing it as ranging from negligible to moderate. Compaction reduces the intergranular porosity, while the dissolution of grains contributes to the formation of secondary porosity.

Abstract

Earthquakes and tsunamis are natural disasters that can occur anywhere and anytime. Knowledge about the dangers of natural disasters needs to be imparted to the community so that they can understand the types and levels of danger that may arise. This is necessary to enhance the community's capacity to deal with disasters. Reflecting on the occurrence of the 2004 Aceh Earthquake and Tsunami, which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and caused hundreds of millions of US dollars in losses, increasing knowledge and understanding of disaster hazards needs to be continuously pursued. The repetition of these activities aligns the history of disaster events passed down through generations with the advancements in scientific knowledge and technological progress. Increasing knowledge of earthquake and tsunami hazards can be achieved, in part, through socialization efforts. One appropriate segment of society to receive reinforcement of knowledge through socialization activities is high school students, particularly the students of SMAN 1 Lhoknga, Aceh Besar Regency. Students are the younger generation whose roles can be agents of change within the wider community. Therefore, their role in the realm of disaster management needs to be supported by a good and competent capacity enhancement. Thus, students of SMAN 1 Lhoknga can understand the factors causing and the impacts arising from earthquake and tsunami disasters and actively participate in such events.

Abstract

This study investigates the hydrocarbon source rock potential and thermal maturity of shale and mudstone outcrop samples from the Baong, Peutu, and Bampo Formations in the North Sumatra Basin, Indonesia. These fine-grained, calcareous, organic-rich, and low-permeability rocks are widely recognized as potential hydrocarbon source rocks. Source rocks generate hydrocarbons through thermal maturation processes, and their effectiveness is primarily controlled by organic richness, kerogen type, and thermal maturity. A total of six (6) outcrop samples were collected and analyzed using Rock-Eval Pyrolysis and Vitrinite Reflectance methods to evaluate their geochemical characteristics. The Baong Formation samples show very good organic richness, with Total Organic Carbon (TOC) values ranging from 2.2 to 2.5%, and are dominated by Type II/III kerogen, indicating potential for mixed oil and gas generation. Tmax values of 428–429°C suggest that these samples are thermally immature. The Peutu Formation samples exhibit very good source rock potential, with TOC values of 3.3–3.8% and predominantly Type II/III kerogen, suitable for mixed oil and gas generation. Tmax values indicate thermal immaturity to early maturity. In contrast, the Bampo Formation samples are thermally mature but display poor organic richness (TOC < 0.5%) and low Hydrogen Index values, suggesting limited hydrocarbon generation potential dominated by Type III kerogen. Although interpretations are based on outcrop samples, the results provide important implications for evaluating the petroleum system of the North Sumatra Basin, particularly in understanding source rock distribution, quality, and maturity trends.

Abstract

This study examines the grain-size distribution of the Tutut Formation sandstone using granulometric analysis. The purpose of this granulometric observation is to determine the depositional environment and its transportation mechanisms. In addition to using granulometric methods, this study also includes geological mapping to observe the rock lithology in the field. The results show that the study location consists of sandstone and mudstone units of the Tutut Formation, Meulaboh sand deposit units, and alluvial deposit units. The characteristics of Tutut Formation sandstone are gray-brown, reddish-brown due to weathering, coarse to fine sand grain size, medium to slightly rounded roundness, and does not react with HCl. Based on granulometric analysis, Tutut Formation sandstone has an average grain size of 0.214-0.327 ϕ, which is classified as coarse sand. The degree of sorting is 0.321 ϕ to 0.417 ϕ, with an average of 0.35 ϕ, so it is classified as good. Skewness values range from 0.107 to 0.263, with an average of 0.1775 ϕ, indicating fine skewness. The 0.1775 ϕ of the average skewness value indicates that the flow in this depositional environment is turbulent and a river depositional environment. Meanwhile, the kurtosis value ranges from 0.060 to 0.11, indicating a platykurtic to highly platykurtic distribution, suggesting a fairly diverse and even grain-size distribution from fine sizes in the matrix to coarse sizes. The diverse grain size implies that the matrix fills the pores between coarse grains. Thus, porosity is not available and has no potential as a reservoir rock.

Abstract

Reclamation of former coal mining land is an obligation for mining companies to restore environmental conditions that have been disturbed due to mining activities. PT Bara Energi Lestari has carried reclamation and revegetation efforts in its former mining areas. The use of satellite imagery or remote sensing plays an important role in evaluating reclamation and revegetation activities. Satellite imagery greatly facilitates the evaluation process, particularly in analyzing land cover, improving time efficiency, and providing diverse visual data. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the progress of revegetation in the reclamation areas of PT Bara Energi Lestari during the third reclamation period (2020–2024) and to assess the success of revegetation efforts through the analysis of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The study utilized NDVI data derived from Sentinel-2 imagery acquired from 2020 to 2024, which were spatially analyzed to examine changes in revegetation levels within the reclamation areas over the study period. The results of the analysis show that the revegetation efforts carried out in the reclamation areas of PT Bara Energi Lestari during the 2020–2024 period, which initially planned a reclamation area of 46.31 hectares, were ultimately realized on a reduced area of 43.91 hectares. Based on the analysis, the reclamation area from 2020 showed a vegetation cover of 98%, the 2021 area had 99%, the 2022 area had 89%, while the 2023 area dropped to 16%, and the 2024 area had only 9% vegetation cover.
