Abstract

A few decades ago it was generally accepted from experimental studies, animal experiments, and epidemiological cohort studies that atherogenesis is linked to oxidative stress and that antioxidant supplementation, notably vitamin E supplementation, is associated with a low incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This view led to the widespread use of vitamin E and other antioxidants for reducing CVD morbidity and mortality. In vitro and animal studies on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of alpha- and gamma-tocopherols also found that these antioxidants had anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract

Worldwide, the proportion of people aged 60 and over is growing faster than any other age group. It has been well-established that the aging process can be associated with increased susceptibility to chronic conditions, disability, and co-morbidity, which however may be minimized or even partially reversed by physical activity. The assessment of physical activity is becoming an increasingly important component in the evaluation of elderly persons. Nutritional intake and status play an essential role in determining the physical activity level potentially capable of minimizing the health burden of older persons. The objective of this study was to find out whether nutritional intake and status were correlated with physical activity in community-dwelling older persons. The study population included 219 aged 60 to 69 years, of whom complete measures of socio-demographic characteristics, nutritional status, nutritional intake and physical activity were obtained. Serum total protein, albumin, globulin and hemoglobin concentration were measured as nutritional indicators (biomarkers). The nutrient content of food intakes was analyzed and calculated by “Nutrisurvey” software. Analysis indicated that there was a significant correlation between nutritional biomarkers [total protein (r=-0.211; p=0.002) and globulin (r=-0.247; p=0.000)] and physical activity. Compared to other food intakes, intakes of carbohydrate (r=0.241; p=0.001) and animal protein (r=0.149; p=0.027) were significantly correlated with physical activity. Our findings lend support to the existence among healthy older persons of a relationship between nutrional intake and status and physical activity.

Abstract

Latar BelakangJumlah populasi dan umur harapan hidup lanjut usia (lansia) semakin meningkat akibat perbaikan dari pelayanan kesehatan masyarakat dan intervensi kedokteran. Dengan semakin meningkatnya umur harapan hidup, maka sangat penting untuk memperbaiki kualitas hidup lansia. World Health Organization (WHO) telah mengembangkan sebuah instrumen untuk mengukur kualitas hidup seseorang yaitu WHO Quality of Life -BREF (WHOQOL-BREF).

Abstract

Obesity in many countries is a major public health problem. The health problems associated with an increase in the proportion of elderly in the population are further compounded by the increasing prevalence of obesity and overweight in older people. The aimed of this study was to explore any difference of quality of life (QOL) attributable body mass index (BMI) categories using the WHOQOL-BREF instruments. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in Mampang Prapatan district, South Jakarta. A total of 296 free-living elderly aged 60 years and above were participated in this study. BMI was calculated as the weight (kg) divided by the square of the height (m2). Quality of life was measured by WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire in the Indonesian language version. The results showed that the percentage of overweight subjects was 27.5% in male and 22.2% in female elderly, while the percentage of obese subjects was respectively 8.3 and 13.2.1% respectively. In males, the mean scores on each domain of the QOL were higher compared with females. The significant differences were in social relationship (p=0.000) and environment (p=0018) domains. Among male and female elderly the highest mean scores of each domain of QOL was observed in the environment domain, and mean scores of the environment domain was significantly higher in males compare with females (p=0.018). The results have practical implications for the health of older persons because they show that the overweight have a worse score in two QOL domains, namely psychological health and environment.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important global cause of mortality, morbidity, and health-system costs,(1,2) with significant increases in its prevalence and number of cases in the last 30 years. It constitutes one of the four non communicable diseases (NCDs) targeted for action by world leaders.According to WHO estimates, in 2014 there were 422 million adults with DM aged 18 years or older, with around half in the WHO South-East Asia and Western Pacific Regions.(3) The prevalence of DM and the number of adults with DM in low- and middle-income countries have over the last decade increased at a greater rate than in high-income countries. The global DM prevalence increased by more than 100% in men and by 60% in women, resulting in a predominance of males with DM in 2014 as compared with a higher DM female prevalence in 1980.

Abstract

Orthodontics plays a role in an individual’s appearance which can affect the perception of others that can vary greatly depending on their educational and social economic background. Objective: To determine if there were differences between dentist’s and non-dentist’s perceptions on facial attractiveness with normal occlusion and various types of malocclusions in Indonesian population. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 80 dentists and 80 non-dentists aged 23-49 years old. The perceptions differences between groups were assessed using visual analogue scale on ten photographs for each gender that have been digitally manipulated. Mann Whitney test was used to analyze the differences. Results: Normal occlusion is the most attractive condition for dentists and non-dentists. There are significant differences between dentist’s and non-dentist’s perceptions of facial attractiveness showing normal occlusion, increased overjet, increased overbite, reduced overjet, reduced overbite, mild crowding, open bite, and reversed overjet malocclusions (p < 0.05). Whilst both groups agreed (p > 0.05) that severe and moderate crowding were the least attractive malocclusion. Conclusion: Regarding the facial attractiveness, dentist’s and non-dentist’s perceptions are significantly different for most malocclusion types. However, there is an agreement that severe and moderate crowding are the most disturbing malocclusion that have a considerable effect on facial attractiveness.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of ultrasonic tip with and without solvent in removing gutta-perca and bioceramic sealer from the middle and apical third of the root canals. Methods: This is a true experimental study with randomized pretest-posttest control group design. Eighteen freshly extracted straight single-rooted mandibular first premolars were confirmed by CBCT and selected. The teeth were decoronated until a length of 16 ± 0.5mm. The teeth were prepared and obturated using gutta-percha and bioceramic sealer with a hydraulic condensation technique. Pre-instrumentation CBCT imaging of all teeth was carried out to obtain the initial volume of the obturation material. After incubating for 30 days, the treated teeth were randomly divided into three groups (n = 6): ultrasonic and xylene, ultrasonic and orange oil, and ultrasonic only. Post-instrumentation CBCT was carried out and the amount of obturation material removed was calculated using CT Analyser. The two-way ANOVA was used to determine the solvent and location interaction. Results: The results showed that there was no significant difference among the groups based on the treatment and location (p > 0.05). In addition, no significant interaction was found in relation to the cleanliness of the root canal (p > 0.05). Conclusion: There was no difference in the effectiveness of ultrasonic obturation material cleaning with and without endodontic solvents. Based on the results, the obturation material with the most residue is a sealer.
