Abstract

ABSTRACT Women's participation in the labor market has continued to increase; however, a substantial proportion of women remain employed in the informal sector, which is generally characterized by lower income, limited labor protection, and greater employment vulnerability than the formal sector. Previous studies have examined the determinants of women's employment in the informal sector, yet most have focused on specific regions, have not utilized the latest National Labor Force Survey (SAKERNAS) microdata, and have rarely estimated the probability of informal employment using binary logistic regression combined with marginal effects analysis. This study aims to analyze the effects of age, marital status, education, and income on the probability of women working in the informal sector rather than the formal sector in Central Lombok Regency in 2023. This research employed a quantitative explanatory approach using secondary data from the August 2023 SAKERNAS microdata. The data were analyzed using binary logistic regression and marginal effects estimation with Stata 17. The results indicate that age has a positive and statistically significant effect on the probability of women working in the informal sector, whereas education and income have significant negative effects. Marital status shows a positive but statistically insignificant relationship. The Pseudo R² indicates that the model demonstrates a good level of fit in distinguishing women employed in the informal and formal sectors. These findings highlight the importance of improving educational attainment, strengthening human capital, and expanding access to formal employment opportunities to reduce the dominance of women's employment in the informal sector in Central Lombok Regency.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology and the increasing digitization of various sectors have created new challenges and opportunities in the labor market. This research highlights the importance of digital skills and technological literacy as key factors in improving job prospects for millennials. In particular, the study underscores the need for young people in urban areas, such as Mataram City, to be equipped with competencies that align with the demands of the digital economy. As the workforce evolves, the ability to navigate digital tools, platforms, and systems is becoming crucial for both personal career development and organizational growth. The findings also reveal that while many millennials are familiar with basic digital tools, there is a significant gap when it comes to advanced technological skills, such as data analysis, software development, and cybersecurity. This discrepancy can limit their access to more specialized job opportunities, especially in a competitive digital job market. The study suggests that government programs, corporate initiatives, and educational reforms should focus on providing opportunities for digital upskilling that target both basic and advanced levels of technological proficiency. Moreover, this research points to the importance of fostering a culture of lifelong learning, where individuals continuously update their digital skills to stay relevant in the workforce. The rise of remote work and the gig economy has made it even more crucial for millennials to adapt to flexible work models and demonstrate their ability to work independently in digital environments. By enhancing their digital competencies, millennials can not only secure better job opportunities but also contribute more effectively to the digital economy, which is expected to continue growing in the coming years. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on the role of digital skills in employability, offering valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and businesses.
