Abstract

The Pesisir cattle are indigenous West Sumatera cattle. Their quality needs to be improved since they can live in local environment with sufficiently available feed resources. A research has been done to study the effects of feeding level and fattening period to the growth and the carcass characteristics of the Pesisir cattle. This research was designed by using block design with three blocks. The first factor was two levels of feeding, i.e: A1 = 50 % concentrate + 50 % ammoniated rice straw, A2 = 75 % concentrate + 25 % ammoniated rice straw. The second was time period of fattening, i.e: B1 = 3 months and B2 = 4 months. The results showed that there was no interaction between the level of feeding and fattening period to the growth, percentage of carcass, the back fat thickness and the rib eye area of the Pesisir cattle (P> 0.05). The higher of concentrate percentage, the higher the growth of the cattle, the thicker the back fat and the wider the rib eye area will be (P<0.05). Similarly, the longer the fattening, the higher the percentage of carcass, the thicker the back fat and the wider rib eye area will be.

Abstract

Pollination is an essential part of increasing crop production. One insect that acts as a pollinator on plants is the Galo-galo bee. Stingless bee cultivation can help in the pollination process and serve as a producer of pure honey, which also has the potential to increase farmers' income. This activity aims to enable partner groups at the Andalas University campus to cultivate stingless bees on agricultural land. The methods used in this service are counseling, mentoring, training, and piloting. Extension materials were carried out to increase farmers' knowledge about the potential of stingless bees, the introduction of natural colony trapping methods, and bee food sources. The service team has brought several Galo-galo bee colonies that farmer groups in Sungkai will maintain. By bringing the colony bees, farmers are given other material, namely how to transfer the colony to the cultivation box, install the honey box, and harvest. The results of this activity are as follows: 1) Increased knowledge, interest, and skills of partners in raising Galo-galo, which is integrated with agriculture. 2) Partner has a new business unit in the form of Galo-galo cattle. 3) Partners have a new commodity produced, namely Galo-galo honey. 4) Partners know and can cultivate bee food plants. This activity ran smoothly, and the target of the movement was achieved well. Farmers participating in the service have cultivated stingless bees on managed agricultural land.

Abstract

Pesisir cattle are local West Sumatra cattle that have the advantage of being resistant to disease and can survive by consuming foods that are not superior. Sutera Subdistrict is one of the centres of pesisir cattle farms in Pesisir Selatan District, West Sumatra. The existence of these pesisir cows began to decline because of the large number of pregnant females being cut and the number of breeders who left this cattle breeding business. One reason is that ineffective cattle maintenance with poor diet results in low performance and productivity, even if improved maintenance management such as good ration is provided, the productivity of the cow can be increased. Based on this, it is necessary to empower the community to raise livestock by providing rations that can meet the needs so that the productivity of cattle can be increased. The aim of this thematic KKN-PPM is how students are able to motivate and empower the community there. The method used in this achievement was the extension method and continued with demonstrations and going directly to the field. The activity carried out was technology transfer in the provision of rations for pesisir cattle, making a formulation of pesisir cattle rations as needed. The results obtained open the public's insight to maintain semi-intensive livestock by means of being grounded and their rations provided in accordance with the formulation of pesisir cattle rations made. The ration provided for pesisir cattle is in the form of a complete silage ration by utilizing a source of feed raw materials that are widely available there namely field grass, rice straw, rice bran and other feed sources. With complete silage, the ration helps farmers to be more effective in providing rations and can increase the productivity of pesisir cattle.

Abstract

Jorong Rimbo Janduang is located in Nagari Lingkuang Aua, Pasaman District, West Pasaman Regency. The main livelihoods of the local people are gardeners and traders. There are many types of plant vegetation in Jorong Rimbo Janduang, some of which can be the main source of food for bees, but the community around the location has not cultivated stingless bees (galo-galo). Raising gallo-galo is different from raising cows, goats, and chickens because we do not need to look for food every day, as long as there are lots of bee-feeding plants growing around it. The success of gallo-galo cultivation is 70-80% influenced by the availability of feed sources in the form of nectar, pollen, and resin obtained from forage plant vegetation around the cultivation site. This community engagement activity aims to increase the knowledge and the desire of the community for stingless bee farming, increase the vegetation of forage plants around the location for beekeeping, and improve the community's economy. The methods used were counseling, mentoring, training, and modeling. The method of implementing science and technology is carried out by applying several technologies according to the objectives of these social services.

Abstract

One of the things that can be done to increase production in Galo-Galo beekeeping is to plant flowering vegetation around the cultivation location. Some flower plants that are good for planting are Mexican Creeper, Xanthostemon, and Calliandra. These three plants can attract Galo-Galo honey bees to increase honey production. They will be able to improve the farmer's economy in Sungkai, Lambung Bukik Village, and Pauh Padang District. This community service activity aimed to provide understanding and flowering plant seeds to increase the production of Galo-Galo bee honey. The method used was counselling and practice. Planting flower vegetation was carried out in practice directly at the farm location. The activity resulted in 1) Increased partners' knowledge, interest, and skills in breeding Galo-Galo integrated with flowering vegetation. 2) Partners know and can increase the productivity of Galo-Galo bee honey. The activity ran smoothly, and the activity target was appropriately achieved. Farmers participating in the service have been able to cultivate stingless bees and optimize production by planting flowering vegetation.

Abstract

A simple cultivation process and an excellent opportunity to improve the household economy is a type of business that must be continuously educated in the community. Galo-galo (Trigona bees) are a group of small, stingless bees belonging to the Meliponini group, which are closely related to the stinging honey bees (Apis spp) in the Apidae tribe, which can be cultivated. Galo-galo cultivation is a simple type of business and has good economic prospects for the community; for this reason, community service activities need to be carried out in Alai Galombang Village Pariaman City, West Sumatera, namely a sub-district that has potential natural resources that can be used to provide nectar (food source), provide pollen (seed producer) and provide resin (nest builder) as well as guarantee water availability. Galo-galo education in the community uses counselling (socialization) and mentoring methods. The results of the activity show that education on Galo-galo cultivation among the community has resulted in fundamental changes in interest, knowledge and skills in Galo-galo cultivation. The proof is that the community already has four colonies and has carried out the first harvest in two colonies with a production output of 450 grams, potentially improving its economy.

Abstract

Beef cattle are one of the livestock animals that produce meat with high economic value. In general, development faces many challenges because cattle farming is still managed traditionally by the community. Good Farming Practices (GFP) are guidelines for farmers in conducting livestock farming businesses. The objectives of this activity are: to increase the community's knowledge about the application of good farming practices (GFP) to beef cattle to improve production performance and increase community income. This activity was conducted with the Mak Uniang Livestock Group in Rindang Alam, Koto Luar Village, Pauh District, Padang City. The method used is PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal), where partner lecturers directly act as facilitators and can immediately facilitate the community/partners in the implementation of activities. The learning method used to achieve the target activities is the participatory method. The partners of this activity are the Mak Uniang livestock group and the community in Rindang Alam, Koto Luar Village, Pauh District, Padang City. The stages of the activity include socialization/extension, which consists of presenting material and discussions. The material provided includes good livestock management (good farming practices). This activity received a very positive response and enthusiasm from the farmers. This is reflected in the farmers' interest in asking questions and their desire for technical guidance to promote sustainable farming. Additionally, the results of this activity show an increase in knowledge, understanding, and skills of the partners in implementing good farming practices (GFP) for beef cattle. The farmers have even committed to implementing what was conveyed by the speakers regarding the application of good farming to their cattle.
