Abstract

Non-dental glass fiber is one of the materials that can be used to increase the impact strength of a acrylic resin base plate, containing a similar composition to that of dental e-glass fiber. Orientation and positions of fiber affect the reinforcement effectiveness. This research aimed to examine the effect of the orientation of non-dental glass fiber in the compression position on the impact strength of an acrylic resin base plate. The research was conducted on 16 acrylic resin plates with fiber (65 mm x 10 mm x 2.5 mm) addition. The samples were divided into 4 groups (combination of different woven orientation unidirectional, bidirectional woven in the compression position, and control). The material used in this study was heat-cured acrylic resin QC-20 brand, non-dental glass fiber (without any brand). Impact strength was tested using an impact testing machine. The data obtained were analyzed using one-way ANOVA test and LSD (p<0.05). In this research the impact strength of the base plate with the addition of fiber increased 8.54 ± 2.21; 13.21 ± 2.34; 16.81 ± 2.80 kJ/m2 compared to that of the control group, i.e. 4.98 ± 1.05 kJ/m2. One-way ANOVA test showed a significant effect (p<0.05) of the fiber orientation variations on the compression position. This research concluded that the addition of nondental e-glass fiber (composed of SiO252.56-56.88%), diameter 17.12–20.03 µm) in the compression zone increases theimpact strength of acrylic resin base plate. Fibers with unidirectional orientationprovides the highest increase in the impact strength of acrylic resin base plate.

Abstract

Abstract: Acrylic resin material is often used in making dentures because the color is similar to gingiva, easy to process, small dimensional changes, and relatively cheap price. One of the conditions that must be met is that the final product is easy to polish. Snail shell can be used as an abrasive for polishing acrylic plates because it contains protein, phosphorus and calcium. This study aimed to find out whether snail shell (Lissachatina fulica) powder as an abrasive material could reduce the roughness of acrylic surfaces. This was a laboratory and experimental study. Samples of acrylic resin plates were divided into three groups, group A was polished using sandpaper, group B was polished using pumice, and group C was polished using snail shell powder. Each group had nine samples of acrylic resin plates. Surface roughness of samples was tested with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the surface of group C samples was the smoothest compared to the other groups tested with SEM. In conclusion, snail shell (Lissachatina fulica) powder can be used as an abrasive material to reduce the roughness of acrylic surfaces. Keywords: snail shell; surface roughness; acrylic resin plate   Abstrak: Bahan resin akrilik sering digunakan dalam pembuatan gigi palsu karena warnanya mirip dengan gingiva, mudah diolah, perubahan dimensi kecil, dan harganya relatif murah. Setiap kelompok memiliki sembilan sampel pelat resin akrilik.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  Introduction: A traumatic ulcer is an open wound on the skin or mucous membranes that often results from trauma, such as scratches, bites, shocks, or pressure. Rain tree leaves (Samanea saman) have the potential to reduce pain and anti-inflammatory effects thanks to the flavonoid content. This extract works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, which help limit inflammation and accelerate wound healing. This study aims to evaluate the effects of a 12% concentration rain tree leaf (Samanea saman) extract gel on fibronectin expression in the process of healing traumatic ulcers. Methods: This experimental laboratory study employed a post test only control group design. The sample consisted of male white rat wistar Rattus norvegicus and a gel of rain tree leaf extract extracted with a 98% ethanol solvent using a maceration method with a 12% concentration. Data analysis was performed using the Mann- Whitney U test. Results: The highest average was observed in the treatment group receiving the 12% rain tree leaf extract gel (Samanea saman), with an average value of 54.078, while the lowest average was found in the placebo gel control group, with a value of 22.462. Statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test revealed a significant difference between groups (p = 0.004, p < 0.05). Conclusion: A 12% concentration of rain tree leaves (Samanea saman) extract gel significantly enhances fibronectin expression, contributing to the healing process of traumatic ulcers. KEY WORDS: Traumatic ulcers, fibronectin, rain tree leaf extract gel (Samanea saman), wound healing process. Abstract

Consumption of sugary, acidic, and refined carbohydrate-rich foods and drinks is a major cause of tooth decay, increasing dental caries among children. This community service program aims to raise awareness, especially among school-aged kids, about the dangers of such snacks. Through an educational approach, leaflets about harmful snacks like candy, soda, and other sugary treats were distributed. Pre- and post-intervention questionnaires measured participants' understanding. Initially, most children were unaware of the dental health risks of sugary snacks. After the intervention, knowledge about toothdecay-causing snacks increased by 95%, alongside a better grasp of healthy habits to maintain dental health. Early education on proper food choices and dental care can reduce dental caries prevalence among children. This program successfully boosted dental health awareness in the elementary school environment.
