Abstract

The main problem of oral health in childhood is caries. Dental caries is caused by multifactorial factors including the host (tooth), substrate (food), microorganisms (bacteria) and time. Milk is a source of animal nutrition that is rich in calcium. Calcium plays an important role in the formation of dental hard tissue, making it more resistant to erosion and dental caries. By educating children at elementary school age to 'geminsu' love to drink milk can help children improve their ability to maintain oral health. This community service activity was carried out on students in grades 1-6 at SDN Lirboyo 1 Kediri City through several stages, namely pretest questionnaires, 'geminsu' education for oral health in infancy, posttest, door prize distribution, milk distribution, drinking milk together and group photos. The results of this community service showed that the percentage of knowledge about fond of drinking milk is important for oral health in infancy before education increased from 54% to 80%. The results of this service can be concluded that education on drinking milk can increase students' knowledge and awareness of the importance of milk for oral health during growth.

Abstract

The mouth sores are one of the most common oral lesions in adolescents, which refer to several different conditions, the most common of which are recurrent aphthous stomatitis and traumatic ulcers. Traumatic ulcers are generally caused by physical trauma such as biting while chewing, sharp foods, or improper brushing techniques. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is idiopathic, with predisposing factors of hormones, stress, and nutritional deficiencies. Although relatively mild, canker sores can cause pain, interfere with eating and speaking activities, and reduce quality of life. Early prevention is very important, one of which is through a nutritional approach. Pineapple (Ananas comosus) contains phytochemical compounds such as bromelain, vitamin C, and antioxidants which are known to have anti-inflammatory effects and accelerate wound healing. This community service activity aims to introduce the public, especially high school students, to mouth sores, their causes, how to prevent them, and the potential of pineapple as a natural agent in preventing canker sores. The activity was carried out in the framework of the Open House of the Bhakti Wiyata Kediri Health Science Institute and was attended by 100 high school students from various public and private schools in Kediri City and its surroundings, consisting of 57 female students and 23 male students. The activity methods were in the form of counseling, presentation, and pre and post tests. The survey results showed an increase in participant knowledge from 58.2% to 92.6%. This activity was effective in increasing student awareness of mouth sores and the benefits of pineapple in maintaining oral health.

Abstract

Perception of oral hygiene has a major impact on life expectancy worldwide, but in middle-income countries it is a problem, where oral health problems in Indonesia affect as much as 57.6% of the population. A semi-experimental study was conducted on February 21, 2025 on students at SMAN 1, SMAN  2, and Pondok Pesantren Mathlabul Ulum Jambu in Sumenep Regency, East Java, Indonesia. The study method was carried out offline (face-to-face) using a mixture of presentation media (power point) and booklets. The socialization participants were divided into two parts: pre-socialization (pre-test) and post-socialization (post-test). The socialization participants were given questions to assess their knowledge and perceptions of oral health before and after the socialization. Participants' knowledge was classified as sufficient, moderate, and low in understanding oral hygiene before and after the socialization. The average score for participants before the socialization was 60.66, and after the socialization it was 86.71. These results were significantly different with a p-value of 0.000 using the Wilcoxon statistical test. These data show that there is a positive role for dentists in improving dental and oral health in the environment of high school students so that dentists can play an active role in encouraging patients to pay more attention to dental and oral health awareness, especially for SMAN 1 and 2 in Sumenep Regency, East Java.
