Abstract

Berbicara merupakan keterampilan yang sangat dibutuhkan dalam mempelajari bahasa. Maka, setiap pembelajar bahasa harus bisa berbicara dengan baik dan benar sesuai dengan struktur tata bahasa yang dipelajari. Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengasah keterampilan berbicara siswa  menggunakan small group discussions (SGD). Pengabdian ini dilakukan di SMP Negeri 16 Kabupaten Sorong  dengan menggunakan metode pendampingan. Peserta yang terlibat dalam pengabdian ini adalah siswa-siswi kelas XI yang berjumlah 25 siswa-siswi dengan 5 instruktur. Dalam pelaksanaan pendampingan, peserta dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok dan setiap kelompok terdiri dari 5 siswa.  Hasil pencapaian peserta adalah 79,5%, dapat dikategorikan biak kemampuan peserta dalam menjawab pertanyaan. Disamping itu, guru yang mengampuh mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris juga turut serta dalam proses pendampingan yang dilakukan kepada siswa-siswi.

Abstract

This research focuses on the improvement of students` Speaking skills at Papua University by retelling stories through pantomime. This article focused on two research questions; is pantomime effective to improve the students` speaking at English Study Program? And are the students interested in learning speaking through pantomime? This researcher applied experimental research with pre-test and post-test design. This research was undertaken at the second semester English Study program. The numbers of population were 120 students and the researcher took 33 students from class A as samples using the purposive sampling technique. The researcher used questionnaires as instruments of the data collection. The result of this research shows that there were significant developments in students` speaking skills at the second semester English study Program at Papua University after conducting the treatments by using Retelling Story through Pantomime. In which the score of the t-test (6,23) is bigger than the score of the t-table (2,03). It means that Retelling Story through pantomime gives significant improvement to the students` speaking skills. In addition, the researcher found almost all of the students gave positive responses toward retelling stories through pantomime in improving speaking skills. Abstract

Teacher training activities in writing article and publication on the Open Journal System are strategic to be carried out. This is expected to have an impact on increasing the ability of teachers in writing scientific papers and also publications. In addition, it is hoped that through the writing culture, an academic climate will be developed among teachers. The implementation of training articles and publications in journals for Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) Kota Sorong group is expected to be a solution to the lack of teacher publications. In addition, participants who will take part in this training will share the knowledge gained with their fellow teachers at their home school. The results of this Community Service activity show an increase in the ability of teachers from the average pre-test score of 59 and post-test 89. The conclusion from this activity is that the training carried out has succeeded in increasing the competence of English teachers in Article Writing and Publication in the Open Journal System (OJS).

Abstract

English is an international language, and there are many people or students in the world learning English. All the students have different abilities or strategies for learning English. Without a plan and the students cannot improve their English skills well. So when the students want to learn English should have a strategy because it is will helpful. This research is to determine the method and obstacles English students face in learning English at home during the COVID-19 pandemic at students' universities. This is descriptive, using a qualitative approach with data collection techniques using interviews. The sample in this study was 5 participants from the English Department in the 7th semester of the academic year 2020./2021. The researcher found that of the five participants, the most widely used strategy by students was the first social strategy; most of them practiced English with their parents, family, or friends at home during the pandemic. The second is a compensation strategy; in this strategy, students learn English by listening to songs or reading books to improve their vocabulary. The third is a memory strategy; in this strategy, students learn by listening to songs, radio, or watching on youtube instead of taking vocabulary notes, and they memorize them during the pandemic. Constraints faced by students when learning English at home during the pandemic. Many obstacles faced by students, namely lack of money, not being able to buy internet quota, laziness to move because of the pandemic, unable to accept and laziness to take all the courses given by lecturers, and not having learning tools such as laptops, English dictionaries to help them learn English at University.
