Abstract

Recently, Tiktok has been widely used by netizens to express sympathy to each other, especially on unpleasant event. This research is based on how people interact in Tiktok regarding domestic abuse happenstance. This study aims to describe the politeness strategies used to express sympathy speech in the video of a domestic violence case on TikTok and the social factors influencing politeness strategies. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The data source comes from a Tiktok video with the account name @ilham. art59, containing news videos related to domestic violence experienced by a woman named S (initials) located in Makassar. There were 30 data samples of expressions of sympathy taken from screenshots in the Tiktok video comment section. This study uses the theoretical approach of Brown & Levinson's politeness strategy and sociopragmatic theory. The results show that the expression of sympathy in the video of domestic violence cases on Tiktok uses two politeness strategies: positive politeness and off-record. There are 6 forms of positive politeness strategies: sharing life experiences, encouraging, giving prayers, expressing sorrow, advising, and appreciating. People tend to use positive politeness strategies more than off-record strategies in expressing sympathy for victims of domestic violence. Three social factors influence politeness strategies: the situation and context of the event that triggers sympathy, the close relationship between netizens and victims of domestic violence, and collective community interaction. The research provides insights into social interactions on social media, particularly in expressing sympathy, and contributes to sociopragmatics studies.

Abstract

Interrogative sentences constitute one of the most important modes of sentences in any world language. By this type of sentence, the language speakers can get information regarding everything they do not know, something they hesitate, or anything that the hearer wants to agree with. As such, this mode of sentence should be mastered by all language learners. However, like any other mode of sentences, interrogative sentences are also differently structured across languages, bringing serious difficulties for all second language learners. Moreover, languages do not belong to the same family group, like Indonesian, which belongs to the Austronesian family group, and English, which belongs to the Indo-German family group. Concerning this matter, this research paper will briefly describe the differences in the use of Indonesian question words apa, siapa, berapa, di mana, bagaimana,and kapan and its English contrast with what, who, how many/much, where and when. By contrasting Indonesian interrogative sentences containing apa, siapa, berapa, di mana, bagaimana, and kapan, and how they are expressed in English, it is found that not all these Indonesian question words can be directly and translated into what, who, how many/much, where and when. These differences will hopefully enhanche awareness of all language learners about the individualities or peculiarities owned by any language to ease their learning processes.

Abstract

Impoliteness in digital communication often manifests through provocative remarks and direct attacks, particularly in political contexts. This study investigates impoliteness in the comment sections of Donald Trump’s Instagram videos, focusing on the ways global audiences respond to his posts. The research aims to identify the types and functions of impoliteness expressed by users. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes comments collected from one of Trump’s Instagram videos using documentation and note-taking techniques. The data were examined through Culpeper’s theory of impoliteness, which categorizes strategies based on their forms and functions. The findings reveal four types of impoliteness strategies: bald-on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and sarcasm or mock politeness. Notably, no evidence was found for the strategy of withholding politeness, which is typically observed in face-to-face communication but is less detectable in asynchronous platforms such as Instagram. In terms of functions, the analysis identified three distinct forms: affective impoliteness, coercive impoliteness, and entertaining impoliteness. This study demonstrates that impoliteness on social media is not merely a reflection of hostility but can also serve expressive, persuasive, and entertaining purposes. The findings highlight how global audiences employ impolite strategies to convey emotions, influence discourse, and engage with political figures. By situating impoliteness within digital political communication, this research contributes to the broader understanding of language use in online interaction and its impact on public perception of political leaders

Abstract

Plant naming in Javanese culture is not merely descriptive but is laden with metaphorical meaning that reflects cultural values and collective cognition. This study aims to uncover the cognitive processes behind the use of metaphors in the names of banana varieties (gêdhang) in the Javanese language. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, with data collected through documentation of the Javanese dictionary, observation, and interviews with local informants. Data analysis was conducted using a referential approach and a reflective-introspective method to identify the source domains, target domains, and conceptual structure of the metaphors. The results show that the metaphors in banana names take the form of idiomatic phrases, with loci based on construction attributes. Source domains include place, beauty, small things, position, and spirit beings, while target domains involve flavor, color, texture, seeds, and the number of fruits. The discussion highlights how language reflects local wisdom and cultural values, and how metaphors function conceptually in organizing human experiences. This study enriches conceptual metaphor theory and opens avenues for further exploration in other ethnobotanical lexicons.
