Abstract

Exposure to acute ultraviolet B (UVB) damages the skin through oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. UVB increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cells and trigger inflammation by increasing TNF-α levels. Increased ROS and TNF-α levels activate caspase-3, which causes cellular apoptosis. This damage worsens skin conditions, triggers premature aging (photoaging), and increases the risk of skin cancer. In Indonesia, approximately 57,3% of the population is exposed to sunlight, with a prevalence of dry skin ranging from 50% to 80%, while photoaging contributes to approximately 80% of the adverse effects of skin aging. Clitoria ternatea contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that have the potential to suppress caspase-3 activation and prevent cell damage. This experimental study used a post-test-only control group design with a completely randomized design, involving male Wistar rats divided into four treatment groups (K1–K4). The study was conducted at the Chemistry Laboratory of IBL UNISSULA, with animal treatment at the Animal Experiment Laboratory of IBL UNISSULA and skin tissue sample analysis at the General Medical Laboratory of CITO Yogyakarta from December 2024 to February 2025. Clitoria ternatea extract gel was applied topically once a day for 7 days, followed by UVB exposure (160 mJ/cm²) for ±15 min per day. Skin tissue samples were collected 24 h after the last treatment with a 6 mm punch biopsy, and the expression of TNF-α and caspase-3 was analyzed using qRT-PCR. Data were tested using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results, the group given a 5% dose of gel (K3) showed a significant decrease in the expression of TNF-α (0,35±0,20) and caspase-3 (0,16±0,32) compared to other groups, while the 10% dose (K4) showed no significant difference. The conclusion, Clitoria ternatea extract gel at a 5% dose effectively reduced the expression of TNF-α and caspase-3 in the skin of UVB-exposed mice.

Abstract

Soy milk contains isoflavones which are natural estrogens from plants. The content of isoflavones in soy milk influence for endocrine hormone system disruption due to excessive absorption of phytoestrogens, which is feared to affect the development of reproductive organs. This study aims to determine whether the dose and duration of awarding of soy milk affect the level of estradiol. The research design used was experimental with a post test only control group design, which conducted for one month at 24 strains of female mice balb / C, divided into 6 groups namely two control groups and four treatment groups (with 15 and 30 days observation period). The control group was given a non-soybean diet (pellet feed), the treatment group was given soy milk (doses 0.325 and 0.65 mL each mice). Analyzed of data by one way ANOVA test, post-hoc LSD. One Way Anova test earned p value <0.05, this indicates a significant difference in estradiol levels. There is influence of the dosage of awarding of soy milk on the estradiol level of mice.

Abstract

Abstract

Currently, in the era of the covid-19 pandemic, to prevent the spreading of SARS-CORV2 infection, the public is advised to comply with health protocols and maintain stamina and immunity. Our community service activity (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat/ PkM) was conducted to increase public knowledge, especially housewives to comply with health protocols and utilize traditional medicinal plants such as ginger, turmeric, and garlic to increase stamina and immunity. The knowledge improvement was evaluated by comparing the pre-test and post-test result using a questionnaire. Data was collected from 38 participants out of 50 participants who fulfilled the questioners. The T-paired test showed that the participant knowledge on covid-19 protocol and natural products for immune system was increased significantly (p<0.05). A 65.8% of participants understands the efforts to prevent the transmission of covid-19 “Protocol 5M” namely Wearing Masks, Washing Hands with Soap, Keeping Distance, Preventing Crowds, and Restricting Mobility. The awareness of participants on the benefit of herbal product to improve stamina and immunity was also improved. A training or workshop for participants in preparing healthy and safe food to avoid side effects can be considered for the next PkM activities.
