Abstract

This paper aimed to report the data analysis of teaching English as a foreign language in 7th semester students of Muhammadiyah University Tangerang. This paper can be given understanding about how does a Poetry can be used as a media in teaching English for students in University. The data analysis in this paper use qualitative descriptive, because this technique embedded the students understanding of poetry and EFL gather. Through this paper can be known that teaching EFL can implement through Understanding Poem, where the poem is consist of complex words which has intensely meaning than does ordinary language. This paper will report the data how a poem can use as a unique media and able to give understanding in teaching Indonesian students university.

Abstract

AbstrakKajian tentang ingatan budaya menekankan bahwa ingatan kita ternyata sangat selektif. Ingatan budaya dapat dikomunikasikan melalui media tertentu. Media-media tersebut dapat berupa bentuk budaya material yang paling dasar misalnya pidato lisan, cerita kakek tentang masa lalu, dan dapat pula berupa budaya material yang biasanya memiliki wujud dan beroperasi melalui sistem simbolik seperti monumen, foto sejarah, lukisan, film dokumenter, novel historis, dan bangunan-bangunan sejarah. Dengan demikian, karya sastra dapat ditempatkan sebagai salah satu budaya material. Mengingat eratnya keterkaitan ingatan budaya dengan budaya material, tulisan ini berupaya mengungkap bagaimana budaya material dan pembentukan ingatan budaya dapat menjadi kajian yang menarik dalam penelitian sastra. Tulisan ini mengungkap bagaimana representasi ingatan budaya tokoh pahlawan nasional di dalam berbagai budaya material, termasuk karya sastra. Representasi ini terkait dengan identitas budaya tokoh pahlawan nasional tersebut yang menjadi bagian dari ingatan budaya masyarakat Indonesia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapatnya perbedaan yang cukup siginfikan dalam representasi tokoh pahlawan nasional dalam masing-masing budaya material, terkait identitas budaya yang dihadirkan. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa ‘cara mengingat’ mempengaruhi pembentukan budaya material termasuk karya sastra dan identitas budaya terhadap tokoh pahlawan nasional yang pernah hidup di suatu masa.Kata kunci: budaya material, ingatan budaya, penelitian sastra sejarah, konstruksi identitas AbstractThe focus of cultural memory studies emphasizes on our selective memory. Cultural memory would be communicated by certain media. These media can These media can be the most basic forms of material culture such as oral speech, grandfather's story about the past, and can also be a material culture that usually has a form and operates through a symbolic system such as monuments, historical photographs, paintings, documentaries, historical novels, and historical buildings. Thus, literary works can be placed as one of material culture. Considering the close relationship between cultural memories and material culture, this paper seeks to reveal how material culture and the formation of cultural memories can be interesting studies in literary research. This paper will reveal how the cultural memory representation of national hero figures in various material cultures, including literary works. This representation is related to the cultural identity of the national hero who takes part of the cultural memories of the Indonesian people. The results showed that there were significant differences in the representation of national hero figures in each material culture, related to the cultural identity presented. Thus, it can be concluded that the 'way of remembering' influences the formation of material culture including literary works and cultural identity of national hero figures who have lived at a time.Keywords: material culture, cultural memory, the research of historical literature, identity construction

Abstract

This articles revisits Michel Foucault and Judith Butler’s work on the gender and sexuality by examining contemporary cultural spectacles of heterosexual men, exemplified in the movie Captain America Trilogy. We will re-evaluate the queerness based on Foucault’s Sexual Discourse by thinking about the intersections between queer heroes and queer soldier. Result Show that struggle queer individuals endure with heteronormative standard culture forces them to change standard culture things and forms to create them applicable. Captain America shut relationship with Bucky provides for a queer reading and therefore the history of Captain America among the relative queer freedom caused by socio-historic conditions of war II find this queer reading during a larger queer history. And by claiming Steve Rogersand Bucky as their own queer people create space to express their identities and reaffirm the place of heroic queer people in Americanhistory which, as the descendants of that patriotic past, merits them a place within that history and within modern Americansociety.Keywords: Gender in American Society, queer heroes, gender identities

Abstract

The world assumes that someone who has emotions is someone who will harm themselves and those around them. Emotions that are considered as a disease called S.O.S. (switched of the syndrome). This research aims to analyze a film entitled Equals  (2015) that depicts a world with high technological advances and humans who do not have emotions. We will use the descriptive analysis method with Freud's psychoanalysis approach to analyze "Silas" as the main character who suddenly has an emotional feelings are forced to be hidden from the people around him including the woman he likes.There are three psychological structure of a person found in the psychology of literature that According to Sigmund Freud, namely the id, ego, and superego. The end result of this research we will see how Silas hides his feelings and find a solution about the situation. The story of Silas shows us about the emotional disease change his life in the future.

Abstract

Abstract The issue of women's discrimination in the Middle East has become common knowledge. Injustice treatment of women in Middle Eastern countries occurs because of the patriarchal culture that still surrounds by most of society. The problem has been raised in various media, one of which is literary media. Through the novel entitled Women at PointZero by Nawal El Saadawi raises the reality of women discrimination experienced by most Middle Eastern women, especially in Egypt. Therefore, this research seeks to reveal the issue of discrimination of women raised by authors in the novel. Descriptive research method of analysis by using the approach Pierre Bourdieu related habitus, arena, capital and social practices used to reveal the factors that cause discrimination against female character in the novel. The end result of the study shows the social practice of Firdaus in countering the discrimination of women in Egypt against male patriarchal dominance in social space of society. Key words: Discrimination of women in Egypt, habitus, arena, capital, social practice

Abstract

ABSTRACTLearning language will also relate to speech act. When a speaker produce an utterance as well as utilize it to perform an action, it means that the speaker practices speech acts. In another hand, speech acts can be defined as an utterance used by speaker to perform an action. Speech acts are divided into three such as locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. One of them is illocutionary act. The illocutionary act refers to what someone does in saying something. In this act, illocutionary force is the speaker’s intent addressed to hearer. This research is aimed to find the types of illocutionary acts and identifying about how utterances in the Donald Trump’s speeches are able to be included into certain type of illocutionary acts be based on Searle’s theory. This research is designed in descriptive qualitative. The data is collected by documentation. The primary data are taken from two transcripts of Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy speeches. While the secondary data are related theories obtained from literary books and journals. The procedure of analyzing the data starts by finding out the types of illocutionary acts in the Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy speeches by using the illocutionary acts’ classifications proposed by Searle (1969). After that, the researcher also identifies about the different frequency of illocutionary acts appearances and the dominant illoctionary acts appeared in the Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy speeches. The finding shows that the type of illocutionary acts found in the Donald Trump’s speeches were assertive, commissive, expressive, and directive. Eventhough the types of illocutionary acts found in Donald Trump’s speeches were exactly the same, but they were different in the frequency of appearance. Donald Trump produced mostly assertive type of illocutionary acts and also asserting category of illocutionary type in both of the speeches. Moreover, some utterances are included into assertive type of illocutionary acts due to the fact that they have a suitability with the explanation of assertive type of illocutionary acts proposed by Searle.Keywords: Illocutionary Acts, Speech Acts, Presidential Candidacy Speeches.

Abstract

Abstract This article aims to reveal the deconstruction meaning of the ideal women concept in film Pengabdi Setan through the characters of Mother and Grandmother. Jacques Derrida's concept is used in this study to see how text can be interpreted not only in a single meaning but also another meaning, as a main characteristic of deconstruction is to reveal the meanings that are marginalized, ignored, and hidden. We use deconstruction reading methodology to reveal the hidden meanings in the film Pengabdi Setan (2017). By deconstructing a concept of women which presented by mother and grandmother figures, we found several results were obtained such as the concept of ideal women that admitted in our society still shackles women so that if a woman does not conform to the ideal concept prevailing in society, then what will happen is a catastrophe. In Indonesian society which is still strongly conduct to patriarchal values, women are often alienated and negatively stigmatized if they cannot bear children. Reproductive tasks that are carried out by women are shown and regulated according to the wishes of society, for example when she should get pregnant and how many children will be conceived and born. The mother has to take care of her husband, children, and household. Society has constructed women as ideal figures who serve their husbands and work fully in the domestic area, such as taking care of kitchens, wells, and mattresses. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap pemaknaan dekonstruksi konsep perempuan ideal dalam film Pengabdi Setan melalui tokoh ibu dan nenek. Konsep Jacques Derrida digunakan dalam penelitian ini untuk melihat bagaimana teks mampu dimaknai tidak hanya dalam pemaknaan tunggal karena inti dari dekonstruksi adalah menyingkap makna-makna yang dipinggirkan, diabaikan, dan disembunyikan. Penulis menggunakan metodologi pembacaan dekonstruksi untuk menyingkap makna yang tersembunyi dalam film Pengabdi Setan (2017). Dengan mendekonstruksi konsep perempuan yang dihadirkan melalui tokoh ibu dan nenek, didapat beberapa hasil penelitian, di antaranya konsep perempuan ideal yang berkembang di masyarakat masih membelenggu perempuan sehingga jika perempuan tidak sesuai dengan konsep ideal yang berlaku di masyarakat, yang terjadi adalah malapetaka. Dalam masyarakat Indonesia yang masih sarat dengan nilai patriarki, perempuan sering diasingkan dan distigmakan negatif jika ia tidak dapat melahirkan anak. Tugas reproduksi yang dijalankan perempuan diperlihatkan dan diatur sesuai dengan kehendak masyarakat, misalnya kapan ia harus hamil dan berapa banyak anak yang akan dikandung dan dilahirkan. Ibu harus mengurus suami, anak-anak, dan rumah tangganya. Masyarakat telah mengkonstruksi perempuan sebagai sosok yang ideal, yang mengabdi pada suami dan bekerja sepenuhnya di wilayah domestik, seperti mengurus dapur, sumur, dan kasur.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the shifts that appear in two texts, films and novels. The two texts are the FilmHujan Bulan Juniwhich is a movie adaptation from the novel of the same title written by Sapardi Djoko Damono. This study begins by comparing the differences and similarities between the two texts. This analysis focuses on the narrative aspects of novels and films as part of literature. As part of the study of film literature that focuses on the issue of adaptation from one medium to another, this research examines the confluence and differences of two media forms - textual and visual. The selection of narrative elements used by the film director to be transferred and which other visual methods and formats are used will also be examined. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant difference between the source text (novel) and the transfer of the film. These differences are related to the narrative structure, the role and perspective of the narrator and ideological understanding related to the theme of cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the inner conflict of the main character in the movie entitled The Aviator. The Aviator takes the life story of world aviation named Howard Hughes. Howard Hughes is a young millionaire, entrepreneur, and also a movie director. He succeed seize his ambition at 24 years old. Freud's psychoanalysis approach used in analyzing the main characters is experiencing growth or personality changes dynamically. Changes and developments in the main characters' personalities due to their inner conflicts are complicated. The main character is kept up haunted by inner conflict, anxiety, and helplessness facing reality outside itself. Inner conflicts triggered by the sequences of events in the past, directly and indirectly influence or change the personality of the character. The inner conflict was traced and understood by using the theory of Freud's psychoanalysis.

Abstract

This study discusses the Politeness Strategy used by Vladimir Putin in his speech on The Reason Why Russia Attacked Ukraine. The purpose of the study is to comprehend what kind of Politeness Strategy Theory used by Vladimir Putin, how positive and negative facial responses are, and what the message is conveyed in his Speech. The qualitative research was applied in this research. The data analysis was shaped into the table by grouping the Politeness Strategy Theory after that the data was analyzed to answer the research problem. From this study, the researcher found out that there are 27 utterances that are included in the Politeness Strategy. The results of this study show that Vladimir Putin threats more Positive Face than Negative face. This result shows that there are main strategies used by Vladimir Putin in his speech, are: (7 utterances of Bald on Record), (9 utterances of Positive Politeness), (8 utterances of Negative Politeness), and (3 utterances of Off-Record). The results show that the positive Politeness Strategy was frequently used in this study because he wanted to make a good relationship with all the audiences in order to minimize the social distance between them.
