Abstract

The mapping of political affiliation is important to capture the power direction and its characteristics in the future. Generally, the mass political orientation in Indonesia is not much different than what was outlined by Clifford Geertz in his master piece entitled The Religion of Java. The concept of 'trikotomi' consisting of the Santri, Abangan, and Priyayi, which over the past five decades has been the fundamentally critiqued by various parties. Numerous weak points and fallacy of conceptual framwork then become the entrance to reconceptualize the Indonesian people political orientation. However, the work of Geertz's initial approach should be appreciated as a brilliant in understanding the Indonesian political behavior. With the critical approaches, the Geertz's approaches will again be utilized to mapthe direction of community in the contemporary Indonesian political orientation.

Abstract

The interpretation dynamics of Al-Quran was so intensive in Surakartawithin 1900-1930. By comparative analysis this paper studies and finds three works oftafsir (interpretation, exclamation passage of al-Qu’ran by supplying additionalinformation) that were published in Surakarta but they had different concern. Tafsîral-Quran al-‘A“îm analyzed Islamic orthodox theme as the central issue in itsinterpretation. This can be understood because the work was written by a Great SurakartaPalace village leader who splashed around Islamic laws. While Tafsir Surat Wal-Asridiscussed the relation between Islam and Christianity as the central issue. The writer ofthis book was worried about the activity of the evangelism in the Surakarta Palaceterritory. Tafsir Qur’an Djawen stressed on the importance of the fraternity as thecentral issue in its interpretation. The book talked about the disunity phenomena amongMuslim community because of the difference in the furu’iyah cases.Key Words: interpretation dynamics, al-Quran, SurakartaDinamika penafsiran al-Quran begitu intens di Surakarta dalam rentangwaktu antara 1900-1930. Abstract

The trend of religious conservatism in Indonesian public sector is increasing nowadays. But the trend is not followed by the rise of political Islam‟s popularity. The Islamic political parties are precisely abandoned by their sympathizers because of some reasons. This paper tries to elaborate the reasons causing the erosion of Islamic parties‟ political legitimacy. Some fundamental problems such as inability to transform ideology into political platform, internal-factionalism, as well as the crisis of identity will be explained further. The experience from 2009 election can be used to revitalize their power and capacity for the better electability in the next 2014 election. But they seem to be unable to deal with the previous problems making the electability erosion in 2014 more potential and inevitable. Various strategies must be conducted by the parties such as consolidation, revitalizing their political communication strategy, widening political networks across various ideological and religious streams, and others. Without that, their existence would be subordinated by the secular parties to become the second class political players in this biggest Moslem country in the world.

Abstract

Akhlak (morals) is a very important part in human life, without which men will not reach the degree of a noble man. On contrary, human beings having good akhlak can distinguish between good and bad deeds to become a noble man. The issue of morality is currently experiencing acute decadence that must be quickly overcome by various circles. One of the ways is through learning the thinking of earlier muslims scholars. One of the earlier Islamic scholars is Syaikh Abdul Latief Syakur, one of the local ulamas in Minangkabau, whose academic background had a direct contact with the dynamics of Middle Eastern scholarship, and who contributed a lot of thoughts to uplift the dignity of the nation through morals. As a scholar, Syaikh Abdul Latief Syakur presented and describedseveral moral values to overcome the present moral decadence through his thoughts set forth in his work Tafsīr Surah al-Mukminūn. The application of moral values in this tafsir work contributes to the present moment by applying the values of the spirit of khusyu and khuḍhu’ which illustrates the humility and tepo seliro (tolerance) which are transcendent. Not only on its transcendent and cognitive aspects, but also on the other dimensions of humanity thoroughly and striving in winning nature (fitrah) and logics against lust.[Akhlak merupakan bagian yang sangat penting dalam kehidupan manusia.

Abstract

This study examines the insertion of Biblical sources as references in Tafsir Soerat Wal-’Asri by Siti Chayati, a Javanese Quranic exegete who interprets chapter 103 (al-Asr) of the Quran in Javanese using Javanese Script. The Chayati’s work using some Biblical verses of Barnabas, Matthew, and John as its references, is unique and thought-provoking to understand the motives and its historical background. This study finds that the use of Bible verses in her work was aimed to strengthen her claims on the truth of Islamic teachings against the missionary activities of the Dutch in Java. At the beginning of the 20th century, they attempted to weaken the Islamic community by conducting the Zending movement and establishing Seminary Christian Schools in several regencies in Java. Therefore, debates on religious concepts had become a central issue to win the heart of the traditional Javanese society. The tensions between Christian missionaries and Muslim preachers in that era turned out to be significant factors influencing the insertion of Biblical references in the work of Chayati’s Quranic exegesis.

Abstract

The study focuses on changes in the religious interpretation of the Muhammadiyah, an Islamic mass organization in Indonesia, which initially sought to clear Islam from local religious traditions but then began to accept the tradition. This research is qualitative research, with documented methods and in-depth interviews, to explore to what extent these changes and the factors affecting them. The study reveals that Muhammadiyah began tolerating local religious traditions and emphasized the need to redefine religious purification. Factors such as less popular da’wah strategies in rural areas, and the emergence of young Muhammadiyah groups supporting liberalism and moderation, have influenced this shift. This study is important to advance scientific traditions, especially in relation to Muhammadiyah, and to make constructive contributions to formulating organizational policies in connection with local religious traditions.

Abstract

Conventional interpretation of the Quran often leads to the understanding that the verses are gender biased. This study is intended to discuss the mubādalah approach used by Kongres Ulama Perempuan Indonesia (KUPI) in interpreting the verses of the Qur’an that are considered gender bias. The question is how the Qur’an can be interpreted and how it can be explained. This study is a library study, focusing entirely on the existing library data. The study uses descriptive analysis with a hermeneutic approach, a tafsir analysis that considers the context of interpretation. This study concluded that the mubādalah approach that becomes the “official approach” of KUPI is relevant for interpreting gender biased-verses of the Qur’an. It is because the traditional and conventional interpretation makes it as if the verses of the Qur’an subordinate women, maltreating women in their relationship with men. Interpretation of the Quranic verses considered gender biased with the mubādalah approach in the context of the KUPI struggle is an appropriate advocative interpretation model for the improvement and fairness of gender relations.

Abstract

This study discusses the story of the death of Prophet Isa in Tafsīr al-Manār by Muḥammad ‘Abduh and Muḥammad Rashid Rida. Most commentators interpret QS. Ali ‘Imrān: 55 and QS. al-Nisā’: 157-158 by stating that Isa is still alive today. Allah saved Isa from assassination and crucifixion attempts by his enemies by lifting him up to the sky. One day Prophet Isa will come back down to earth before the end of the world to kill the Dajjal who committed destruction and apostasy on earth. This study is a literature review because it relies entirely on literature data from tafsir books, books, and journals, both print and online. Descriptive analysis was used in this study by including a hermeneutic approach that looked at the triadic relationship between text, interpretation, and context of interpretation. This research found that in the Tafsīr al-Manār it was mentioned that the Prophet Isa had died a natural death. Prophet Isa was indeed saved by Allah but not by lifting him to heaven. Ordinary methods protected him, finally died naturally, and was placed in a glorious place in the sight of Allah. Muḥammad ‘Abduh and Rashid Rida argue that there is not a single Qur’anic verse that states that Isa is still alive. Thus, the sentences in the Qur’an state that Isa has died. The hadith that explains the appointment of Prophet Isa is also the ḥadīth āḥād that cannot be used as a postulate for matters concerning faith or i’tiqād. This finding has implications for the understanding that the Prophet will not return to earth before the world’s end.
