Abstract

Livelihood systems of nomadic duck herders make a unique study subject due to the livelihood assets, strategies, and outcomes they manage, which involve interactions with various actors that keep moving around. Social capital the duck herders build in their interaction with other actors, namely rice farmers, play an important role to face different vulnerability context, including those brought by the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to characterize components of bonding, bridging and linking social capital in the context of relationships between duck herders and other actors, and seeks to find the essential role of the combination of the three types of social capital for livelihood outcomes, particularly in facing vulnerabilities due to the pandemic. The method of grounded theory research was applied for its ability to allow researchers to reveal processual relationships between duck herders and other actors. Data were collected through semi structured interviews, analyzed by open, axial, and selective coding. The duck herders combine components of bonding, bridging, and linking social capital selectively depending on the interests behind each interaction with different actors. The bridging and linking role that social capital plays in herders’ interactions with farmers and irrigation officials is undertaken in order to gain access to natural capital (rice fields and irrigated water), while in their interaction with egg traders, they utilize bridging social capital to gain access to financial capital (in the form of cash and loans). The vulnerability context due to the pandemic has shaken the livelihood system of the duck herders by upsetting the egg supply chain due to social restriction policies. Social capital therefore plays an important role in facing vulnerability, in the context of forming good will among egg traders that continued to buy eggs from the duck herders, which served as a kind of pay back for the loyalty of the duck herders. We find that social capital plays a vital role in a livelihood system, within which the access to livelihood assets depend on social relations. This study also explored the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic as it resonates more on supply chains than production processes.

Abstract

Abstract

The low income of duck farmers in Sidrap Regency is caused by a lack of knowledge about business management and limited types of products produced. This community service activity aims to improve the skills of farmers through business management counseling and livestock product processing training. The methods used are group counseling and direct practice training in making processed duck egg products, namely salted eggs with pandan flavor variants. The results show a significant increase in farmers' knowledge about good business management, strengthening duck farmer group institutions, digital marketing and duck egg processing techniques, namely salted duck eggs with pandan flavor variants. In addition, new processed products have emerged that are diversified and have added value. Thus, farmers become more independent, competitive, and able to increase family income. This activity makes a positive contribution to the development of the duck farming sector in Sidrap Regency.

Abstract

This study investigated community perceptions towards the presence of a layer chicken farm in Sumarambu Subdistrict, Telluwanua District, Palopo City, Indonesia. A descriptive quantitative survey was conducted on 40 households within a 500-meter radius of the farm, categorized into three zones based on proximity. Perceptions were measured across environmental, economic, and social aspects using a Likert scale. The results showed that the community agreed the farm had negative environmental impacts, such as strong odour and poor waste management, with perceptions varying significantly by proximity. From an economic perspective, residents noted advantages, including reduced egg prices and increased consumption. Nonetheless, perceptions were consistent across different areas, suggesting that the farm acts as an economic enclave with minimal integration into the broader community. From a social perspective, the community demonstrated differing opinions regarding the positive impacts on employment, social assistance, and compensation, with no significant spatial variations. This highlights a lack of social responsibility initiatives. The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed substantial differences in environmental perceptions among zones for odour and waste, but not for water pollution and cleanliness. No significant zonal differences were found for economic and social aspects. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding and integrating community perceptions into sustainable livestock development to ensure alignment with local needs, values, and expectations.
