Abstract

The rise of hoaxes circulating on social media makes students as active social media users vulnerable to distribute hoaxes. The study used the model of information behavior by Wilson (1996) to examine information behaviors of university students in combating hoaxes on social media. Using a qualitative method, data collection was conducted through focus groups discussions with 14 students of Syiah Kuala University. The results showed that the information behaviors performed by the university students were not adequate to combat hoaxes. The critical attitude by not easily trusting information on social media was not accompanied by sufficient will and abilities to verify information they received from social media. Information dissemination behavior without verification was also found in this study. The results of this study also indicated that passive attention and search were the most dominant information behaviors among students. The results also showed that low self-efficacy encourage students to be reluctant and difficult to conduct information searches for verification. This study suggested that the model of information behaviour by Wilson (1996) was relevant to discuss students’ information behavior to combat hoaxes on social media. These findings are important to develop a social media literacy model for university students to fight against hoaxes on social media.

Abstract

According to national data from the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), approximately 71.3% of school-aged children in Indonesia own personal digital devices and use them for extended periods, including for non-educational purposes. In addition, 79% of children reportedly lack mutually agreed-upon rules for gadget use at home. These national trends highlight the importance of strengthening parental mediation in children’s digital activities. This issue is particularly salient in Aceh, a region with a high prevalence of misinformation, reflecting low digital literacy that affects parents’ ability to manage children’s online activities. This study aims to identify parental mediation strategies used for children aged 6–12 years, analyze factors influencing strategy selection, and explore challenges faced in digital parenting. A qualitative approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews with 15 parents of elementary school children in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar who used digital devices. Restrictive mediation, involving rules on screen time and digital content, emerged as the most dominant strategy, followed by supervision through monitoring children’s digital activities and active mediation through discussion and explanation. Co-use, in which parents and children used digital media together, was less common. Moreover, technical mediation, involving parental control features and digital monitoring tools, was the least utilized strategy and was primarily adopted by parents with higher levels of digital literacy. The findings highlight the critical role of parental digital literacy in enhancing effective mediation strategies, contributing both theoretically to parental mediation studies and practically to digital parenting programs.

The data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation on the informants' Instagram. Ten students from Syiah Kuala University were interviewed. Their addiction was observed from the intensity of Instagram usage. The study showed that there is a correlation between Instagram addiction and selfie. Addicted Instagram users are obsessed with selfie as they believe that selfie photos are the best way to get likes and increase the number of followers. Their addiction to Instagram incites their obsession to gain popularity in the virtual space using selfie photos. Abstract

The 2022 report from the Indonesia Central Securities Depository (KSEI) indicates that although the stock price index declined, the number of capital market investors, particularly from Generation Z, experienced significant growth. This trend is driven by the development of financial technology (fintech), which facilitates easier access to investments for younger generations. One prominent fintech platform is Bibit, which became the most popular mutual fund investment application in Indonesia in 2021. Generation Z, aged 19–25, is highly active on social media, including TikTok, which Bibit utilizes as a primary marketing platform. This study aims to analyze the influence of Bibit’s advertising exposure on TikTok on Generation Z’s investment interest in Banda Aceh. The AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action) model is used as the analytical framework. This study employs an explanatory quantitative approach using a survey method, distributing online questionnaires. The research sample consists of 100 respondents selected through accidental sampling based on the Slovin formula. Data analysis is conducted using simple linear regression and t-tests. The results indicate that the t-value is greater than the t-table value (5.404 > 1.660), with a coefficient of determination of 0.230, meaning that Bibit’s advertising exposure on TikTok contributes 23% to investment interest. Thus, it can be concluded that Bibit’s advertising exposure on TikTok has a positive and significant influence on Generation Z’s investment interest in Banda Aceh.

Abstract

Atariki Japan is a local culinary brand offering ramen and Japanese cuisine with flavors adapted to the preferences of the Acehnese community. Amid increasing culinary competition, Atariki Japan utilizes social media as a strategic communication platform to build relationships with customers and strengthen brand loyalty. This study aims to examine how Atariki Japan implements digital strategic communication through social media, how these strategies contribute to brand–customer relationships, and how these relationships influence customer loyalty. This study employs a qualitative case study approach using Relationship Management Theory. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five informants, consisting of Atariki Japan’s chief marketing officer, content creator, and three customers, supported by social media documentation analysis. The findings reveal that Atariki Japan implements digital strategic communication through four strategies: content creation, content sharing, connecting, and community building. These strategies enable Atariki to establish interactive communication, develop emotional connections, and foster a sense of belonging among customers. Furthermore, brand relationships developed through social media contribute to customer loyalty, reflected in customer trust, emotional attachment, continued preference, repeat visits, and recommendations to others. This study concludes that social media functions as a strategic platform for managing sustainable brand–customer relationships.

Abstract

Facebook has experienced a shift in usage among Generation Z. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study aims to explain how attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control influence Generation Z's discontinuance of Facebook use. Data were collected through structured interviews with 15 undergraduate students at Universitas Syiah Kuala who had previously used Facebook actively. The findings reveal that attitudes toward Facebook and subjective norms are the primary factors driving informants to leave the platform. Negative attitudes emerge from concerns over the widespread circulation of hoaxes and the perception that Facebook is dominated by older users with lower levels of media literacy. Subjective norms further reinforce this discontinuance, as peer migration to alternative social media platforms shapes individual decisions. While perceived behavioral control plays a less dominant role, it still contributes to discontinuance, particularly among users who feel limited in navigating Facebook’s features and verifying information accuracy. These results highlight important implications for understanding the evolving dynamics of social media use and suggest that changing social environments and peer influence significantly shape platform abandonment among younger audiences. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that discontinuance of Facebook use is primarily socially and attitudinally driven rather than technologically constrained.
