Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out 1) The types of sarcasm in TV Series Friends, and 2) The purpose of sarcasm in TV Series Friends. The data were analyzed in descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research were from the utterance of Friends’ cast or character. The data were taken from all the words, phrases, clauses, sentences in Friends transcript which available on the internet. The result of this research showed that 1) there were four types of sarcasm are used by Friends’ character, namely: like-prefixed sarcasm with a total number 9 utterances (21.4%), lexical sarcasm with a total number 11 utterances (26.2%), propositional sarcasm with total 16 utterances (38.1%), and illocutionary 6 utterances (14.3%). 2) There were five purposes of sarcasm are used by Friends’ character, namely: sophistication with a total number 19 utterances (45.2%), evaluation with a total number 5 utterances (11.9%), tool for politeness with a total 5 utterances (11.9%), the persuasive aspect with a total number 7 utterances (16.7%), retract ability with a total 1 utterance (2.4%) and group affiliation with a total number 5 utterances (11.9%).

Abstract

The study dealed with the maincharacter’s conflicts and defensemechanisms found in a novel “TentangKamu” written by Tere Liye. The objectivesof this study were to find out the types ofconflict of the main character and thedefense mechanism that is reflected insolving the problem. The sources of thedata were taken from the novel “TentangKamu” By Tere Liye. This was anobservation study because this studyfocused on the analysis of spoken languagein the novel. The collected data wereidentified, divided, and analyzed based onliterature and psychology perspectives ofIslam’s (2016) theory and defensemechanisms by Cramer (2006). Thefindings show that Sri Ningsih, as the maincharacter, faces the external conflict whichis described as person vs nature whereasthe internal conflicts is person vs himselfwhich describes the features of sadness,anger, betrayal, anxiety, love and regret asexperienced by the main character. Theconflict between person vs. herself(internal conflict) becomes the mostcommon conflict faced by the maincharacter then it was followed with thedefense mechanism of denial andidentification.

Abstract

The focus of this study was to analyze the types of imagery that represented unrequited love in the five selected song lyrics based on Billie Eilish’s life background. The five selected songs were “Wish you were gay,” “8”, “Hostage,” “My boy,” and “Your Power.” This study applied the theory imagery of Perrine’s theory and Kennedy and Gioia’s biographical approach. The qualitative content analysis was employed as the method in this study. The data were the five selected song lyrics and the life background of Billie Eilish. The source of data taken from transcript lyrics and the interviews also documentary of Billie Eilish. The researcher found there were five types of imagery found in the song lyrics. They were visual imagery (15), auditory imagery (2), tactile imagery (1), kinesthetic imagery (7), and organic imagery (8). Billie Eilish experienced three categories of unrequited love: crush on someone who is unavailable, pursuing the love object, and unequal love relationship portrayed in the five selected songs. Billie Eilish’s life background greatly influenced her song lyrics, starting with her depression and suicidal thought, her unique fashion style, and herself as a drug-free teenager.

Abstract

The study deals with Translation Shift in Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World. The objectives of the study were to find out the types of category shift that found in Sophie’s world. It also aims to describe the translation shift that affects the reader perception in the novel of Sophie’s world. The research method of this study used qualitative research. The sources data from both novel of source language and target language in Sophie’s World novel and also interviewed five informants who known about translation shift. The data were analyzed by using Catford’s theory. The findings of the study show that there were 4 types of category shift. Each types of category shift namely: (1) structure shift, (2) class shift, (3) unit shift, (4) intra system shift. Those category shifts occur because the grammatical systems of the Source Language and Target Language are different, that is why the translator is dictated by the target language. It also affects reader reception that cost of lack understanding base on expressing the real meaning.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out what, how, and why the translation methods became the most dominant in translating English Hymn song in kidung jemaat. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data of this study were 22 songs lyrics by E.L.Pohan. The source of the data was taken from kidung jemaat Hymn song book. The result of this study showed that there are three types of methods used in translating English Hymn song lyrics in to Indonesian language. The most dominant used by the translator is the Adaptation method (68,18%). The adaptation method is the most dominantly used by the translator because it retains the meaning contained in the SL, even though the words are substituted to fit the culture and rythmic calculation of each lyrics word, without altering the original meaning.
