Abstract

This study discusses the strategies that teachers use when learning through online applications. This investigation raises the main problem, namely "what strategy is used by the teacher". The purpose of this study was investigate what types of strategies used by teachers in learning to write through online applications at MTs N 2 Medan. This research was conducted in class eight and nine grade at MTs N 2 Medan. This study used a qualitative descriptive method and collected data through documentation and interviews. The framework proposed by Hamruni (2011). The Analyze data in four steps: 1). Data Collection, 2) Data Condensation, 3) Data Display, 4) Conclusion and Drawing / Verification. Applications carried out by researchers at school use the Whatsapp application. Based on the findings, there are three strategies used by the two teachers when teaching online at MTs N 2 Medan. Namely, direct teaching strategies, cooperative learning strategies and problem-based strategies. Although not very specific, with theory, it can be said that the two teachers used three of the four theories. In addition, the researcher also found that teachers at MTs N 2 Medan taught using descriptive text, where there were 4 types of teaching processes used by teachers through online applications, namely namely, Planning, Drafting, Editing and Final Version for teacher A, and Planning, Compilation, Editing, Final Version.Keywords: Teacher, Strategy, Teaching, Writing, application.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the indices of English summative test as well as describing the test quality based on the 3-PLM of IRT (Item Response Theory). A descriptive-quantitative design is applied by using Rstudio program to analyze the data. The findings show that there are three indices in evaluating English test based on the 3-PLM of IRT, they were item difficulty (b -parameter), item discrimination (a -parameter) and pseudo guessing (c -parameter). As much as 95 % (38 items) are in the good category of difficulty index and 5% (2 items) are in the poor category/very easy items. Then, as much as 30 % (12 items are in the good category and 70 % (28 items) in the poor category of the discrimination power. While referring to the guessing parameter, as much as 90 % (36 items) are in the good category and 10 % (4 items) are in the poor categoryKeywords: Item Analysis, Summative Test, IRT

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to: (1) find out the reading skill workbook used in tenth grade in SMA Swasta Budisatrya Medan, (2) determine the workbook needed by tenth grade students in reading skills, and (3) to develop valid workbooks for use in reading skills according to the needs of tenth grade students. The research was conducted by using the Research and Development method from Borg and Gall, Gall (2003). The research subject was X IPA 1 students of SMA Swasta Budisatrya. The research object is an inquiry based learning workbook. The instrument used was student questionnaire. The data was collected using questionnaires validation sheets. The validator consists of material expert, english teacher practitioner and the one class of tenth grade students. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that: (1) the workbook that used does not support inquiry based learning processes, (2) inquiry-based learning based workbooks are workbooks needed by students, and (3) the developed inquiry based learning workbooks have been valid with a percentage of 91.2% from expert material and 92.8% from the English teacher and this workbook is appropriate with students' needs for reading skills.Keywords: Inquiry Based Learning, Reading, Students’ Workbook

Abstract

This was a conducted Research and development (R & D) study which concerned with the using of appropriate teaching and learning media. The objectives of this study were to find out the existing teaching media used in XI grade students of SMA N 11 Medan and to develop Audio-Visual media by using VideoPad for teaching writing Analytical Exposition Text. The data was gathered in the preliminary data by using interview and questionnaire on XI grade students and the English teacher. Then need analysis was done through questionnaire and interview as well. This research described the existing media available in the school and how it is used in English teaching and learning process that a development should be done. According to the result of the need analysis there were only 18% of the students considered that the teaching and learning process was helpful. It also showed information about students‟ choice of method and media to learning writing. By considering the result of the need analysis, an Audio-Visual media then developed as a teaching and learning aid of writing Analytical Exposition text. The product had later been assessed by two experts to find out the eligibility of the media. Through the experts‟ assessment which was contained of 4 scoring criterias, it was known that the eligibility of the media was “Very Good” based on the scoring criteria.  Keywords: Teaching and Learning Writing, Audio-Visual media, Analytical Exposition, VideoPad.

Abstract

This study aims to : (1) to investigate the application of cognitive levels of bloom taxonomy in reading questions in the worksheet, (2) to investigate the dominant cognitive dimension of Revised Bloom Taxonomy in the worksheet and (3) to write sample reading questions in students’ worksheet. This research was focused on analysing the students’ worksheet which is published by Permata team. The data analysed through data analysis table to categorizing the questions based on theory of Bloom Taxonomy .The finding implies that the number of activities of remembering was the highest percentage in this worksheet, 87.8%.The frequency of remembering is 58 of 66questions. The questions that work on the cognitive level of analyzingrank second with percentage of 6.1%. The third frequency is understanding with 3 question or 4.6 % and the last frequency is creating with 1 question or 1.5 %.The distribution of each category of revised Bloom’s taxonomy within the reading questions is not balanced. Based on the result, the category of remembering that is considered as the lowest level has the highest portion, while the other categories that are categorized as higher level has the low portion. Referring to this findings, the writer tries to develop the reading question in students’ worksheet for grade eight based on Bloom taxonomy to be better by providing some questions that are suitable with low and high order thinking skill.

Abstract

This study was about the use of Edmodo in teaching writing procedue text, to invstigate the problems when using Edmodo in teaching of writing text, and to find out the use of Edmodo and the problems. The participants of this research was English Teacher and Students of XI-TKJ 1 class of SMKN 2 Binjai. The technique of data collection used was observation and interview. The research finding Edmodo media showed that there twelve steps how to use of Edmodo that were used; (1) Teacher Sign Up, (2) Students Sign Up, (3) Basic Posting, (4) Posting Alert, (5)Posting Polls, (6) Working with Assigments, (7) Creating a Quiz, (8) Assigning Quiz, (9) Taking the Quiz, (10) Grades, (11) Calender and Library, (12) and Feeds.  Moreover, here were two problems faced in using Edmodo in teaching writing procedure text; (1)The problems from teachers (2) The problems from studentsKeywords: Edmodo, Writing, Procedue Text.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were: (1) to identify the components of multimodality that are applied in the textbook entitled "Think Globally Act Locally" (2) to describe how the components of multimodality create meaning. This study used descriptive qualitative design. The data in this study are in the form of verbal mode (caption text and instruction text) and image and visual mode (the illustration and the arrangement). The data were collected by analyzing the textbook directly and written down in a notebook. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) there were three components of multimodality in the textbook, namely verbal, image, and visual mode. (2) Each component that appears has a different type but has its own role in creating the same meaning. These components appear simultaneously so that they are in sync with each other. This study found that 76% of the verbal mode is a statement and 24% of the verbal mode is a command. Thus, Statement is the dominant Speech Function. This study also found that the dominant representation is narrative representation with human participants. The dominant interactions in this study are offer in gaze, close shot in size of frame, frontal angle in horizontal angle, and high level in vertical angle. And the dominant compositions in this study are top, center, bottom, and right in information value, placement, color, and sharpness in salience, and framed in framing.

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to develop appropriate reading materials for grade X by using scientific approach as learning material referring to Curriculum 2013. The method used in this research is research and development (R&D). This study is adapted the R&D model proposed by Jolly & Bolitho in Tomlinson (1998). The steps of this study were conducting needs analysis, developing the course grid, developing the first draft of the materials, validating materials, and revising the materials. The subjects of this research were the students of Industrial Electronics Engineering  department grade X of SMKS Nasional Sidikalang and workers of PT. Alam Daya Makmur. Three types of questionnaires were used to collect the data. The first questionnaire was made to obtain the data for the target situation and necessities, the second questionnaire was made to obtain the data for lacks and wants, and the third questionnaire was used to obtain the data about the appropriateness of the materials. The data of all questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics. The average score of the products is 3.58 which is in the range of 3.50<x<4.00 and can be categorized as Very Good.

Abstract

This research focused on the descriptive text teaching teaching teachingtext using the WhatsApp application. This study was limited to the writingof a descriptive text in which the descriptive text was considered for theteacher's education. Limited to the strategies used by a teacher class masterin the seventh grade. The education focus is the descriptive text for theseventh degree of SMP N 3 Medan. The question of this research is one ofthe teachers at high school, in particular the English teacher of the seventhgrade at SMP N 3 Medan. This turned research was qualitative descriptivewith direct observation, interviewed. Data analysis shows that the teacherof SMP N 3 Medan applied two learning strategies by teaching online evenif only a part of the two strategies have been used. The strategies that theteacher used in teaching the descriptive writing used by the teacher weretwo strategies, imaginary strategy and strategy of scaffolding. The purposeof this strategy was to make the material understand the material. Also,when using this strategy, the teacher can get students independently inwriting and increase the students who understood the material. Inscaffolding strategy, the professor trained students to think independently.When you think independently, students could end up at home, studentshave done at home and made a writing description of the product on theirfavorite and then discussed together when the class online process.

Abstract

This study investigates the types of politeness strategy used by the teachers in classrooms interaction and how the politeness strategies were realized in classrooms interaction. The subjects in this study were teachers who used politeness strategies. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected using the following instruments: observation, recording, field notes and interviews. The results of this study reveal that: (1) There are four politeness strategies found during the teaching and learning process used by English teachers, namely: Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness and Off Record. (2) The dominant type used by English teachers at SMA YPK Medan is the Bald on Record Strategy, specifically Bald on Record was used 11 times by 2 English teachers at SMA YPK Medan and for reasons why the politeness strategy is used by the teacher English at SMA YPK Medan during the teaching and learning process illustrates that politeness is the best sentence, soft and polite. And it is very important to apply in the classroom because it will make it easier for teachers to teach students and make them respect each other. Furthermore, this strategy was successfully applied in the classroom during the learning process to get to know the character of students well.
