Abstract

This study deals with the designing of English Speaking Materials By Using Digital Storytelling Project For The Eleventh Grade Students of Senior High School.  The objectives of this study are: (1) to know the English speaking materials needed by grade eleventh students of senior high school, (2) to design appropriate English speaking materials by using digital storytelling project for the eleventh grade students of senior high school. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The research procedures of this study is Research and Development (R&D) through three phases : 1) evaluation and need analysis, 2) course design, and 3) materials validation. The instruments used were questionnaire, interview and documentation sheet. The data from evaluation and need analysis were analyzed by using descriptive technique and the data from expert judgement results were using quantitative data analysis. The result of this study is a course book of speaking materials by using digital storytelling project which consist of title, objective, introduction, observing, practices and reflection. The materials consist of three units, they are What Is Your Opinion, How May I Help You? and You Are Loved. Based on the experts’ judgement result, the score was 3.97 which belongs to good category. Keywords: Digital Storytelling Project, Speaking Materials.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the indices of English summative test as well as describing the test quality based on the 3-PLM of IRT (Item Response Theory). A descriptive-quantitative design is applied by using Rstudio program to analyze the data. The findings show that there are three indices in evaluating English test based on the 3-PLM of IRT, they were item difficulty (b -parameter), item discrimination (a -parameter) and pseudo guessing (c -parameter). As much as 95 % (38 items) are in the good category of difficulty index and 5% (2 items) are in the poor category/very easy items. Then, as much as 30 % (12 items are in the good category and 70 % (28 items) in the poor category of the discrimination power. While referring to the guessing parameter, as much as 90 % (36 items) are in the good category and 10 % (4 items) are in the poor category.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop learning media for teaching writing descriptive text by using Lectora Inspire. This research was conducted by using educational research and development (R&D) proposed by Gall, Gall & Borg method through six phases: gathering data and information, conducting need analysis, designing media, experts validating, revising, and final product. The subjects of this research are 27 students of grade ten of Travel Agency and Tourism program of SMKN 7 Medan which is located in at Jl. STM 12 Sitirejo Medan. The data and data resources were the teacher’s lesson plan, teacher’s interview, and students’ questionnaires result. After getting the last data, the media should be planned to be designed as the students’ needs. The media were developed and had been validated by the experts. The percentage of the media from the experts is 90% that is categorized as very eligible. It can be concluded that interactive learning media is already appropriate to be used as a learning media in teaching writing descriptive text. Keywords: Research and Development (R&D), Learning Media, Descriptive Text, Lectora Inspire, Travel Agency and Tourism program.

Abstract

This research was aimed to analyze errors made by students in translating Indonesian text to English using the classification made by Gentzler. The subject of this research was students who took Translation subject in 2018/2019 academic year in English Education study program in State University of Medan. The instrument of collecting data was a translation test from Indonesian to English consisting of three genres: narrative, descriptive, and analytical exposition. 30 students were divided into 3 groups of 10, each translating different genres. The errors in translations were classified into five types of errors as classified by Gentzler. The result showed that inversion, omission, addition, deviation, and modification errors were found in students’ translations. Deviation and modification errors formed 90% of all errors combined. The errors were caused by interlingual and intralingual interference. They were collocational errors, choosing inappropriate meaning when looking up the dictionary, word per word translation, and overgeneralization. Key words: Translation, Errors in Translation, English Education Study Program

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop learning media for writing analytical exposition text by using Adobe Flash Professional CS5 for the eleventh students of SMA Swasta Nurul Amaliyah Tanjung Morawa. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, analyzing data, designing media, validating by the experts, revising and final products. The subject of the study was grade XI of SMA Swasta Nurul Amaliyah Tanjung Morawa. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students need a learning media in teaching writing which can help the students to understand about the analytical exposition text. The learning media of Adobe Flash Prrofessional CS5 was validated by experts. The average score is 4.62. It means the developed learning media by using Adobe Flash Professional CS5 is relevant or appropriate and categorized as a very good learning media for students at SMA Swasta Nurul Amaliyah Tanjung Morawa.  Keywords: Research and Development (R&D), Adobe Flash Professional CS5, Analytical Exposition Text

Abstract

This study aims to (1) investigate how the workbook for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan, (2) know relevant workbook needed for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan, (3) develop a students’ workbook for speaking skill based on Inquiry-based Learning for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan. The research was conducted by using the Research and Development method from Gall, Gall and Borg (2003). The research subject was English teacher and students for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan. The instrument used was teacher’s interview and students’ questionnaire. The workbook was validated by validators that consist of material expert and English teacher practitioner by using questionnaires validation sheets. The data were collected by using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that: (1) the existing workbook does not support students to do work actively, (2) relevant workbook that is needed by students is workbook based on inquiry-based learning, and (3) the developed inquiry-based learning workbook has been valid with a percentage of 95.55 % from English lecturer and 97.03% from the English teacher and this workbook is appropriate with students’ needs for speaking skills.                                                                                                 Key words: Inquiry-based Learning, Speaking, Students’ Workbook.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the ability of tenth-grade students of SMA Swasta Imelda Medan in answering reading comprehension question of Higher Order Thinking Skills based on Curriculum 2013 with essay question of Narrative Text legend story. This research was conducted with Quantitative-Descriptive method. The data analysis was a test that consist of 3 analysing level question, 2 evaluating level question and 1 creating level question. Total 6 essay HOTS question with the text was Narrative Text legend story. The test was taken from 30 students of class X-MIPA SMA Swasta Imelda Medan. This research has found that the ability of the tenth-grade students of SMA Swasta Imelda Medan was poor. With the mean of Analysing 49.07; Evaluating 51.25; and Creating 28.3. The number of students who got excellent in analysing were 8 students, evaluating has 10 students and creating only has good category with 2 students. From this research, students should improve their creative and critical thinking. And teachers also need to take more attention to guide the students.
