Abstract

This paper discusses the term ‘kodrat perempuan’ as a cultural value as well as a category of analysis. As a cultural value, kodrat perempuan reflects ideal measurement and standard of woman’s role. Meanwhile, as a category of analysis, it used to explain social realities where domestication and discrimination and their implications towards woman’s role can be elucidated. The source of discourse including religious discursive source plays an important role in constructing the meanings of kodrat either as a cultural value or as a category of analysis. Keywords: Nature of women, cultural values , norms, category analysis, gender, feminist.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i6.1000

Abstract

Abstract

This paper explores Malik's use of the sunna as a crucial source in his legal doctrine, highlighting its significance in the development of Islamic jurisprudence. While Malik's legal thought draws from various sources, including the Qur'an and customary law, the focus of this study is on his methodology in applying the sunna. Recognized for his early contributions to Islamic legal theory, Malik's work, particularly his Muwatta', is frequently cited, underscoring the impact of the sunna in his legal opinions. The paper will examine Malik's references to the sunna, assess its role in his legal reasoning, and consider how the concept of sunna was understood before and during his lifetime.

Abstract

Hermeneutics, or the understanding and interpretation of the role of religion in the context of individual or societal life, positions religion as one of the guiding principles alongside others. In this position, the role of religion is subject to controversy, with at least two major groups: those who consider it important and those who see it as an obstacle to human life. Figures such as Nimrod, Pharaoh, Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, Nietzsche, and others, in their respective emphases, view the socio-political role of religion as hindering societal progress, threatening the power and systems established by religious, cultural, or political elites. Conversely, another significant group does not doubt the role of religion in human life at all. Religion serves as guidance for humans towards salvation and happiness in both the worldly life and the hereafter. This article seeks to examine the important role of religion (specifically Islam) in all aspects of human life as an actualization of Islam's mission as a mercy to the entire universe, with a strong social dimension.

Abstract

The development of knowledge represents the dialectic of social dynamics and knowledge itself, even theology. From there arises various knowledge that later crystallizes into science. One of them is hermeneutics. It is a science that can be simply interpreted as the science of interpretation. This science initially served as a prerequisite for unraveling religious texts that were considered final and sacred. That is why hermeneutics as a science is closely related to the world of theology, specifically the sub-discipline of theology that deals with the methodology and authentication in interpreting the Scriptures in the Christian and Jewish traditions. This paper describes modern hermeneutics from the perspective of understanding, history, and its divisions into methodological, philosophical, and critical hermeneutics.

Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between social movements and anarchism. Theoretically, anarchism can be categorized as a form of radical social protest. To clarify this perspective, the study separately examines the concepts and scope of social movements and anarchism while also connecting them to the broader discourses of democracy and religion. Both democracy and religion provide spaces where expressions of social movements and anarchist tendencies can emerge. By analyzing these intersections, this paper aims to provide a deeper understanding of how anarchism operates within the framework of social movements and its implications for democratic and religious contexts.

Abstract

The effort to recontextualize Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia—or in any other Muslim-populated region—using Western methodological approaches necessitates situating it within the broader development of Western religious studies. Over the past century, Western scholarship on religion has been dominated by historical, comparative, and phenomenological approaches, often influenced by empirical positivism and shaped by the colonial backdrop of Western scholars. This background has led to a research paradigm that positions Western culture as superior to the cultures being studied. Historically, Qur’anic studies in Indonesia have been rooted in the Islamic scholarly tradition of the Middle East, with minimal Western influence until the late 20th century. This can be attributed to Indonesia’s early exposure to Islam and its strong scholarly connections with Middle Eastern institutions. Consequently, Indonesian exegetical traditions have followed textualist approaches similar to those in the Middle East, often focusing on the text itself while overlooking the interpreter and contextual dimensions. The influence of Western scholarship on Indonesian Qur’anic studies remains limited to academic circles, with Indonesian scholars predominantly consuming rather than critically engaging with Western works. Responses to Western methodologies vary: some scholars cautiously integrate Western research, others embrace it as neutral and applicable to Islamic studies, while some advocate for a convergence of Islamic and Western epistemologies. The challenge remains in balancing academic rigor with theological commitments to foster a more dynamic and globally engaged tradition of Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia.
