Abstract

As presidential and vice-presidential candidates seek to capture public attention and understanding, they often employ innovative and creative methods. Both verbal and nonverbal messaging play a crucial role in this process. Therefore, understanding the verbal and nonverbal communication of a potential national leader is essential to prevent future misunderstandings. This study aims to analyze the political verbal and nonverbal communication of presidential (capres) and vice-presidential (cawapres) candidates during the third and fourth debates of the 2024 election using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis. The primary focus of this research is to understand how the concepts of Sign, Object, and Interpretant are used by the candidates to convey their political messages during the debates. The methodology employed is qualitative, utilizing a semiotic analysis approach, which allows the researcher to elucidate the meanings behind the signs and symbols used in political communication. The study finds that the use of certain symbols significantly influences voter perceptions of the candidates. Additionally, the research highlights that signs play a critical role in the effectiveness of political communication, where gestures, facial expressions, and body language enhance the candidates' appeal and credibility in the eyes of the voters. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of more effective political communication strategies in future election campaigns.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the construction of religious identity through intermedial practices and framing strategies in Islamic apologetic content on social media. The study focuses on the Official Bang Zuma YouTube channel, which presents Islamic apologetics through a combination of audio, visual, textual, and online interaction. The research employs a qualitative content analysis method, integrating Robert Entman’s framing theory and Thierry de Duve’s intermedium approach to examine how messages are structured, transmitted, and received by audiences. The findings indicate that Bang Zuma’s apologetic content frames Islam as occupying a defensive position perceived as threatened yet theologically superior, while employing intermedial techniques to reinforce narratives and construct a virtual interpretive community. Three key results emerge: (1) framing-intermedium practices strengthen group identity boundaries and produce a model of “segregative multiculturalism”; (2) although predominantly confrontational, apologetic content leaves room for constructive dialogue through the presence of “digital mediators” among followers; and (3) the development of “multicultural digital literacy” is required to balance the polarizing potential of apologetic content. The implications highlight the importance of inclusive digital literacy strategies to strengthen social cohesion in the era of new media. The originality of this study lies in its integration of framing theory and the intermedium approach to explain how religious identity is shaped within the contemporary digital landscape and its implications for the dynamics of multiculturalism in Indonesia.

Abstract

The virality of the video of Dewa 19 performing surah Al-Fatihah in a music concert has become a widespread discussion on social media, raising debates between artistic expression and the boundaries of religious sacredness. This research aims to understand how religious symbols are represented and reinterpreted in the digital popular culture space. A qualitative approach was used with netnographic methods and framing analysis of social media content responding to the video. Data was collected from comments on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, then analyzed to identify patterns of public interpretation. The results show that the video became a space of negotiation between religious expression, commodification of religious symbols, and shifting religious authority in the digital era. The emergence of polarized opinions reflects new dynamics in the relationship between religion and popular culture. The findings show that social media not only reproduces religious meanings, but also becomes a discursive arena where religious authority is challenged and negotiated. This research contributes to the study of religious communication and digital media in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This research analyzes online media framing of the 30.16-kilometer sea fence case in Banten that emerged in early 2025. Using Robert Entman's framing model, this research specifically compares the way detik.com and Republika Online framed the issue and explores its potential to shape social, religious, or combined movements. The primary data consisted of 16 news articles (8 from each media) published in January 2025. The findings show significant differences in the narrative construction of the two media: detik.com tends to frame the case as a challenge to the authority of the state that requires government assertiveness, while Republika Online emphasizes the dimension of social injustice experienced by coastal communities. There is a strong potential for social movements in the framing of both media, but the potential for religious movements only appears implicitly in Republika Online, while detik.com almost completely ignores this dimension. This research contributes to the understanding of the role of media in shaping opportunities for socio-religious mobilization in Indonesia, and shows how media framing reflects their respective characters, audience segmentation, and ideological orientation.
