Abstract

A slow-release test of urea fertilizer was conducted using chitosan-urea (CS-U) and chitosan/polyvinyl pyrrolidone K30-urea (CS/PVP-U) membranes. The urea membrane synthesis involved a blending method, with PVP K30 added as a component. The slow-release capabilities of CS-U, CS/PVP1-U, CS/PVP2-U, CS/PVP3-U, and CS/PVP4-U membranes were compared. FTIR results showed an increased intensity of the primary NH double peak at 1587 cm-1 and 1640 cm-1, while the C=O spectrum shifted from 1640 to 1647 cm-1 and the -OH group from 3354 cm-1 to 3362 cm-1, indicating hydrogen bond formation in CS/PVP-U. XRD analysis confirmed the membrane’s amorphous structure, and FE-SEM and AFM studies revealed morphology and roughness differences, with CS/PVP4-U having the largest cross-sectional diameter. The release study showed that PVP-modified chitosan membranes increased urea release, achieving 60 ppm/2 days for the first 16 days, then decreasing to about 55 ppm through day 30, with partial urea release controlled over time. This suggests that SRF fertilizer can effectively control urea release into the environment.

Abstract

This research aims to synthesize and characterize a bacterial cellulose (BC)-based composite with graphite and TiO2-ZnO as reinforcement materials using ex-situ synthesis with CTAB as a surfactant. FTIR and SEM-EDS analysis revealed interactions between the matrix and the reinforcement materials, as well as irregular particle distribution in the BC/G-TiO2-ZnO composite. The addition of graphite to BC significantly increased the conductivity of the composite, while the addition of TiO2-ZnO had the opposite effect. The mechanical properties of the composite exhibited an inverse relationship with the conductivity parameter. Swelling tests indicated that pH and the addition of CTAB influenced the swelling behavior of the BC-based composite. The results of this study provide a strong foundation for the development of potential applications in the fields of electronics and pollutant filtration. The synthesis of this composite aims to harness the unique properties of BC, graphite, and TiO2-ZnO, creating a multifunctional material with potential uses in flexible electronics, sensors, biocompatible conductive materials, and advanced filtration systems.

Abstract

A chitosan-zinc oxide (ZnO)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/pomegranate peel extract (PE) based hydrogel has been developed as a potential material to accelerate the wound healing process by controlling the drug release mechanism. ZnO nanoparticles with an average size of about 95 nm were synthesized using the coprecipitation method and then combined into chitosan/PEG composites to improve the antimicrobial properties of the hydrogels. Characterization of the hydrogels included analysis of size, morphology, elemental composition, microstructure, swelling behavior, antibacterial activity, and wound healing effectiveness. The results of the in vitro study indicated that the antibacterial activity of PE-containing hydrogel against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus decreased due to the chelation effect caused by PE addition. However, in vivo tests for 10 d showed that the PE-containing hydrogel had better wound healing ability than commercial betadine. In addition, the developed hydrogel showed high biocompatibility with excellent antibacterial activity. This study confirmed that chitosan/PEG/ZnO nanoparticle hydrogel has the potential as wound dressing materials with sustained drug release and optimal healing effectiveness.
