Abstract

The increasing awareness of environmental issues has influenced the use of eco-friendly materials, one of which is the use of natural fibers in biocomposites. Plant fibers are one of the sources of natural fibers that can be used as reinforcement in polymer matrix composites. Various studies have been conducted on many types of plants to explore sources of natural fibers. One natural fiber that has potential as a reinforcement in biocomposites is fiber from bark. In terms of physical and chemical properties, bark fibers can meet the criteria for reinforcement in polymer matrix composites. The tensile strength of single fibers from various types of bark ranges from 243.94 MPa to 1608 MPa. When compared to other natural fibers, such as ramie fiber with a tensile strength of 408 MPa and areca palm petiole fiber with 104.12 MPa, it can be concluded that bark fibers are equivalent to or even stronger than several other types of natural fibers. This review aims to provide background and information about the potential of bark fibers through several characterizations and tests, allowing for conclusions to be drawn regarding the feasibility of bark fibers as reinforcement in polymer matrix composites.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a Dynamic Vibration Absorber (DVA) for a four-wheeled vehicle, specifically the "Toyota Fortuner 4.0 V6 SR" model. The quarter vehicle structure was modeled as a two degree of freedom system with disturbances in the form of road contours and speed. The natural frequency of the DVA was designed to be equal to the lowest natural frequency of the vehicle. Hence, if the vehicle moved at a speed or road contour disturbance close to its natural frequency, the vibration energy will be transferred or received by the DVA so that the vehicle structure did not oscillate. Two DVAs were mounted on the top of the vehicle body. The results obtained the vibration that occurs when the disturbance frequency was closed to the lowest natural frequency of the ¼ vehicle structure. It was significantly reduced by the addition of two DVAs. The design model of the ¼ vehicle test structure and Dynamic Vibration Absorber (DVA) in this study can be used as a reference for the implementation of experiments. The results of experimental calculations can be compared with the results of theoretical calculations to strengthen the credibility of the results.

Abstract

The Archimedes screw is a hydropower technology well-suited for low-head applications This study investigates the performance of a laboratory-scale Archimedes screw turbine for low-head hydropower applications by varying pitch-to-diameter ratio (P/D = 0.3, 0.38, 0.45, 0.52) and inclination angle (β = 22°, 25°, 27°). Experiments were conducted in a controlled water flow environment to evaluate torque, power output, and efficiency at different rotational speeds. Results indicate that both P/D and β significantly influence energy conversion. The highest performance was achieved at P/D = 0.45 and β = 22°, producing a peak torque of 0.36 Nm, a power output of 2.4 W, and a maximum efficiency of 52.37%. Lower inclination angles contributed to improved hydraulic energy capture due to better water filling and reduced slippage. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing geometric parameters to enhance turbine performance in small-scale, sustainable energy systems. The results offer design guidance for implementing Archimedes screw turbines in rural or off-grid low-head hydropower scenarios.

Abstract

The interest in using natural fibers as reinforcement in polymer matrix composites is increasing, driven by their abundant availability, biodegradability, and significantly lower production costs compared to synthetic fibers. The cellulose content in natural fibers has a significant impact on the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the fibers, ultimately affecting the mechanical strength of the composites. To enhance the cellulose content in the fibers, one approach is to use alkali treatment with a NaOH solution on the fibers. To evaluate the effectiveness of the chemical treatment and study the physical and mechanical characteristics of the fibers, as well as to assess the potential and feasibility of the fibers as reinforcement in polymer matrix composites, a series of characterizations or tests on the fibers needs to be conducted. This review article will discuss in depth the methods of characterizing natural fibers and the influence of their physical and mechanical properties on composite strength. This article is expected to provide a positive contribution to the development of polymer matrix composite materials reinforced with natural fibers.

Abstract

Indonesia is a maritime country that has an abundance of marine catches. In 2022, the production of marine catches reached 24.85 millions tons, while the export amount was 1.221 millions tons. This is due to the limited technology that can extend the freshness of marine catches. Based on this problem, a cooling system was designed in the form of an ABF that can freeze marine catch products. The Air Blast Freezing (ABF) system is designed at an air temperature of -40oC using a cascade refrigeration system. The working fluid used is R290/R32 hydrocarbon, which has very low GWP and ODP so it is safe for the environment and the earth's ozone layer. The results obtained show that the cooling load is 444.037 Watts, the LTC compressor power and HTC compressor power are 116.19 Watts and 205.98 watts. The designed air blast freezing system has a surface area of LTC evaporator of 2.670 m2 and HTC condenser of 4.780 m2. The calculated capillary pipe length is 1.94 m for HTC and 1.51 m for LTC, the COP of the ABF system is 2.774.

Abstract

This study applies the Six Sigma-DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) methodology combined with process capability analysis to enhance energy efficiency, specifically by reducing the steam to electricity ratio of a steam turbine. Initial measurements indicated a steam-to-electricity ratio of 4.5 to 5.34 kg/kWh, highlighting high steam consumption and poor efficiency. The process was unstable, with Cp and Cpk values of 0.30 and -0.16, and a defect rate exceeding 560,000 DPMO. Using an Ishikawa diagram, a vacuum leak in the steam turbine condenser was identified as the main cause of excessive steam consumption. After repairing the condenser, monitoring showed significant improvements, with the steam to electricity ratio reducing to 3.0 – 4.0 kg/kWh. Process capability improved, with Cp increasing to 1.39, Cpk to 1.02, and Z-bench to 3.05 (equivalent to 1,143 DPMO). The Anderson-Darling test confirmed a normal distribution (p-value = 0.464). Six Sigma-DMAIC effectively optimized steam turbine performance.
