Abstract

This research aims to develop an interactive book as a medium to foster empathy in early childhood towards endemic animals in South Kalimantan, particularly the proboscis monkey (Bekantan) and mudskipper fish (Timpakul). The research follows a research and development (R&D) methodology, encompassing need analysis, product design, development, and evaluation stages. The interactive book, titled Antan & Kepi: The Friendship that Grew by the River, tells the story of a friendship between Antan, the proboscis monkey, and Kepi, the mudskipper, which forms when Antan shows empathy by rescuing Kepi from being trapped in rocks. The book aims to address the identified lack of local wisdom-based reading materials, particularly those featuring endemic animals, available to young learners in South Kalimantan. The product was validated by two experts: a media expert and an early childhood English expert. The validation process assessed content feasibility, alignment with psychological and linguistic development, and technical aspects of media presentation. The final product received an overall validation score of 86.08%, indicating high feasibility for use. Despite this, experts suggested improvements in font size and image clarity to enhance readability and visual appeal. The findings highlight the potential of interactive media to contextualize learning and support language acquisition while instilling empathy and environmental awareness in young children. The interactive book provides an engaging, culturally relevant resource for early childhood education, offering a meaningful, localized learning experience that connects children with their environment.

Abstract

In today's educational landscape, digital literacy has emerged as a critical skill for pre-service teachers, enabling them to effectively utilize technology in classrooms and provide students with valuable information technology resources. This study aims to investigate the digital literacy levels of pre-service teachers participating in a teaching assistance program at school. Employing descriptive statistics, the research analyzed data collected from pre-service teachers enrolled in the Teaching Assistance Program, using a framework designed to assess teacher digital literacy across five key dimensions: information management, team-based learning, information processing and presentation, digital integrity, and social responsibility. The findings reveal that pre-service teachers demonstrated a high level of digital literacy across all dimensions. While highlighting their readiness to employ information and communications technology (ICT) for educational purposes, the results also underscore an ongoing need for further development in digital literacy skills. Importantly, these findings contribute significantly to providing insightful data regarding the level of digital literacy of pre-service teachers. Next, future research endeavors should address the limitations of this study by employing diversified methodologies and ensuring broader sample representations.

Abstract

The SEA-Teacher Program is a collaborative initiative among Southeast Asian nations, pioneered by SEAMEO, which aims to enhance pre-service teachers’ intercultural competence and teaching skills through cross-cultural practice. The urgency of this research stems from the complex challenges participants face during their placements, such as language barriers, cultural differences, and diverse education systems. These conditions impact learning effectiveness and participant adaptation, necessitating in-depth strategies and reflection to address them. Analyze the specific counter-strategies, coping mechanisms, and support systems employed by the pre-service teachers to effectively navigate and overcome these challenges. Generate practical recommendations and evidence-based strategies derived from these experiences to inform the preparation of future participants, enhance program design for educators and policymakers, and strengthen regional collaboration in teacher education. Highlight the lessons learned and best practices developed by the participants in promoting adaptability, resilience, and problem-solving skills, thereby contributing to their professional and personal transformation into effective future teachers. The study method employed is a qualitative approach with reflective analysis. Data were gathered through interviews, teaching practice reports, and participant reflection notes. The analysis is focused on identifying intercultural, linguistic, and pedagogical challenges, as well as the adaptation strategies used, such as collaboration with local teachers, modification of teaching methods, and the utilization of cultural experiences.

Abstract

Recent technology advancements have altered the perception of literacy, and it is no longer limited to the connection with the print text. The shifting meaning of literacy has been reflected in the growing number of teachers who are integrating digital learning into their reading instruction. However, little is known about the evidence of future teachers’ views on the implementation of digital learning, specifically in relation to young learners’ early literacy. Thus, this study aims to examine pre-service teachers’ perceptions of the benefits, drawbacks, and reading skills taught by using digital learning to enhance early reading skills in EFL context. This study will investigate seventy pre-service teachers who have taken English for Young Learners courses. The data of this study is collected by distributing questionnaires consisting of three aspects (benefits, drawbacks, and reading skills) concerning digital learning usage, using a Likert scale (strongly disagree, disagree, agree, and strongly agree) as the measurement. The survey will be conducted using google form. The study's findings will reveal how pre-service teachers perceive the benefits, drawbacks, and reading skills taught by implementing digital learning in young learners’ classrooms. Keywords: digital reading, young learners, english, pre-service teachers, teachers’ perception
