Abstract

This research focuses on the effect of teachers’ high income (teachers’ sertificate) for English teachers to increase the quality of teaching in the classroom. It is found that the teachers with sertificate in Banjarbaru always-often (<60%) try to understand the students’ potency and characteristics. Generally, teachers in state junior high school, state senior high school, and vocational high school have mastered the theories and the principles of teaching effectively. However, the advantage of high income from teachers’ sertificate does not give the positive effect to increase their capacities as professional teachers. The consciousness of teachers’ performance after getting high income from teachers’ sertificate is not relatively satisfying. The teacher’s performance to take part in education and training and to buy complementary books for capacity building is not satisfying.

Abstract

The primary goal of learning a foreign language is to be able to communicate in the language, both in spoken and written form. This is also the case for Indonesian learners especially learners of English Language Education Program in ULM who learn English as their major. However, most of them believe that without abundant knowledge of grammar, they will not be able to speak or even write in English well. One of the problems they face is that they still doubt or confuse which tense(s) of English they have to use when they speak or write. This study aimed at finding out the learners’ problems batch 2018 in using English tenses by using a multiple choice test and a questionnaire. The study employed a quantitative approach and described the result in descriptive form. The subject of this study was the whole population of English Language Education Program batch 2018, in total 98 students. The findings reveal that most of them have problems with past perfect tense (61%), past perfect continuous tense (61%), and future perfect continuous tense (67%). These problems related to the difficulty in applying the aspect and tense in the right context, first language interference, lack of practice and repetition, and students’ confidence in using the language. It is suggested that language teachers should focus their language instruction not only to form but also to function and meaning of the tenses. Additionally, using various techniques suited to teaching tenses is advisable to increase students’ to increase communicative skills.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an interactive book as a medium to foster empathy in early childhood towards endemic animals in South Kalimantan, particularly the proboscis monkey (Bekantan) and mudskipper fish (Timpakul). The research follows a research and development (R&D) methodology, encompassing need analysis, product design, development, and evaluation stages. The interactive book, titled Antan & Kepi: The Friendship that Grew by the River, tells the story of a friendship between Antan, the proboscis monkey, and Kepi, the mudskipper, which forms when Antan shows empathy by rescuing Kepi from being trapped in rocks. The book aims to address the identified lack of local wisdom-based reading materials, particularly those featuring endemic animals, available to young learners in South Kalimantan. The product was validated by two experts: a media expert and an early childhood English expert. The validation process assessed content feasibility, alignment with psychological and linguistic development, and technical aspects of media presentation. The final product received an overall validation score of 86.08%, indicating high feasibility for use. Despite this, experts suggested improvements in font size and image clarity to enhance readability and visual appeal. The findings highlight the potential of interactive media to contextualize learning and support language acquisition while instilling empathy and environmental awareness in young children. The interactive book provides an engaging, culturally relevant resource for early childhood education, offering a meaningful, localized learning experience that connects children with their environment.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe implementation of progressive educational philosophy in language education in Indonesia represents not only a pedagogical shift but also a transformative approach to modernizing the national education system. Rooted in John Dewey’s principles of experiential learning, contextual relevance, and social collaboration, progressive education aligns with the demands of 21st-century language learning. This study delves deeper into its application, revealing significant advancements in students’ linguistic competence, with writing and speaking skills increasing by up to 24% and 20%, respectively. Furthermore, progressive methods such as project-based learning, simulations, and the integration of technology have fostered critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, with 95% of students reporting higher engagement in gamified learning environments. Beyond its immediate impacts, progressive education in language learning equips students with the tools to navigate global challenges and become active contributors to their communities. Despite its promise, barriers such as infrastructural limitations, insufficient teacher readiness, and systemic resistance highlight the need for targeted interventions. This study concludes that progressive education offers a pathway to holistic transformation in Indonesia’s language education, advocating for policy reforms, investment in technology, and comprehensive teacher training to institutionalize its benefits on a national scale.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of nativism perspective in Indonesian language learning in higher education. This research applies a qualitative method with a literature study approach, where written sources, such as books and journals, are the main references. The literature research method is used to find and collect references that can support and deepen the study in articles and books. The results found that nativism theory states that individual development, including language skills, is influenced by innate or genetic factors. In education, a child's learning ability, including language acquisition, is more determined by natural potential, while environmental factors play a minor role. In higher education, nativism can be applied by optimizing students' innate potential in learning Indonesian, while paying attention to mother tongue interference in phonology and morphology. An environment rich in language stimulation, such as social interaction and media use, is also important to optimally develop students' language skills.
