Abstract

Abstract

This study explored the integration of cultural components in speaking skills instruction at SMAN 3 Pangkalpinang. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, data was sourced from a questionnaire given to 130 students and interviews with two teachers. Secondary data was extracted from documentation. Multiple cultural components were identified as beneficial for speaking instruction, including intellectual values, lifestyle behaviors, media, artistic values, family, minor values, major values, and formal values. These components exhibited mutual support, rendering them inseparable. Both educators and students acknowledged the effectiveness of integrating these components in enhancing English oral proficiency. The intertwined nature of the cultural components suggests a need for a holistic approach to language instruction, emphasizing both linguistic and cultural elements. Educational institutions should consider adapting their curricula to incorporate these components, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of language and its associated cultural nuances. Furthermore, educators require training to effectively weave these components into their teaching strategies. The unanimous positive feedback indicates that such integration not only bolsters linguistic capabilities but also enriches overall communication skills. Incorporating cultural components into language instruction presents a promising strategy for enhancing speaking skills, with significant implications for curriculum design, pedagogical approaches, and improved language outcomes.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of Task-Based Learning (TBL) and student motivation on the reading comprehension abilities of eighth-grade students with a moderate level of English proficiency. The research aims to assess the effectiveness of TBL in improving reading comprehension outcomes and investigate the relationship between TBL, student motivation, and reading comprehension performance. The study includes sixty-four participants aged 12-14 from a public junior high school in Palembang, Indonesia. The control group receives traditional instruction, while the experimental group is taught using TBL. Pretests and posttests evaluate reading comprehension, and a questionnaire measures student motivation levels. The results reveal significant improvements in reading comprehension scores for both groups. The experimental group demonstrates an average post-test score increase of 69.88%, indicating the efficacy of TBL. While student motivation influences outcomes, no significant interaction with TBL is observed. These findings emphasize the effectiveness of TBL in enhancing reading comprehension for students with moderate English proficiency and underscore the importance of considering motivation in instructional practices. Educators can utilize these insights to enhance instructional strategies and optimize reading comprehension outcomes for similar student populations.

Abstract

There are many official job advertisement websites provided by companies that can be reached by job seekers. Many of them are available in English. The researcher aimed to identify the types of grammatical errors and the frequencies and percentages of each type of grammatical errors. The research method of this research was qualitative descriptive. The data of the research were taken from fifteen JS document publication job advertisement texts. Seven steps of Creswell data analysis were used in analyzing errors which included: organizing and preparing the data analysis, reading all the data, starting coding all of the data, using the coding process to generate a description of the setting as well as categories for analysis, quantifying the errors, interpreting the description, and drawing a conclusion. It was found that there were 250 errors made by advertisement text writers. Four types oferrors were found in the data.Such errors were 91 items (36.4%) of omission errors, 20 items (8.0%) of addition errors, 138 items (55.2%) of misformation errors, and 1 item (0.4%) of misordering errors.

Abstract

This study investigates how junior high school students can improve their command of English vocabulary by using the Duolingo program. It tackles the problem of low vocabulary retention and student involvement that is frequently present in conventional language training. The purpose of the study is to find out how students view Duolingo as a gamified learning resource and what factors affect how well it helps them learn new words. A descriptive analysis approach was used, based on the results of several recent empirical investigations. The findings demonstrate how Duolingo greatly enhances students' learner autonomy, contextual usage, and vocabulary retention. More incentive and active engagement are encouraged by its gamified features, which include level progression, point systems, and rapid feedback. Compared to traditional techniques, students said using Duolingo to learn vocabulary felt more fun and less taxing. Additionally, the multimodal information on the platform accommodates different learning styles, and its adaptability promotes self-directed learning. However, other issues were also noted, like the need for teacher direction and digital inequality. The conversation focuses on Duolingo's contribution to raising student participation in class and encouraging proactive rather than passive behavior. In conclusion, Duolingo is a useful addition to vocabulary training in junior high EFL classes. It improves language learning results and encourages self-directed learning when carefully included into a blended learning framework. Its long-term effects and uses in many educational contexts are encouraged to be investigated in future studies.

Abstract

This study was a quasi-experimental research and oriented to measure the effectiveness for student-teachers’ reading comprehension achievement. There were 80 student-teachers who joined and were grouped into experimental and control groups. They were treated for eight meetings. Both pretest and posttest instruments were integrated for collecting the data. Both paired and independent t-tests were employed to know improvement of the two groups. The findings showed that in pretest, both of groups encountered problems related to reading comprehension. However, after being treated with this Schoology learning management system (LMS) for several meetings, experimental group students gained better achievement in reading comprehension comparing to control group. Mean scores of experimental group (75.250) was bigger than control group gained (61.875). By the same token, the F-test score (0.392) with df (78) and sig. value (0.000) informed about different qualities gained by both groups, i.e., experimental and control. In a nutshell, the integration of Schoology LMS is more effective in increasing students’ reading comprehension comparing to conventional mode of learning.
