Abstract

Palm off grade is a sort of CPO mill utilization which is not maximized. Palm off grade produced approximately 7-10% of the processing capacity of the plant CPO. Oil-palm off grade has a high free fatty acid contents, so it needs two stage process to produce biodiesel. The purpose of this research is to produce biodiesel with a maximum yield above 90%, determine the effectiveness of biodiesel production using a two-stage process with natural zeolite catalysts and determine the effect of temperature, mole ratio of oil : methanol and the concentration of catalyst to biodiesel yield. In this research, natural zeolite modified using 75% KOH solution. Then, biodiesel production have done in two stage, that was esterification and transesterification with variation of temperature (50°C, 60°C, 70°C), mole ratio of oil : methanol (1: 6, 1: 8, 1:10) and concentration of catalyst (2%-w, 4%-w, 6%-w) in transesterification. The highest yield of biodiesel is 96.99% at temperature 60°C, mole ratio of oil : methanol 1: 8 and concentration catalyst 4%-w. The result showed that the process conditions which influencing the yield of biodiesel is the reaction temperature and catalyst concentration.Keywords: biodiesel, natural zeolite, off grade palm oil, response surface methodology.

Abstract

Most energy consumption in the chemical industry is used for temperature change operations. Heat integration method is used to increase energy efficiency on process streams and reducing utility requirement in the production process by installing Heat Exchanger Network (HEN). Design of HEN can be done by software assistance or often called tools for speed up the design time. Therefore software that can be obtained for free and can be developed openly is needed. Program for HEN design is created by Python programming language and applying computational algorithm Maximum Energy Recovery (MER) target calculation using interval-temperature (IT) method and network design using pinch method. The program will be displayed by Graphical User Interface (GUI) using PyQt library on Python.Keyword: heat integration, HEN, software, Python, PyQt

Abstract

Fatty alcohol is a derivative of vegetable fats and animal oils, and is a non-oil and gas export commodity that is needed by various industries such as perfumes, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food and beverages. demand for alcohol is increasing every year. The import of alcohol has been carried out, but the domestic demand for alcohol has not been met. This has led to the establishment of a fatty alcohol factory with crude palm oil as the main raw material to meet these needs. The plant has an annual production capacity of 130,000 tons and will be established in Pelintung, Dumai. The production of fatty alcohols is carried out through three processes: pretreatment, transesterification and hydrogenation. The main equipment of this tool is designed as a hydrogenation reactor, which functions to react methyl ester with hydrogen with the help of a CuCr catalyst. The operating temperature used is 1700C with an operating pressure of 100 bar. The hydrogenation reactor is 4,006 m (157.72 in) high and uses skirt supports. Factory economic analysis is carried out to determine the feasibility of the factory to be built. Based on the results of the economic feasibility analysis of the factory, the Fatty alcohol factory is feasible to be built with IRR 24.164%, ROI 27.35% and BEP 58%.Keywords: Crude palm oil, economic analysis, fatty alcohol, hydrogenation, transesterification

Abstract

Packaging material’s demand continue to increase along with the development of industry all over the world. Styrofoam as conventional packaging materials, have been looked for a subtitute because it does not decompose and the depletion of fossil fuels as it’s feedstock. Cornstalk has abundant amount as biomass waste. Despite it’s well known quality as raw material for pulp, it hasn’t got utilized yet. Molded pulp as one of the alternative packaging, has a promising future with it’s degradable characteristics and good mechanical properties. Cornstalk as raw material for the pulp along with the empty fruit bunch (EFB) ash works as the alkaline source for the alkaline pulping. The binderless molded pulp then formed with the help of hot press. The thermoset properties of the lignin itself, give the posibility to produce molded pulp without any binder resin. Tensile index, tear index and burst index were determined experimentally to express the mechanical properties of the binderless molded pulp products. This experiment were done as an effort to utilize the biorenewable resource to make a packaging product that could be an alternative to the conventional one.The result indicate that cornstalk as raw material to produce molded pulp gives good mechanical properties compare to styrofoam packaging product. Molded pulp from cornstalk gives tensile index 17,5 – 34 Nm/g, tear index  10 – 26 mN.m2/g and burst index 0,89 – 1,52 kPa.m2/g. In generally, variation of temperature give dominant significant influence to mechanical properties of molded pulp.Keywords: Binderless; Cornstalk; EFB Ash; Packaging; Molded Pulp

Abstract

Biomass gasification is a technology that can be used to convert biomass into gas fuel, chemicals, and energy which is more convenient and usable. The quality of the resulting product depends on the of gasification agents such as air, steam, oxygen, and process parameters such as temperature, type of biomass, and equivalent ratio. The biomass gasification process presents the mathematical model that has been given and solve the modeling with non-stoichiometric thermodynamic equilibrium method. The non-stoichiometric thermodynamic equilibrium model involves minimizing the Gibbs free energy. Abstract

The shortage of availability and increasing prices of Liquefied Natural Gas (LPG) encourage some people to use firewood as an alternative to traditional cooking fuel. The utilization of conventional stoves for combustion results in the generation of carbon monoxide (CO) emissions which can be dangerous to human health. Gasification stoves produce less CO emissions than conventional stoves and produce thermal efficiencies up to 35%. The shortage and high expense of LPG can be avoided by using biomass waste, such as twigs, wood chips, and palm fronds, as fuel for gasification stoves instead of kerosene or LPG. The gasification stove used in the socialization was designed based on the dimensions of the Champion Stove Top-Lit Up Draft. Wood logs that have been cut to a size of 6–9 cm and a width of 1 cm are utilized as fuel. 1.5 liters of water were successfully boiled for nine minutes by KOMAS gasification stoves. This socialization activities attracted the attention community of Batu Belah Village and at the end of this socialization, the team gave gasification stoves to the local community as an effort to apply the technology.

Abstract

The demand for natural self-care products is rising as more people recognize the value of keeping healthy skin and protecting the environment. Cooking oil, which is a derivative of palm oil, is an ingredient that is easily found by people in Batu Belah Village, Kampar Regency. This material has great potential to be processed into value-added products such as liquid soap. This study focuses on the use of cooking oil as the primary ingredient for producing liquid soap, while also opening new economic opportunities for the village community. This initiative captured the interest of Batu Belah People.In an attempt to implement the technology, the community service team distribute the liquid soap to the neighborhood.

Abstract

Methanol plant from glycerol is a good prospect in Indonesia. Until 2021, methanol is only supplied by one methanol producer located in East Kalimantan, namely PT. Kalimantan Timur with a production capacity of 660,000 tons/year. Therefore, the methanol plant from glycerol has a very important meaning for the acquisition of foreign exchange as well as employment. This article presents an economic evaluation of a methanol plant from glycerol with a capacity of 40,000 tons/year. Profitability analysis calculation is done by two methods, the method that do not consider the time value of money and the method that consider the time value of money. The results of the method that do not consider the time value of money obtained ROI value (before tax) 34.62%, ROI value (after tax) 24.24%, and the value of PBP 2.98 years. Using the method that consider the time value of money, the NPW value was Rp. 1,458 billion and the DCFRR / IRR was 39.25%. The sensitivity analysis also deserves to see the effect of the factor that influence the economic viability, and provide more information for the optimization of Methanol production.
