Abstract

Abstract

Technological innovations have significantly influenced language learning approaches, particularly among Arabic Literature students. Duolingo, a gamified language learning application, has gained popularity for vocabulary development. However, its effectiveness in academic contexts remains underexplored. This study employed a mixed-methods design to assess Duolingo’s impact on vocabulary acquisition among 50 Arabic Literature students at Hasanuddin University. Participants completed pre- and post-tests over a two-week period of Duolingo use. Additionally, a questionnaire was administered to collect students’ perceptions of the app's usability and educational value. Findings revealed that 74% of students improved their vocabulary scores, with an average increase of 4.8 points. Students reported that Duolingo’s spaced repetition and gamification features enhanced motivation and vocabulary retention. However, 24% showed slight score declines, attributing this to the app’s limited focus on grammar, writing, and speaking—skills essential for academic success. While Duolingo supports vocabulary development through engaging and interactive methods, it falls short in providing comprehensive language instruction. These limitations suggest the necessity of integrating supplementary learning tools to support grammar and productive language skills. Duolingo can serve as a valuable supplementary tool for vocabulary learning but should not replace holistic language instruction. Future research should investigate the incorporation of artificial intelligence to enhance its capabilities in grammar and speaking skill development.

Abstract

This study investigates user acceptance of Arabicapp based on morphosyntactic patterns. The application aims to support learners in recognizing verb forms and transitivity patterns, which are widely acknowledged as challenging aspects of Arabic grammar acquisition. To evaluate user acceptance, the study employed the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), examining five core constructs: Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Perceived Usefulness (PU), Attitude Toward Use (ATU), Behavioural Intention (BI), and Actual Usage (AU). A quantitative survey was administered to a diverse group of participants, including university students, lecturers, and Arabic language practitioners. Data were collected through staged evaluations and analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression techniques. The results indicate consistently high levels of acceptance across all TAM constructs, with ease of use and behavioural intention receiving the highest mean scores. However, regression analysis reveals that Perceived Usefulness significantly predicts Behavioural Intention, whereas Perceived Ease of Use does not show a statistically significant effect. This finding suggests that perceived instructional value plays a more decisive role than interface simplicity in determining adoption of morphosyntactic learning tools. Overall, the findings demonstrate that Arabicapp effectively supports Arabic grammar learning, particularly in verb identification tasks, and shows strong potential for use in both formal and non-formal instructional contexts. The study contributes to TAM-based research in language technology by highlighting that, in cognitively demanding learning environments such as morphosyntax, perceived usefulness emerges as the primary driver of user adoption.

Abstract

This study examines the morpho-semantic mechanisms underlying the use of the word kabura (كبر) and its derivatives in the Qur’an. Variations in morphological patterns (wazn) are shown to significantly influence shifts in meaning across theological, ethical, and evaluative domains. The research employs a qualitative–descriptive, corpus-based approach using a complete retrieval technique to collect all Qur’anic instances of the root k-b-r. Data analysis integrates derivational morphology with Context Theory (Naẓariyyah al-Siyāq) to map evaluative polarity. The study identifies 161 occurrences distributed across 18 major derivational forms, consisting of 106 nominal (ism) forms and 55 verbal (fiʿl) forms. The findings demonstrate a systematic semantic pattern: (1) nominal forms such as al-kabīr and kibriyāʾ consistently express a positive evaluative pole denoting divine majesty; (2) verbal forms following the istafʿala pattern, such as istakbara, form a negative pole associated with human arrogance; and (3) several forms appear semantically neutral, with meanings determined entirely by context. These results offer pedagogical implications for Arabic language teaching, particularly in enhancing learners’ awareness of how morphological variation and contextual indicators jointly shape meaning in Qur’anic discourse, enabling more accurate interpretation and reducing semantic error.

Abstract

The lexeme qadha is one of the most frequent lexical items in the Qur’an, appearing 63 times in various morphological forms derived from the root q-d-y and exhibiting semantic variations across contexts. This study aims to identify its contextual meanings and examine how linguistic and situational contexts influence its interpretation in the Qur’anic text. This research employs a qualitative descriptive design using a contextual semantic approach. The data consist of all Qur’anic verses containing forms of qadha, analyzed using a semantic framework based on linguistic context (siyāq al-lughawī) and situational context (siyāq al-mawqif). The findings show that the basic meaning of qadha as a decree develops into several contextual meanings, including judgment, completion, creation, destruction, command, and death, depending on the context. These results confirm that lexical meaning is systematically shaped by context and highlight the broader relevance of contextual semantic analysis for linguistic and semantic studies of religious and classical texts
