Abstract

ABSTRACT:  The effect of globalisation on human capital development is decisive. A country that lacks the means to compete in global market is often left behind. Competitiveness is based on a countrys capacity to add value to global economic products, services and processes. A key contributor in this regard is the knowledge and skills of the workforce. The education and skills of the workforce will be the key competitive weapon for the 21st century. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the career satisfaction among vocational teachers in the selected technical secondary schools in Malaysia. The aspects that were studied include the job domain, the work environment and the flow of information within the organisation. A sample of 101 vocational teachers in Technical Secondary Schools in Negeri Sembilan and Melaka was selected. The questionnaire contained three sections: (1) profile of the respondents; (2) job satisfaction; and (3) open-ended questions. Descriptive statistics in the forms of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used for the data analysis. The study found that the environmental and job factors are the aspects which bestow job satisfaction to vocational teachers, while the aspect of flow of information within the organisation was rated low. Therefore, the school administrators need to improve the flow of information in the organisation especially between the administrators and vocational teachers in order to enhance job satisfaction among vocational educators.KEYWORDS: job satisfaction, vocational teachers, human resource development, and Job Descriptive Index in Malaysia.About the Author: Professor Dr. Ramlee Mustapha is the Director of the Centre for Learner Diversity, Faculty of Education UKM (National University of Malaysia) in Bangi, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The emergent entrepreneurial paradigm has led to the increasing role of the research university in knowledge innovation, hence making entrepreneurial research university a global phenomenon. Research universities are expected to provide intellectual innovations for the economic and societal advancement. It is argued that to ensure an effective achievement of research university’s objectives, appropriate definition and model must be identified. This article attempts to propose a generic model of knowledge innovation for the research university. It identifies the definitions of the research university, knowledge innovation, and best practices of the established research universities. It then looks into the process of knowledge creation and innovation in research universities. Based on the review of literature, this article proposes a model of knowledge innovation for the research university by integrating knowledge innovation framework and the simplified Triple Helix Model. The focus of this article, however, is on the knowledge innovation. Knowledge innovation is most relevant in the context of research university. Literature also indicates that there are two forms of innovation, namely, incremental and radical innovations.KEY WORDS: knowledge innovation, research university, Triple Helix Model, and entrepreneurial paradigm.About the Author: Professor Dr. Ramlee B. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this action research was to identify the problems faced by electrical and electronic engineering or PKEE (Pelajaran Kejuruteraan Eelektronik dan Elektrik) students studying a difficult topic – transistor. This study was also aimed at examining students’ attitude towards Problem-based Learning (PBL). PBL is said to enhance students’ understanding and make the learning more meaningful. This action research was based on Kemmis and McTaggart (1998) model. Jigsaw technique was also used in the first and second rounds of the study whereas the discussion technique was used in the third round. A sample of 30 Form 5 students from a Technical School Melaka, Malaysia was selected. The treatment was given for a nine-weeks duration. Data were obtained from peer assessment, observation, and pre- and post-tests. Descriptive statistics used in this study, include frequency, mean, and standard deviation. The study found that the collaboration skill of the students increases in each round and their achievements also show better results. Students’ attitude became more positive with regard to PBL. In the open-ended questions, the respondents said that they like collaborative and problem-solving activities. Thus, teachers are suggested to use this method. However, for those who are not confident or do not have the skills to use the PBL method, it is advised that training and guidance be given to them. PBL workshops and short courses should be offered to them.KEY WORDS: Action research, problem-based learning, jigsaw technique, electrical and electronic engineering, and technical school.About the Authors: Prof. Dr. Ramlee Mustapha and Zaharatul Laila Abdul Rahim are Lecturers at the Faculty of Technical and Vocational Education UPSI (Sultan Idris University of Education), Tanjong Malim, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Malaysia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Educators are faced with the challenge of adapting their teaching styles to accommodate a new generation of digital learners. These digital learners, who are now entering colleges and universities, have learning expectations, styles, and needs different from past students. The question is how to adapt teaching strategies to accommodate the digital learners, in light of their preferences for digital literacy, experiential learning, interactivity, and immediacy? Meanwhile, the higher education today has also the opportunity to reshape itself and play an important role in the future of our society. Whether that role is ultimately fulfilled will depend on fresh, creative thinking, and a firm commitment to move teaching, learning, and the university into the digital age. The manner in which students are taught will not truly change until the manner in which we teach and evaluate students change. This working paper tries to elaborate the multiple studies that suggest moving students from consumers of information to producers of information. This is the key to engaging digital learning. However, until teachers are trained to expect and accept content gathered through social networks with emphasis on teaching students how to check validity and reliability of the web, the full power of the digital natives can not be released or expanded. Finally, this working paper recommends that teachers must allow students to publish broadly then promote peer and expert outside evaluation. These new learners are instructed by teachers who, for the majority, spent childhoods engulfed in television programs that fed information for consumption, rather than interaction, omitting the choices and short snippets that lead to further discovery. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Blogs are now marking a new mode of communication, making impact on domains such as virtual formation of speech communities, knowledge-sharing, pedagogical implication as well as formation of virtual identity. It is estimated that more than three billion websites in the world today and more than 70 million are blogs. In Malaysia, it is estimated that half a million blogs existed. Language used by bloggers could reflect the unique pattern of discourse within the blogosphere where the combination of both monologue and dialogue in a space-bound, digital environment is observed. Some studies show that a strong sense of identity is seen within the literacy practices in blogosphere where bloggers tend to use code-switching and code mixing in their blogs. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the dynamics of English language use among top-ranked Malaysian bloggers from the perception of final-year TESL (Teaching English as Second Language) undergraduate students. The study reveals that there are various linguistic features found in blogs and also in the interaction with one another in meaning-making process.  Several implications are discussed.KEY WORD: Blogs, communication, virtual identity, language use, code mixing, and TESL students in Malaysia.IKHTISAR: Blog merupakan mod komunikasi baru yang memberi impak kepada domain seperti komuniti maya, perkongsian maklumat, implikasi pedagogi, dan pembentukan jatidiri maya. Abstract

Abstract: The technical and vocational education in Malaysia and Indonesia has its own history. Abstract

The purpose of this case study was to evaluate the Project-Based Learning that was implemented at the Mechanical Engineering Department in a polytechnic in Malaysia. One kind of constructivism, Project-Based Learning was introduced into the Malaysian polytechnics curriculum regarding to result creative and innovative human resources. This study involved a random sample of 118 students and 43 supervisors in the Mechanical Engineering Department. The study found that both the students and supervisors agreed that Project-Based Learning approach is appropriate for the final project course J5012. In addition, both groups of respondents believed that the supervisors possesed adequate technical knowledge and implemented supervisory duties effectively. Nevertheless, students perceived the module content was hard to understand. The students barely agreed that the machines and equipments at the polytechnic were appropriate for the project. Positively, Polytechnic Kota Bharu should introduce a formal course of Project-Based Learning to the polytechnic system in Malaysia.
