Abstract

Abstract The research aims to determine the growth pattern of alfalfa in the tropical region, which later can be used as a source of information for the people needed. Research methods used are experimental; the data acquired during the 90 days was showed in a graph and then analyzed using regression analysis with two variables, namely independent variables (cutting age) and dependent variables (the nutritive value, height of plants, and production of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and crude protein (CP)). The growth pattern of alfalfa in the range 20 to 90 days was quadratic, with the equation of y= -0.0092x2 + 1.6113x – 19.257. At that range of time the alfalfa was still in vegetative growth phase. With increasing age of cutting, the alfalfa chemical compositions of DM and OM increased, but the content of CP decreased. While the production of DM, OM, and CP increased with increasing cutting age. Key words: nutrition, growth, alfalfa, tropics

Abstract

This investigation aimed to identify the production and composition of crops as feed, classify the types of integrated farming in different locations, and compare dairy goats based on their morphometric characteristics. The data used were collected from July to November, 2021 in the Malang, Lumajang, and Bangkalan regencies of Indonesia, via a survey and direct observations. Descriptive, multivariate, and variance analyses were adopted using RStudio to analyze the collected data. In Malang and Lumajang, farmers adopted agroforestry, alley cropping, and cover crops as the main types of integrated farming. The integrated farming adopted by the farmers in Malang, Bangkalan, and Lumajang helped to explain the differences in forage crops. Calliandra calothyrsus, Indigofera zollingeriana, and Thitonia diversifolia are non-grasses having high levels of average production. In Lumajang, farmers provided only a few combinations with Calliandra which was the most intensively grown crop. In Malang, six crops were combined for the dairy goat feed. Pennisetum purpureum was the crop most intensely grown to feed the PE (Etawa crossbred). In Bangkalan, Pote-Arosbaya goats were fed a combination of eight crops. Moringa oleifera, Bambusa sp., Artocarpus heterophyllus, and natural grasses were the most popular feed crops. In Malang and Lumajang, the PE Singosari and Senduro goats had a high degree of similarity based on their morphometric characteristics, respectively.

Abstract

Abstract

The growing concern regarding excessive sugar intake and its link to chronic health conditions has driven innovations in functional food development, particularly through the use of natural sugar alternatives. This study aimed to investigate the effects of substituting sugar with inulin-enriched honey powder on physical, sensory, and microstructural characteristics, as well as selected chemical properties (moisture and ash) of prebiotic biscuits. A laboratory experiment with a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications was conducted. Biscuits were formulated with varying ratios of powdered sugar and inulin honey powder: 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. The measurements included diameter, thickness, spread ratio, hardness, color (L*, a*, b*), sensory attributes (color, aroma, taste, hardness, overall acceptance), and microstructure by scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that increasing the proportion of inulin honey powder significantly (P < 0.01) reduced the diameter and thickness but improved the spread ratio. The 50:50 sugar-to-honey powder ratio presented the best combination of physical characteristics and sensory acceptance. Biscuits from this formulation had a favourable spread ratio, lower hardness, and a homogeneous microstructure. Sensory evaluation indicated that moderate substitution preserved desirable taste and hardness. These findings demonstrate that inulin honey powder can serve as a viable natural sweetener in baked goods while improving textural and structural quality. This approach contributes to the development of healthier food options and supports future applications of natural prebiotic sweeteners in functional bakery products.
