Abstract

Jorong Parit Dalam Nagari Taeh Baruah, Payakumbuh District, Limapuluh Kota Regency is one of the villages that has various problems such as drought, high number of idle lands and remote access. The main crop planted during the rainy season is lowland rice, but most of the land becomes idle land during the dry season. In terms of fertilization, farmers in this location still use artificial fertilizers (chemical fertilizers) and in terms of pest and disease control they still use chemical pesticides. The solutions that can be offered are planting chili plants which are more resistant to drought, processing agricultural waste into compost as an alternative to reduce dependence on the use of chemical fertilizers, use of Trichoderma and vegetable pesticides as agents for controlling pests and diseases, and processing chili production to increase value. selling, competitiveness and community income. The purpose of this farmer group empowerment activity is to increase public knowledge about the use of Trichoderma which can increase the growth of chili plants, and can also be used as a biological agent to control pests and diseases that often attack chili plants when cultivated. The method used in this activity is socialization and counseling, structured training and direct practice in the field of Trichoderma's influence on the growth and production of chili plants. The results obtained from this activity are that the community can recognize that there are alternative controls that are more environmentally friendly than the use of synthetic pesticides. The public can also gain new understanding regarding the increased growth and yield of chili plants by utilizing the Trichoderma biological agent. So that in the end it can reduce dependence on synthetic pesticides obtained from outside. Therefore, the environment and the balance of the ecosystem in the Nagari Taeh Baruh area are maintained. The conclusion of this activity is that plant growth applied using Trichoderma spp is higher than plants that are not treated with Trichoderma spp (control). The use of Trichoderma spp is highly recommended because besides being easy to obtain, it also provides positive values for plant growth and is good for environmental technology around cultivated plants.

Abstract

Syahrawati M, Nelly N, Hamid H, Efendi S. 2018. Short Communication: Abundance of corn planthopper (Stenocranus pacificus Kirkaldy 1907, Hemiptera: Delphacidae) on five new corn varieties. Biodiversitas 19: 1029-1034. Both local and hybrid corn varieties have been attacked by Stenocranus pacificus or corn planthopper frequently grown in West Sumatra. So, the basic aim of the study is to know about the abundance of S. pacificus on major five corn varieties that will be intermittently released viz., N35, N37, NT10, NT104, and NT105. The study was conducted around palm plantation in Dharmasraya District using Randomized Block Design in 5 replications. The observations were made at weekly intervals throughout the season after planting up to 8 weeks. Number of S. pacificus were collected from 16 hills by using simple aspirator, selected randomly from each unit. The measurement of leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter and trichome length were also performed to confirm the physical effect of S. pacificus preferences. LSD test at 5% level of significance was done to determine the influence of different varieties on insect population. The S. pacificus preferably effect to NT10 variety as compared to other varieties from the early growth of corn, but the S. pacificus abundance was higher at the generative phase than the vegetative. There was a very rapid increase in its population from week to week. Physical factors of the plant, as like as trichome, affected the insect abundance.

Abstract

Abstract. Nelly N, Syahrawati MY, Hamid H, Habazar T, Gusnia DN. 2019. Diversity and characterization of entomopathogenic fungi from rhizosphere of maize plants as potential biological control agents. Biodiversitas 20: 1435-1441. The diversity and characters of entomopathogenic fungi in soil are influenced by cultivation techniques. This study aims at determining the characters and pathogenicity of entomopathogenic fungi in maize plant. Materials were extracted from maize plant rhizosphere at different planting system (monoculture, polyculture, and monoculture of corn on formerly oil palm plantation or replanting) in Nagari Koto Baru, Luhak Nan Duo Subdistrict, West Pasaman District, and West Sumatra Province. Insect bait and series dilution were used to carry out the isolation, while Tenebrio molitor larvae were used for the pathogenicity test. Parameters observed include macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, and pathogenicity of entomopathogenic fungi. The result shows that there are three types of entomopathogenic fungi with various features. After identification, it was known that Aspergillus and Metarizium were obtained from mono, polyculture and by replanting crops, while Beauveria was found from the rhizosphere of corn grown in polyculture with pathogenicity identified as one of the high causes of death to larvae T. molitor with LT50 ranging from 48.03-48.48 hours. Key words: Characterisation, diversity, entomopathogenic fungi, rhizosphere

Abstract

Abstract. Nelly N, Khairul U, Putri AY, Hamid H, Syahrawati MY. 2020. Isolation and selection of maize plants rhizobacteria with the potential of entomopathogens against Spodoptera litura F (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Biodiversitas 21: 753-758.  Spodoptera litura is a polyphagous pest that can be controlled with entomopathogen. Furthermore, Rhizobacteria derived from the rhizosphere of corn plants are expected to control this pest. This research, therefore, was conducted to obtain the entomopathogenic rhizobacteria to control S. litura derived from the rhizosphere of corn plants. Data sampling was carried out at corn plantations in West Pasaman Regency, while Isolation, selection, and testing of S. litura were conducted at the Biological Control Laboratory of the Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University. The method uses serial glowing techniques cultured on Nutrient Agar (NA) media, with the selected isolates tested for their ability as an entomopathogen against S. litura. The feed dip method given to S. litura larvae was used to test for rhizobacteria virulence determination with entomopathogen, used to observe the larvae mortality rate, percentage of pupae, and adult formed. Furthermore, observation of morphological and physiological characters was conducted on entomopathogenic rhizobacteria, with hypersensitive testing conducted on Mirabilis jalapa plants. The results of rhizobacterial isolation from corn rhizosphere obtained 12 entomopathogenic isolates. Deadly larvae of S. litura 51-91.11%, 0.00-8.89% pupae, and 0.00- 6.67% adult were formed. The gram test results obtained approximately 8;4 positive (+) and four negative isolates (-), respectively. Hypersensitivity test results found that one of 12 isolates caused necrotic reactions in Mirabilis jalapa. Therefore, a total of 11 rhizobacteria isolates are entomopathogenic and safe to be used as S. litura biological control agents.

Abstract

Abstract. Rosalia S, Yonariza, Syahrawati M. 2022. Effect of farmer's behavior in cocoa management on insect diversity in Salayo Cocoa Plantation, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 5064-5073. The behavior of farmers in cocoa cultivation will affect the cocoa (Theobroma cacao) plantation environment and all living things in it, including insects. Disruption of insect diversity will also affect the ecosystem services insects provide, especially those related to improving the quality and quantity of agricultural products, especially cocoa. This study aimed to determine and analyze the diversity of insects in cocoa plantations and the role of insects in the ecosystem. This research was carried out at the Salayo Cocoa Plantation, a small-scale farmers' cocoa plantation in Nagari Salayo, Kubung District, Solok Regency, and the Bioecology Laboratory, Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University, from July to October 2021. Insect collection was carried out using pitfall traps, yellow sticky traps, light traps, and spraying with insecticides. Insect sampling was carried out three times. The results showed that in cocoa plantations in Nagari Salayo, Kubung District, Solok Regency, insects from 12 orders, 31 families, and 58 species with a total number of 750 individuals were found, and insect diversity was in the range of 1-3322. Based on their role, the collected insects can be divided into pests, decomposers, pollinators, predators, parasitoids, and neutral insects. The richness and abundance of herbivores were lower than carnivores (predators and parasitoids). The predators with the highest number were Formicidae (Hymenoptera). Good farmer behavior in managing the cocoa plantation can maintain insect diversity and the sustainability of ecosystem services provided by insects.

Abstract

Abstract. Trizelia, Rahma H, Syahrawati M. 2023. Diversity of endophytic fungi of rice plants in Padang City, Indonesia, entomopathogenic to brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens). Biodiversitas 24: 2384-2392. Various endophytic fungi can live in plant tissues for all or part of their life cycle without causing damage or disease in their host. Several genera of endophytic fungi have been reported to be entomopathogenic and can be used to control insect pests. This study aimed to determine the diversity of endophytic fungi from rice stems that were entomopathogenic against Nilaparvata lugens (Stål, 1854) or Brown Planthopper (BPH). Endophytic fungi were isolated from rice stems of IR42 and Cisokan varieties grown in Padang City, West Sumatra Indonesia. Isolated fungi were first evaluated for their pathogenicity against Tenebrio molitor larvae. Subsequently high pathogenicity showed isolates were tested on nymphs and adults of BPH. The results showed that the entomopathogenic fungi isolated from IR 42 and Cisokan were the members of genus Aspergillus, Trichoderma, and Beauveria. The entomopathogenic fungi from IR 42 were more diverse than Cisokan, and Beauveria sp. was the most common isolate and had a better ability to kill the BPH. The highest mortality of BPH was found in PIR 1.3 isolate, but the mortality was still relatively low (53.33% nymphs and 34.99% adults). Further study is needed to increase the effectiveness of these endophytic fungi against BPH directly or indirectly by inducing resistance.

Abstract

Abstract. Liswandi A, Syahrawati M, Hamid H, Arneti, Rinaldi J. 2023. Ability of commercial Beauveria bassiana to suppress the brown planthopper attack by inducing resistance into different rice variety. Biodiversitas 24: 6704-6710. Beauveria bassiana (Bb) is one of the biological agents for controlling the Brown Planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, which is generally applied directly to BPH. Nowadays, it is also used to induce resistance in rice plants; this ability has never been tested on commercial B. bassiana. The research aimed to study the effect of different rice varieties and induced resistance of commercial Bb on BPH and rice plants. The study used a Factorial Completely Randomized Design (FCRD). The first factor was the difference in rice varieties (IR 42, Cisokan, Batang Piaman), and the second factor was the soaking of the seeds and roots by commercial Bb (with commercial Bb, without commercial Bb). The results showed no interaction between rice variety and commercial Bb against BPH and rice plants. Commercial Bb reduced the attack intensity of BPH (13.31%); meanwhile, different rice varieties influenced BPH mortality, colonization, and plant growth. The Cisokan variety was better at suppressing the BPH population (45%) and suitable for colonization by commercial Bb. The IR 42 variety was more responsive than other varieties in accepting the presence of commercial Bb (16%).

Abstract

Background: Entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) such as Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium spp. are widely used as biological control agents in integrated pest management (IPM), but their ecological risks to non-target predatory arthropods remain insufficiently understood; specifically, no quantitative synthesis has yet compared these effects across multiple exposure pathways and predator taxa simultaneously. Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to quantify and compare the lethal and sublethal effects of these two EPF species on predatory arthropods and to determine how exposure pathway and predator taxonomic group modulate the magnitude of ecological risk. Methods: Data were extracted from 27 laboratory studies published between 2015 and 2025, yielding 147 observations across more than 25 predator species representing six taxonomic orders (five with sufficient replication for pooled comparison). Effect sizes, expressed as log odds ratios and Hedges' g, were pooled using random-effects models, and mixed-effects moderator analyses compared EPF species, exposure pathway, and predator taxonomic order. Results: Both B. bassiana and Metarhizium spp. significantly increased predator mortality (pooled OR = 13.33) and reduced survival (OR = 7.665), with no significant difference in lethality between species. Developmental time was significantly prolonged and fecundity was significantly reduced, while longevity showed no significant overall effect, albeit based on limited data (k = 6). Exposure pathway was the strongest significant moderator of fecundity risk: direct application caused significantly greater fecundity reduction than soil or prey-mediated exposure, and Coleoptera showed the greatest susceptibility to developmental disruption among taxonomic orders based on the available data, with Coleoptera also being by far the most represented order (n = 67 observations). Conclusions: Exposure pathway, rather than EPF species identity, was the primary determinant of laboratory-observed lethal and sublethal effects on predatory arthropods, indicating that application method warrants priority attention in ecological risk assessment and in the design of EPF-based biological control strategies that seek to conserve predatory arthropods as key natural enemies, although field validation of these laboratory-based, worst-case-scenario estimates is still needed.
