Abstract

Soil fertility is a key factor influencing maize productivity, particularly in intensive agricultural areas. This study aimed to evaluate the chemical and physical soil properties of maize (Zea mays L.) fields in Pulubala District, Gorontalo Regency, Indonesia. The study was conducted from April to May 2025 in three maize-growing villages, namely Mulyonegoro, Puncak, and Molalahu. Soil samples were collected using a diagonal sampling technique at a depth of 0–30 cm. Soil physical properties analyzed included texture, bulk density, and water content, while chemical properties comprised soil pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus (Olsen P₂O₅), exchangeable potassium, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation. The results indicated that soils in the study area were generally slightly acidic, with low organic carbon, low available phosphorus, and low base saturation, despite moderate nitrogen and high potassium availability. These conditions indicate that low organic matter content and phosphorus deficiency are the main limiting factors for soil fertility in the maize fields of Pulubala District. Integrated soil management practices, including organic matter application and balanced fertilization, are required to improve soil quality and support sustainable maize production.

Abstract

Acid soils with low pH are a major constraint for tomato cultivation in Indonesia, including in Kwandang District, North Gorontalo Regency, which has a soil pH of 5.23. This study aimed to determine the growth response of tomato plants (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) to liming and fertilizer types on acid soils. The research was conducted in Molingkapoto Village, Kwandang District, North Gorontalo Regency, for four months (November 2025–February 2026). A Factorial Randomized Block Design was employed with two factors: agricultural lime dosage (K0 = no lime; K1 = 1,000 g/plot; K2 = 1,300 g/plot) and fertilizer type and dosage (P0 = no fertilizer; P1 = organic fertilizer 7,000 g/plot; P2 = NPK fertilizer 8 g/plant), replicated three times for 27 experimental units. Parameters observed included plant height, leaf number, leaf color score, and leaf area index at 14, 30, and 44 days after planting (DAP). Results showed that liming at 1,300 g/plot (K2) and NPK fertilizer at 8 g/plant (P2), both independently and in combination (K2P2), produced the best growth across all parameters at 44 DAP: plant height, leaf number, leaf color score, and leaf area index. Liming improved soil pH and increased macro and micronutrient availability, while NPK fertilizer provided essential nutrients rapidly available to the plant.

Abstract

Abstract Phosphorus (P) availability in soil is frequently a limiting factor for waxy maize growth due to high phosphorus fixation capacity, particularly in acidic soils. The application of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and organic fertilizers represents an environmentally sound approach to enhancing P bioavailability and overall soil fertility. This study evaluated the effects of PSB and different types of organic fertilizer on the vegetative growth of waxy maize, as well as their interaction. The study employed a 4 × 3 factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications. The first factor was PSB dose, consisting of four levels: 0, 10, 20, and 30 mL ha⁻¹, and the second factor was organic fertilizer type, consisting of three levels: no fertilizer, 15 t ha⁻¹ of cattle manure, and 15 t ha⁻¹ of chicken manure. The observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, and leaf area. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and the 5% DMRT test. The results showed that the application of Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) had no significant effect on all vegetative growth parameters. Conversely, the type of organic fertilizer had a significant effect, with chicken manure yielding the best growth in terms of plant height, number of leaves, and leaf area. There was no significant interaction between the phosphate-solubilizing bacteria dose and the type of organic fertilizer. Keywords: waxy maize, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, organic fertilizer, vegetative growth

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of leaf extract (Ipomoea pes-caprae) as a plant pesticide in controlling (Spodoptera frugiperda), focusing on the effect of concentration and method of application on mortality, and feeding activity. This study was conducted to fill the limitations of previous studies that highlighted more pharmacological aspects (Ipomoea pes-caprae) and have not studied its potential as an insecticide against agricultural pests. The method used was a laboratory experiment with a factorial Complete Random Design (RAL), consisting of four concentration levels (0, 1000, 3000, and 5000 mg/L) and three application methods (feed dip, larval spray, and combination), with three replicas. The results showed that larval mortality was influenced by the interaction between concentration and application method, where at small and moderate concentrations the oral method was more effective, while at high concentrations the contact method was more dominant. In addition, the extract is able to significantly suppress eating activities. These findings confirm that the effectiveness of plant-based pesticides is contextual and depends on the entry pathways of the active compounds.

Abstract

Efforts to sustainably improve the resistance, growth and yield of soybean plants can be carried out through the use of elicitors. This study aimed to determine the effect of various types of elicitors and their interactions on two soybean varieties, as well as to identify the most elicitor type for enhancing the growth and yield of soybean plants. The experiment was conducted from May to July 2025 in Iloheluma Village, Tilongkabila Subdistrict, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province. A Split Plot Design was employed with elicitor types as the main plots : E0 (no elicitor), E1 (Siam weed, Billygoat-weed, Stonebreaker, Indian copperleaf, and White leadtree), and E2 (Devil’s horsewhip leaf, Gliricidia leaf, Green chiretta, Guava leaf, and Senna tora). Soybean varieties Dega 1 (V1) and Grobogan (V2) were assigned as subplots. The results showed that elicitor types had a significant effect on the growth and yield of soybean plants, as indicated by plant height at 28 days after planting (DAP), number of leaves, 100-seed weight, and dry shelled yield per plot. In contrast, varietal treatments had no significant effect on soybean growth and yield. Moreover, there was no ineraction between elicitor types and soybean varieties across all observed parameters. The best elicitor 2 for supporting soybean growth and yield was Elicitor 2, consisting of Devil’s horsewhip leaf, Gliricidia leaf, Green chiretta, Guava leaf, and Senna tora.

Abstract

One of the important food crops in Gorontalo is corn (Zea mays L. var. ceratina), and root health is very important in determining its growth and productivity. This study aims to determine the root shoot-root ratio and root infection of waxy corn plants given arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi as biostimulants. This study was conducted from July to December 2025 using a completely randomized block design (RBD) with four different doses mycorrhizal arbuscular: 0, 10, 20, 30 g /polybag, which were replicated three times and observed periodically over 42 days after planting (DAP). The variables observed were root shoot-root ratio and root infection of plants at 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days after planting. The results showed that the application of mycorrhizae with different doses resulted in a root shoot ratio that increased in line with the increasing age of the plant. In contrast, it was interesting to find that in plant root infections, mycorrhizal application appeared to increase until the plants were 28 days after planting, after which it declined. This finding suggests that arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation given to plants at different doses can impact root health, as indicated by the ratio of root decay to root infection. The symbiosis between mycorrhizae and plants is crucial for the growth of waxy corn.

Abstract

Waxy corn (Zea mays var. ceratina) is an important food crop whose growth and productivity are strongly influenced by nutrient availability and soil microbial activity. The use of Actinomycetes as a biological biostimulant has gained attention due to its potential to enhance plant growth in an environmentally sustainable manner. This study aimed to evaluate the response of waxy corn growth rate to different doses of Actinomycetes inoculation. The experiment was conducted from July to December 2025 using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of three treatments: without Actinomycetes application (PA0), 5 g Actinomycetes (PA1), and 10 g Actinomycetes (PA2), with three replications for each treatment. Plant growth observations were performed at 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days after planting (DAP). Growth rate was determined based on the increase in plant dry biomass over each observation interval. The results showed that Actinomycetes inoculation affected the growth rate of waxy corn. The PA2 treatment consistently exhibited higher and more stable growth rates compared with PA0 and PA1 throughout the observation period. The enhanced growth performance was likely associated with the role of Actinomycetes in improving nutrient availability and stimulating vegetative development. In conclusion, the application of 10 g Actinomycetes demonstrated the greatest potential to increase the growth rate of waxy corn and may serve as an effective biological biostimulant for sustainable crop production.
