Abstract

The problem in this study relates to the study of translation, specifically on translation techniques which govern the way directive speech act is translated from English into Indonesian. This study aims to find out translation techniques of directive speech acts using Yule's theory (1996) and Molina and Albir's theory. The data sources of this study are WALL-E film and its Indonesian subtitles on a streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar. Based on the results, there are 81 data of directive speech, divided into Command with 20 data, Order with 41 data, Request with 11 data, and Suggestion with 9 data. The researcher also found 14 translation techniques which are used when translating English directive speech act into Indonesian from the sources of data, namely: amplification, borrowing, calque, compensation, discursive creation, established equivalent, generalization, linguistic amplification, linguistic compression, literal translation, modulation, particularization, reduction, and transposition. There were 37 data using single technique, 31 data using couplet technique, 11 data using triplet technique, and 2 data using quartet technique.

Abstract

There are many tourism guidebooks spread all around Indonesia yet they are not of good quality. This study embarks on the idea that the quality of tourism guidebook is still far from perfect. This study intends to explore the type of error taxonomies found in the tourism guidebooks by employing qualitative method. Six tourism guidebooks were collected and used as data and the theory being used is proposed by Dastjerdi and Abdolmaleki (2012). They modify the classification of errors in translation based on Keshavarz and ATA and proposed the name of error taxonomy. This error taxonomy has four major error types of syntactic error with three error patterns, semantic errors with 12 error patterns, pragmatic errors with 4 patterns, and translation-specific errors with 4 patterns. The selected guidebooks are then analyzed sentence by sentence using the error taxonomy in order to find out the error in the translation. Total data gathered are 519 with 292 are recognized as errors. These are then broken down into four types of errors: semantic errors having 149 errors (51%), syntactic errors having 133 errors (45%), and the least occurrence of errors is in the type of both pragmatic and translation-specific errors with only 5 errors (2%). This result will provide recommendation for the tourism boards or the local government who published these guidebooks to take prompt action to review and revise their edition of tourism guidebooks.

Abstract

Movie posters are not only used as a tool of artistic purposes, but also are essential elements within the extensive realm of film marketing, serving as visual representatives that are intended to charm and attract potential viewers. This research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how linguistic and multimodal elements intersect in the analysis of movie posters used in as a film promotion tool. This study uses Kress and van Leeuwen multimodal discourse analysis theory to discuss the findings carried out on The Marvels movie poster, which aim to reveal how verbal and visual signs work together as social sign to interpret the representational, interactional, and compositional meanings. The research uses Teun A. van Dijk multimodal dimension, which includes analyse a thorough review of visual components, design decisions, and symbolic depictions to understand their intended effect on prospective audiences. Moreover, this investigation unveiled the subtle ways in which societal, cultural, and cognitive factors impact interpretation. Delving into the social cognitive dimension within these posters provides insights into how audience reception is shaped by cultural contexts and cognitive mechanisms. The study stands as a testament to the interdisciplinary nature of research in linguistics and semiotics within the realm of visual communication.

Abstract

The topic of this research is subtitling strategies of imperative sentence in The Divergent Series: Insurgent movie. The aims of this research is to find out the kind of subtitling strategies in the movie. This research used a descriptive method. The source data for this research are English subtitle and Indonesian subtitle from The Divergent Series: Insurgent movie. The data in this research is the dialogue in the movie. The researcher used the theory from Gottlieb (1992). The result of this research there are 8 kind of subtitling strategies, there are 73 data classified as Paraphrase, 32 data classified as Transfer, 13 data classified as Expansion, 21 data classified as Imitation, 4 data classified as Condensation, 5 data classified as Decimation, 12 data classified as Deletion, and 5 data classified as Resignation. The most subtitling strategy that used in this research is Paraphrase strategy because there are 73 data classified as Paraphrase strategy.
