Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of cultural values found in English learning materials for 11th-grade high school students and to analyze how these values are represented from the perspectives of students and teachers. Using a qualitative approach and Émile Durkheim’s theory of social facts, the study categorizes cultural values into four dimensions: externality, coerciveness, generality, and independence. The findings reveal that these values are embedded in narrative texts such as folktales and moral stories, serving both as language learning tools and character-building media. Externality and coerciveness are reflected in obedience to authority and social norms, while generality and independence appear in collective values and critical thinking. Students' reading skills also play a significant role in understanding and internalizing these values. Integrating cultural values into English instruction supports the development of literacy, character, and students’ cultural awareness.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the correlation between students' learning styles and their English achievement. The research focuses on four learning styles based on the VARK model: Visual, Auditory, Read or Write, and Kinesthetic. A quantitative method with a correlational approach was used, involving eleventh-grade students from one class at a senior high school. The instruments used in this study were a learning style questionnaire consisting of 28 items (7 items for each learning style) and an English achievement test in the form of 30 multiple-choice questions. The data were analyzed using Spearman Rank Correlation to determine the relationship between each learning style and students’ English achievement. The results showed that there was no significant correlation between the four learning styles and students’ English achievement. These findings indicate that learning style preferences may not be strong predictors of students' academic performance in English. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers implement more varied and inclusive teaching strategies that can accommodate different learning preferences and consider other factors that may influence student achievement

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the “English Fairy Tales” YouTube channel on students’ listening comprehension abilities in an EFL context. Listening comprehension is a crucial yet often neglected skill among Indonesian EFL learners, who struggle due to limited exposure to authentic spoken English and lack of engaging instructional materials. To address this issue, the study examines whether digital storytelling specifically, fairy tales on YouTube can enhance students' listening skills. The study used a quantitative, quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. A total of 70 tenth-grade students from SMA Negeri 1 Sukodadi were divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected using multiple-choice listening tests and analyzed using t-tests and effect size measurement. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s post-test scores (from 51.57 to 67.14), while the control group’s scores declined (from 48.43 to 44.00). Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between groups (p < 0.001). These results suggest that storytelling videos from the “English Fairy Tales” YouTube channel effectively improve students’ listening comprehension. The study concludes that integrating digital storytelling into EFL instruction offers a valuable, engaging approach to overcoming traditional listening barriers and should be considered in modern language classrooms.
