Abstract

The study aimed at exploring students’ perception of implementing problem-based learning with blended learning in EFL academic reading. Quantitative and qualitative data were gained by applying a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The study occurred at the English Education Program at Muhammadiyah University of Mataram. The respondents involved in this research were thirty-four English foreign language (EFL) students who are joining an academic reading course. The result showed that students have positive perceptions of the use of problem-based learning with blended learning in teaching EFL academic reading. At the same time, the respondents found barriers preventing them from utilizing problem-based learning in teaching EFL academic reading such as requiring sufficient time to complete a topic or find out the solution to a problem, needing additional fees to buy internet quota, and needing prior knowledge in applying problem-based learning. Finally, the finding gained from two types of instruments recommended that PBL with blended learning can be applied in EFL academic reading.

Abstract

This study investigates the factors affecting grammar mastery among English language students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Mataram using a descriptive qualitative approach. It involves 25 first-semester students who participated in grammar tests, with data analysed through the Miles and Huberman model: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings highlight several significant challenges. First, the dominance of theoretical teaching methods without adequate practical application makes grammar learning difficult for students. Students often memorize rules but struggle to apply them in real contexts. Second, the lack of opportunities to practice speaking English limits students’ ability to internalize grammatical structures, reducing their confidence and fluency. Although English exposure through media is frequent, it is generally passive such as listening to songs or watching movies without interactive engagement. Third, students face challenges in understanding English vocabulary, particularly idiomatic expressions and cultural references, which are often absent from local linguistic environments. These unfamiliar elements create confusion and hinder comprehension. The study suggests that grammar instruction should be more communicative, include cultural integration, and provide active learning opportunities to enhance grammar mastery. These findings offer valuable insights for improving English grammar teaching strategies in similar EFL contexts.

Abstract

Background: Culinary MSMEs face a structural paradox in developing regions where rapid growth is met with asymmetric and fluctuating government infrastructure support. Previous studies often overlook the holistic integration of psychological and structural factors in driving innovation and business resilience.   Purpose: This study aims to empirically examine the mediating role of innovation capability in the relationship between infrastructure support, capacity building, and self-efficacy on the sustainable performance of culinary MSMEs.   Methods: An explanatory quantitative approach was employed using a saturated sample of 180 culinary MSMEs receiving government interventions in Dompu Regency. Primary data were collected via structured questionnaires and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) through SmartPLS.   Results: The analysis reveals that capacity building and self-efficacy significantly enhance sustainable performance through the mediation of innovation capability. However, infrastructure support directly impacts sustainable performance but fails to trigger innovation capability, thus negating its mediation effect. Furthermore, self-efficacy emerged as the most dominant driver of innovation capability among MSME owners.   Conclusion: Innovation capability is a crucial mediator that translates managerial capacity and psychological resilience into sustainable performance. Meanwhile, physical infrastructure serves merely as a passive structural resource that ensures direct operational stability without stimulating adaptive innovation.

Abstract

Writing engagement has become a central aspect of EFL writing instruction, particularly in technology-enhanced learning. Although previous studies have examined social media platforms and automated writing evaluation tools separately, little is known about how these technologies can be integrated to enhance both writing engagement and writing quality. TikTok was selected because its short instructional videos provide authentic language input and stimulate students’ ideas, whereas Grammarly offers automated feedback that supports revision and improves writing accuracy. This study investigated an integrated TikTok–Grammarly workflow in relation to writing engagement and paragraph-level writing quality among Indonesian EFL university students. Students accessed instructional TikTok videos to generate ideas and receive language input, drafted their paragraphs, used Grammarly to obtain automated feedback, revised their work, and submitted the final version for classroom discussion and reflection. A descriptive qualitative case study was conducted with 40 undergraduate students enrolled in an English writing course, with seven participants selected for in-depth interviews. Data were collected through writing artifacts, revision notes, interviews, and classroom observations. The findings showed that the integrated workflow enhanced behavioral engagement through repeated revision, cognitive engagement through critical evaluation of feedback, and affective engagement by reducing writing anxiety. Students also demonstrated improvements in grammatical accuracy, lexical choice, and referential cohesion, although conjunctive cohesion showed limited progress. These findings indicate that TikTok and Grammarly played complementary roles in fostering writing engagement and improving paragraph-level writing quality in EFL contexts.
